The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What a collection of talent! This episode was a special "Toast to the Met"; broadcast live from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in celebration of the Metropolitan Opera's 70th anniversary. I hope you will also post Tucker singing "Nessun Dorma" from a 1961 episode, as well as Jan Peerce singing popular songs on the Ed Sullivan show. I love these videos!

Well, I wouldn’t use the term house singers really. They were American, all long-term Met artists, but also legitimate international stars. All of them sang at major opera houses in Europe and South America. Pls realize this was originally a kinescope with the sound quality of AM radio. Merrill had a fluid, deep and expressive baritone, perfect for Italian opera. Stevens could have easily stood toe to toe with any modern mezzo and sung many of them off the stage. Beautiful voice, great technique. This is merely a poor 70 year old remnant of their voices.

Yes, and Tucker was the Greatest American Spinto tenor in his time, and the leading Met. tenor for nearly all of his 30 year career, with over 700 hundred times at the Met. and including 7 opening nights, also he also sang hundreds of performances in other major opera houses, pretty much in most of the major opera houses in this country but also was well respected and sang in many cities both Italy and in South America, he sang in Spain, also in several countries in Asia. In both Vienna and London he received fine reviews in Tosca and over a dozen curtain calls. I saw him at least 20 times in both Chicago, NYC, SF. Calif. and Los Angeles, in some great performances and concerts, also saw both Peters and Merrill many times in both concerts and opera. Stevens was "the great Carmen" of her time and excellent in films, they where all real pros. RIP.

Rise Stevens never did a secondary role like Maddelena, but for just the Quartet on nation al tv she was game.

Oh yes!!! her greatest role for me was Carmen, she was quite a great Mezzo and wonderful in films, besides being very good looking !, sound here of course being opera on "early Live TV" is not what it is today, but it sure is wonderful to see and hear., Peters then a young lady in her early 20's (Born in 1930) was always the excellent Coloratura, with easy solid high notes. Merrill and Tucker two leading singers at the Met. opera for many years, Baritone and Tenor. They are all gone now . . Four of the really great voices from the past. RIP.

You have to be a real sourpuss to make a cheap and uninformed comment like that.
