    Yes!! This works omg! I was classically trained (clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, and alto were my main instruments) and it was so hard for me to get this awesome fuzzy, yet reedy and powerful, sound for jazz sax. i thought it was because I had the wrong mouthpiece but doing this helps regardless of the mouthpiece you have to a large extent. I wish I had found this video sooner >_> lol
    I also found that if I just loosened up my embouchure and stop pinching so much like I was used to with the clarinet it really helped me to get a much fuller and more natural sax sound.

    I just found your channel earlier today out of frustration because i want to sound good and I've used most of your techniques and I've improved more in these past 4 hours than I had in my whole freshman year

      Waldvogel45 if your having trouble with low notes, just move your reed back a little. It will cause less resistance against your air flow, therefore making your low notes easier to play. But keep in mind they'll be a bit louder so just practice them more often to get a more wider dynamic range.

    This was a revelation. Suddenly I used this technique and my sound changed dramatically - the lower notes are much much richer. Thanks Jeff

    This tip really helped me get my sound get bigger but some notes also started squeaking on the top end of the horn but I guess I'll find my way around that. Also all the other videos I have watched have been great (and the chore charts). Making my life and studies so much easier. Best channel on youtube

    I have a question for anyone who can answer, but let me start with an explanation... I started on flute, so I learned to tongue with the roof of my mouth with a literal "T" sound. It wasn't until 5 years on alto that I learned that actually tonguing the reed was a thing. I have been recently trying to break this habit by catching myself doing it, but I figured, is it REALLY a bad habit? It doesn't inhibit my sound or clarity of attack, but I got to thinking that it may very well be reducing the speed of my tonguing because of obvious reasons(if my tongue is closer to the reed, I can tongue faster). This brings me to my question and what may be a good topic for a future video:
    How do I tongue quickly? Say...back-tonguing or Sonny Stitt tonguing at high tempos when soloing. I understand doodle-tonguing, but what about concise and quick tonguing? Any exercises or explanations are extremely welcome.

      Hi Fritz, I know what you mean. I've tongued like that in the past, as well. I recommend getting in the habit of tongueing directly on the reed rather than the roof of your mouth. In regards to speed, I think the secret is to make sure you are not restricting your air flow in any way. It is very important to support the speed of your tongue with fast and forward facing air. I think the topic warrants a video, so stay tuned. In the meantime, make sure you're blowing forward when trying to tongue fast.

    I think that one of the most important thing to learn on sax is to push out the accents on the right notes to give a good sound. When I play the guitar, piano or sing I can give the right pushy sound on the right notes to sound good but not on the saxophone. When I sing for me it's easy to use the diaphragm but not on saxophone also after years that I play. My licks are too flat bitween the notes. Is there an exercice to improve the "coughy" sound to give great push on the right notes?

    Sax World, herein, the instructor-in-chief is passionately sharing his great wisdom.
    Maybe you have already given it to all - the growls and split tones.
    How does one go about obtaining it/them on, let's say, [high] F# and G - or, on any note (for effects, of course)?
    In advance, thanks Jeff.

    Hi Jeff,
    Great video, my question is how can you increase speed by using this method, to double tongue, you need to use the tip of the tongue up and down to achieve a consistent "double tongue" effect. By using more tongue, the speed can be reduced, is that a fair observation?? Thanks in advance

    • @JeffSchneiderMusic
      @JeffSchneiderMusic  8 років тому +1

      Hi Oscar, Glad you liked the video. I think fast tonguing is actually more easily achieved through less and lighter tongue. I wouldn't worry too much about double tonguing. Make sure you keep your air flowing forward. Airflow is key! Good luck.

    I do not get it right when you're going to play which one and the word you're talking about so you can have the middle part of the language on the palette to have a better sound and better timbre like you said in the video ,? ??? // and another question at the time of exploding, also where I should put my tongue when I explode, as I exploded attacking with the tongue while I'm blowing I put my tongue on the floor, the middle near the palette or I pucho her back , because that changes the sound too ... I'm Brazilian here from Brazil, I'm watching your video with the automatic translation of youtube ai some words go wrong in the translation of the video, then the doubts

    Hi Jeff, I've been debating on something : I used to have a hard time keeping sustained notes for a long times (I was basically short breathed). I also used to "drop my jaw". I then stumbled upon Joe Allard's teachings that helped me compress my air well, partially by not dropping my jaw and by creating air pressure in my mouth. This also helped me play without tension. However, even if I can play loud and long, I feel as if I didn't have as full of a sound. Tonight I spoke with a saxophonist who I greatly admire that told me again about dropping my jaw and playing with the cavity of my mouth/throat and blowing out "hot air". But now I wouldn't want to build a technique that uses unnecessary tension and that makes me short-breathed again. What is your take on this? Thank you loads in advance!!

    I’m sure you have probably been asked this before in the comments to another video (or maybe this one)...... so sorry for the repeat if that’s the case. But what mouthpiece are you playing on. Is it a Drake? It sounds very opened but still really fat with a good lead alto ‘cut’ to it

    I tried to experiment with this techniques today and it is great. Really helpful concept. It just open the sound as you are saying :) But in my opinion these techniques are not good for beginners. For intermediate players are just awesome! Thanks a lot man. P.S. in 2:33 you are sounding just like Kenny Garret :)

    The reed pinches my tounge and it kinda hurts. I start growling after a few notes any tips?

    • @anthonygrader6064
      @anthonygrader6064 7 років тому +2

      I used to have that same problem Christian, but I eventually figured out how to break that habit. It just takes dissecting every single thing that's going on. Any humming of any sort is what adds the growl. Just focusing on a steady air stream is what gives a clear definite tone. Now, the reed pinching is a product of tonguing with the fat part of the tongue. You can eliminate a lot of that pain by trying to make the tongue movement that strikes the reed faster (not harder).
      I hope this helps!

    O.K. right? so it doesn't matter that you don't have a MK 6 like he has - where did this guy get this tongue theory? Never heard that in 40 years of pro playing, why don't you start talking about reeds and mouthpieces?
