Just replaced the clutch on my 86 944. First time I've ever replaced a clutch and I couldn't have done it without your great videos. Car now drives on its own for the first time in 4 years, with new oil and RMS too. Thanks again.
Another great video. So organized. Very detailed. Gives me the confidence to do mine. Starting this much over due project with my son. It’s an automatic non turbo 86 1/2 944
I am going to have to get more organized, watching you lay out tools and notes makes me ashamed of my self. I spend as much time climbing in and out from under the car as I do working on it, lol. Maybe not quite that bad but yeah this would help! Thanks for the video!
I couldn’t agree more! Very detail thank you! How ever what do I’m missing? My car won’t star! I was thinking it was the speed sensors but I marked them when I remove them. The car cranks but won’t start
Great video. I believe I'm going to have to replace my transaxle as soon as I can find a spare. Mine appears to have gone out yesterday, since it started making a really crunchy noise out of nowhere, and the car didn't really want to move, but I didn't have the heart to force it to drive.
edredas. thanks man! I was actually able to find a used one earlier today! I'll be installing it in the morning. Great job with your channel man. Really like how in-depth you instructions are.
Great tutorial serie, I mean i dont own or know someone with a 944 or 924 but I was curious how is the transaxle of that car, still I learn A LOT! SuperB job dude!
@@edredas Figured out the issue. It had been taken out before, but the person that did it I think had not slid it back all the way before removing the transmission and bent it. Was gonna by another before giving a go at having a friend of mine try to fix it. After some effort we got it straight and now it moves like it should.
Can you install the transaxle with the coupler on the torque tube side ? I bought an 88 torque tube ( manual) off ebay and didnt realize that the bolt toward the front was still in there and wasnt loose. It doesnt look like theres enough room because of the spare tire well. The bolt is enough off from the little access hole there no way to get a wrench on it to loosen it and slide it off. Whoever put it on there didnt slide the coupler all the way down the spline. Im thinking maybe if I jack my car up higher I could get an angle on it. Im pretty sure the shaft is all the way into the clutch, you cant turn it with your hand unless you push the clutch in. When I turn engine over the coupler turn... Ive got an 84 944. Im really stuck...
Unfortunately I don't believe so. If I remember correctly the only way to get the trans in is with the coupler on the transmission splines. There isn't' enough room otherwise. I hope that helps!
Yes it does help. I don't have far to go. I mean I can see the bolt head but only about half of it. I'm wondering about either drilling the hole out a little bit, wd 40 and a sledge or loosening the 4 TT bolts on the front ? Hallelujah ! A few taps with a sledge got just what I needed ! Thanks for your help e !
I replaced every piece in the clutch, except the fork and pin. Replaced the torque tube (wouldnt wish that on anyone) did rear main seal and that bearing that sticks in it. Pulled the gearbox did the cup seals and power washed it. Flushed it with transfluid rebuilt the CV Joints with help of my machinist Martin Willis our great grandfathers fought in the Boer War. He machined them for me. I did the rest of the work. (Wouldnt wish that CV job on anyone either). All from viewing mainly your videos. One thing when I started it up my engine cooling fan came on when i turned tbe key on and stayed on while it was running. It was 88 here today but Ive never seen it do that before ?
I’m trying to put a new rear wheel bearing in and I can not get the cv axle out to get the spindle out to pull bearing completely out. Is there a trick to getting it from from the aluminum control arms in my 85.5? Please help
Once you remove the axle, the stub axle will come out from behind. Then you can use a wheel bearing puller to push it out from behind. The Harbor Freight Front wheel bearing kit works great on the later cars. Good luck!
@@edredas so I’ve been talking to the guy over at 944 Fest and sent him some pictures and it looks like mine has a turbo axle. So the cv axle should just drop out after removing the six triple square bolts? Mine is stuck in there and I don’t want to damage it.
Yup! This is procedure for all manual transmission 944 models (924S/944/944S/944S2/951). I tried to note any differences between the models where I could. I hope that helps!
edredas thanks! Btw I have an abs rear axle stub and there is a stuck broken off bolt thanks to a mechanic or the Previous owner. I tried drilling it but after 3 hours I decided I will probably get carpal tunnel before I can use an ez out. How much would a machine shop charge to get it out? What kind of drill bit should I use to drill out the cheesehead bolt?
Get some titanium nitride bits and you'll be able to drill through any bolt quickly! If you're in the US then you can get a whole set at Harbor Freight for about $15. That said, a machine shop probably wouldn't charge more than a few bucks to extract it if its off the car. I hope that helps!

Brilliant channel. Everybody should throw in $10 to buy this guy a lift/hoist.

Awesome! Glad I could help!

Is the tach bouncing when you try to turn it over?
I referred back to one of your episodes and one of my reference sensor it was loose. Car is back on the road! Thank You
you sir, have mastered the art of maintenance. could you do a video on changing motor mounts?
Definitely, I may be doing this for someone this summer and I'll make sure I make a video.

I have the coupler on the transmission input shaft but it wont slide and i really dont want to take the transmission back out
If all the bolts are tightened down on the transmission it should slide into place, but it won't if its the least bit out of alignment.

Do you have to take out the trans to replace the driveshaft coupler
Yes unfortunately the whole transaxle needs to come out to replace the coupler.
Great, Thanx again.
No problem! Thanks for watching!

Yep, it should just come right out after removing the bolts!
@@edredas got it thanks. Just needed some help and it popped out.
Awesome Work. What was your total Time you would say from removal of transaxel, clutch, to re install?
Great video
Somewhere around 12-15 hours, but it would probably be closer to 20 hours for the first-timer.
You made that look too easy;)
Thanks! It gets a little easier every time!
Is the procedure the same for the 89’ 944 S2?

edredas lastly what size tap should I use to retap the thread?
I believe the axle bolts are M8x1.25.
