  • Baking Bread on the open fire, just like the cowboy did! Thought I would wing it and teach myself how to cook like a cowgirl.

Baking in a Dutch oven , you need 3/4 of coals on top and just a 1/4 under the oven. It's fun stuff. I like to stack em. Main course, bread, then dessert on top.

Got my fingers crossed for ya. Hope it turns out delicious! Nothing in the stores can even compare to homemade bread that's made the good ol' fashioned way

Love that you are learning to cook this way. I'm going to assume your dutch oven is footed. have some coals on the lid as well. rotate the pot and lid opposite directions a quarter turn. I do it 2 times about 10-15 minutes apart and my bread is usually done by then. I use charcoal because of where I live I cannot have an open fire. Baking in a DO is a nice skill to have. A local dutch oven cooking group might be a valuable resource to learn from. I'm in the PNW and we have a group on FB.

Wow, you are good on the guess of a footed dutch oven. I was always curious about this old fashioned but amazing type of cooking. I will continue to experiment.

Watch some of cowboy Kent Rollins cooking videos. That guy knows all about cooking on a Dutch oven, he does it every day. He's got some good recipes to. Hope this helps.
