    I am a beginner linux user (since may I started to study linux like daily 1hour per day). Started with Shawn Power's Comptia Linux + journey then when I searched for xargs explanation I found your canal and it's one of my favourite.
    Amazing simple explanation PLUS very understandable accent AND superb quality of audio which is not that common. Thanks for all of the tutorials you made so far and keep going :)

    I always use the .m3u file example to explain this. M3u are audio playlist files, basically text files that contain a list of paths to a bunch of audio files to play in sequence.
    These paths can be absolute or relative.
    Let's say you put your m3u file at the root of your music folder.
    If you chose absolute paths you can move it anywhere on your system and it will still work, but move any target file and the link is broken.
    If you chose relative paths on the other hand you are free to move your music folder anywhere on your system or even to any other system and your playlist file will still find the audio tracks.

    If you're going to cd into a relative path, make sure it's a distant relative path. Otherwise, things start to get weird really fast.

    When a Linux user forgot to mention the simplest way of getting back to your home directory... *cd*
    Still an informative video, just noticed for going back to your home directory just cd is most likely the best command for it.

      Type. lsblk and press enter to find its mount point and then cd to that directory.

      Sometimes, you run CLI programs, and there is no need to jump from GUI to the command line. But if you are comfortable using GUI, use what you like. And if you run your own server or use some service with Linux there won't be a GUI for you.

    • @andymann6061
      @andymann6061 2 місяці тому +1

      Some distro installations start from console before GUI is installed, or you may recover from a console (rather than Windows blue screen of death), so it's good to have some basic commands in your armoury.

    • @San4itos
      @San4itos 2 місяці тому

      @@ucchuman I guess we may have some minimalistic GUI but don't need to. There are some tools that make life easier such as control panels. But when we use only CLI programs why do we need a GUI?
      Some services are just a command line and you are not allowed to install anything. They often offer a file browser panel but it is sometimes easier to do everything in CLI.

      @@ucchuman I'm sure you're aware of the plethora of hackers trying to break into servers. Some of them are getting very good at it. Every piece of software has vulnerabilities in it whether they have been discovered or not. Guis are notorious for having vulnerabilities. So servers generally don't have any guis at all, not even xorg or Wayland on them. So, being handy with a terminal is a requirement to do anything with most servers.
      Terminals take a while to get use to and learn how to use. Once you get past that and learn a bit about scripting, you begin to see the power of the terminal. Shrug. Most people prefer the mouse and guis which is fine. I used a mouse for years but I find myself using the terminal more and more these days. Not having to reach for the mouse and mess with a pointer is more efficient IMO. However, that is me and my tastes and preferences don't track with what is popular or "normal".
      Regardless what I or anyone else says, you do you. Take care and stay healthy.

      @@juipeltje "Why would they have to use the terminal?"
      They don't *HAVE* to use the terminal, in the same way it's possible to make a loaf of bread with one arm tied behind your back.
      Making a loaf of bread with one arm tied behind your back or using Linux without the terminal just makes your life more difficult - but otherwise do as you see fit.
      And please don't put words into my mouth and then argue against them in any future discussions we may have.
      "Also he didn't even mention the steam deck in the video."
      Why does something have to be mentioned in a video in order for it to be included in a conversation? If we were discussing, say, fatalities due to driving at speed, it would be entirely valid for someone to introduce the notion that "driving under the influence of alcohol" would be a contributory factor - without the word "alcohol" having been mentioned in the original opening of the discussion.
      If you like games and games consoles (and have no objection's to Valve's DRM) then go have fun with your Steam Deck. But Steam Deck has created an entire population of "Linux poseurs" who think they're experts just because they have a games console that runs it and can then crow on social media about how "l33t" they are.
      But the moment they're expected to put in a bit of time and effort to learn Linux properly, they start whining on about "I don't want to use the terminal" - just like you have here.

      @@terrydaktyllus1320 i think you'll find most steam deck owners don't give a shit what os it is running. Not sure where you've been seeing all those people but it sounds made up. Here is a topic that you might want to take a look at: Make a list of a few Linux applications and then test a similar web-based app to see which offer the best experience. I have found many free web-based apps, such as card-games, far better on the web, than native to Linux or FreeBSD.

    It's GNU Linux Ma'm. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
