When she came to prominence at age 14 and we saw how good she was - it was almost hard to see how she could get any better. But she has! And her vocal coach recently said she had much more potential! I don’t think there is another singer on the planet that sounds close to her. I learned recently that she arranged this song to her voice. She is so good at doing this. Choosing the minor key just fits her style of singing. I really love this performance! It show how much she has improved her upper and lower registers. Thanks for your reaction.
It's the dissonance. Put aside the yodels, harmonics (overtones and subharmonics), and depth of timbre. Her real trademark is the use of dissonance and how it can unsettle you even if you don't know music theory. Harmonic minor scales, microtones, minor keys. There are few songs she sings where dissonance isn't front and center.

Hearing the song in minor was so different - I had to listen twice. The poignancy is overwhelming. Reflecting on her sad and tragic early life brings gravitas to the song. Is she a contralto - some of the notes are out of that range - but she covers them with ease. What a talent.

Hearing the song in minor was so different - I had to listen twice. The poignancy is overwhelming. Reflecting on her sad and tragic early life brings gravitas to the song. Is she a contralto - some of the notes are out of that range - but she covers them with ease. What a talent.
