    Isn't the book not only almost a decade old at this point and with the author seemingly having no knowledge of mandarin and as a result no access or use of the vast majority of both CPC and Chinese historiography and internal reports and archives. How can someone go into a book like this trusting it to be both accurate in its proclamations and descriptions and even if it was 8 years ago that it is similarly now after all the huge changes and new cold war molding that has happened in the last 5-6 years. Just by being a pre new cold war book a bunch of geopolitical and economic claims are bound to already dated and have changed by this point. Like for example Chinese going all in in shifting into a high tech onsumption economy as fast as possible, pushing for de-dollarization, Brics expansion, regulatory crackdowns increasing manyfold, 2 new five year plans. China, the cpc and the chinese-american relationship and the changes it forces onto China are far from what they were in let's say 2014

    Matt mentions in his philosophy/religion/science/autobiographical ramble, which was awesome by the way, the cleavage between his/our narrative experience of reality and the things that are happening/we are sensing.
    It reminds me deeply of the zazen practice. Zen sitting has nothing to do with your breathing but is an attempt to dispense with narrative and embrace existence as it is being sensed at the moment. Zazen is almost offensively simple but can be an intense encounter with the falling away of narrative.
    Outside of the religious trappings, I think that's often why people don't like zen, you literally just sit there with your own existence in your body and your mind and reality at that moment and attempt to not run away.
    That whole hedonic pursuit is running away while zen is choosing to specifically practice not running.
    I don't think Zen is the answer to the contemporary sociopolitical-economic vacuum that religion would fit into. Instead, "just sitting" is an action you can take to respond to the awfulness of the narrative experience of life, regardless of the variety of material circumstances that you find yourself in.

  • @Superhrnet
    @Superhrnet 2 роки тому +10

    NGL Matt's spiritual journey threw me like a trebuchet. It feels so personal to his own experience to neuroticism and hypochondria, that it feels like him sharing his own comfort blanket. He had some interesting ideas like a greater consciousness somewhere in quantum mechanics, but then seemed to describe that entity in a somewhat determinist frame, which, to me, contradicts his own desire to see change in material conditions through action.

    • @c.andrew3944
      @c.andrew3944 2 роки тому +4

      Quantum mechanics is still deterministic, just in states we don't understand. The hint is in the name: quanta, that all physical aspects/properties can be quantized into discreet values. We're all just in one big canonical ensemble of microstates, and the uncertainty from the atomic realm stacks to the meter scale. I might know my own position, both physically and psychologically, but you can never really know with certainty your trajectory or momentum. Deterministic doesn't mean predetermined, certainly not in the context of human affairs. The contradictions between cosmology and material reality (more importantly, our ability to act in a coordinated manner to shift reality) you're describing is glancing at the whole rub of being human. Dialectical materialism is the study of that contradiction, and it's application to the human world. Mao's "On Contradiction" is pretty good here. Engles said "Motion itself is a contradiction" decades and decades before Heisenberg talked about the contradiction of momentum and position.

      @@c.andrew3944 You'll have to forgive me since I'm not well read at all, but I do wanna engage with this. I suppose what you say makes senses, if I were to translate it to lay-speak (for the sake of my own comprehension), as we are unable to know the inevitable outcome of the future, and so our effort to carve a path is a part of that inevitable future. I guess my trouble is finding a sensible link between the flawed perception of living consciousness, the validity of our experiences reliant on that perception leading to social concepts like solidarity, being willing to sacrifice most or all that you have based on a valid yet flawed perception, and then "waking up" to a oneness or interconnectedness that is also unknowable after the death of the body. Please point out if I am missing something. Am I perhaps thinking if this flawed perception in a moralistic frame?

    Peasants ate a lot more than starch. You can pretty much eat all of the weeds, if you know which part to pick when, so they were making soup with tons of herbs in it pretty constantly. Most places you were allowed to fish all you wanted. Some places peas were the staple -- thus the rhyme about peas porridge. Anyways, proper red meat WAS expensive and/or reserved for the upper classes. I guess that explains guys getting spit-roasted in peasant rebellions.

    While we are on East Asia, I really would be up for Matt doing a book on Japan. Kinda irrelevant I know, but it seems like it would be interesting. Matt seems to have a little bit of a blindspot to Japan in general (weebs makes that understandable), but it really is a fascinating case study of Capitalism since its rise as the first industrialized Asian country, not to mention being such a cultural liberal foil to second and third world Asia. I dont know, maybe if he played more Nintendo as a kid that might have been a gateway to liking Japanese shit.

    I don’t think given how similar the book you read seems to be that it would be worth reading Li Minqi’s The Rise of China, but I do think you should consider its alternative interpretation of a similar Wallerstein-esque view of China as a capitalist state among many in the capitalist world economy. Essentially, Li Minqi argues that because China is so large that it will monopolize the semi-periphery and thus cause a collapse of the stability of the capitalist world economy - thus opening new possibilities.

      yes, people are dying, blah blah blah...

      The British... the most reptilian country.
      1:35:49
      The US and the Chinese economies are totally interdependent at the level where neither side can independently reorient their economies.
      1:52:13
      Since China cannot quit the US dollar without cutting their own throats they can not build an alternative to the global US capitalist system.
      in order for China to call the shots in a meaningful way right let's take this as a syllogism, they would have to have effective control of the world Reserve currency but in order to do that they would have to get rid of the capital controls in their money market and if they do that that is the death warrant of the Communist Party of China as an independent power repository.

    We’re still just fancy animals. The only thing worth doing is realizing your true nature and not live as an ego/identity. But no one cares… no one wants to do that. Everything in our society is about glorifying the ego, reverse incentives for the public good, and making money the highest moral ideal. It’s all truly horrifying and heartbreaking. And then everyone is fantasizing about how their ego is going to live on after death when it is definitely going to die with your body. I’d like to think we all realize self.. the divine self? When we die, but it’s probably going to suck and your last thought are plarrgggghhh before the lights go out.

    I can't accept this bizarre idiosyncratic take on faith for many reasons. Ultimately, it gives everyone what they want, but not what they think they want, which is the absolute hubris that has led to every other form of liberal faith where you get to do whatever you want plus know that the universe wants you to do exactly that. Further, Matt, I love you man but stick to politics and history. When you bring up stuff like "quantum mechanics" and use that as a breadbox to smuggle in philosophy, it's the exact same trick as everyone who is innocently wrong about their own religion or deliberately scamming someone in the name of religion does, such as Deepak Chopra and all the rest.
    The problem with simulation theory is the same with deism before it, liberal Protestantism before it, and many versions of mysticism and gnosticsism before it - that something must be true just because it can be imagined and be made complex. Brother, the atheists were right all along. If you want the secular humanist side of atheism because of some need not to scare off the centrists and liberal Protestants, sure, you do you. Humanists usually have pretty good instincts. But maybe worry less about what things are called. And less wishcasting a personal philosophy into faith. You get one chance, and the best of us - including you - end up making it better for others, so thanks for that. That's all there is and all there needs to be.
