I was homeschooled and very sheltered. This game came out just when I was hitting puberty so I really connected with this game. This game set my imagination on fire. I would listen to the soundtrack for hours and imagine being transported to other dimensions. These worlds became so real to me. I have fully detailed memories of being in other worlds and having amazing experiences and adventures. I’ve just started writing a book detailing these adventures and I of course listen to the Riven soundtrack every time I sit down to write.
Thank you for making this, it's hard to find discussions on this game, especially ones that go this in-depth! As someone who also has trouble connecting with people, I always found solace in exploring environments, and Riven was instrumental in setting my tastes for adventure games going forward. So glad you felt the same way playing Riven as I did!
Oh, those damn disks. I lost one of them and couldn't finish the game. Even though I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Damn, did the isolation really make me feel uneasy at times. Especially in the temple. I felt like I was being watched or would be discovered and caught by Gehn.
Now, I didn't get into the Myst games until 2010. But once I did, I was in love. And Riven is the peak, for me, and without question one of my favourite games of all time. The combination of puzzles, storytelling, exploration, atmosphere, theme... there's simply nothing quite like it. And the music, oh, it just takes me away to that unforgettable tropical archipelago, both intriguing and deeply ominous. Neither simple nor safe, as the trailer puts it.
This just brought me back to sitting next to my brother and watching him play this, I didn’t realize how much I would remember but I just got sent back immediately. Such a fascinating game!
Absolutely spot-on. I was just thinking the isolation becomes especially apparent when you're doing the easter eggs and for example (Spoiler alert maybe?!) you get to the one with Gehn singing Opera with a goofy ending, and then it suddenly cuts back into the game, hitting you with isolation again like a bucket of cold water.
@@HoodoHoodlumsRevenge .No big deal. I had an notebook so i wrote down everything i heard and see. After that it was just a matter of connecting concepts and solving the puzzles. "It took me a couple of months though"
Great video like usual, dude! Hey, I just had a question completely unrelated to the video for you Hoodz, but what do think of Starfox? Personally it is my favourite Nintendo/video gaming franchise along with Nintendo, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the franchise! Ps: What do think of Fox McCloud? (Also will you make a video on the the games considering that you like to do video game related content now?
I haven’t played any of the Starfox games yet, but I absolutely have to get around to it someday as I’ve heard great things about them. I know of Fox, though! He seems like a real badass 😎
@@HoodoHoodlumsRevenge Ahh you should really try one of the games, they are really good, especially 64 and Assault! Fox is also probably my favourite fictional character of all time (along with Yoshi of course, just my pic and name should give you a hint) Fox is overall a really cool badass, but at the same time feeling very relatable, suffering from trauma of dead parents, insecurities, and other stuff. He's both awesome, but vulnerable, which is why I like him so much!
Go figure, me, a guy who's favorite series is Metroid Prime (mainly the first two), revered for this element, would love this about this masterpiece as well
This was awesome, I like how you’re going into more topics than just creepypastas, good for you! Also, can I make a suggestion for a video? I would like it if you looked at a creepypasta I recently looked at, it has familiar faces, and some parts of other creepypastas you’ve seen before.
@@HoodoHoodlumsRevenge no problem. I've been a longtime viewer ever since you played FNAF. You always seem to cheer me up when it isn't going too well in my life. No other UA-camr does that for me so thanks again. Keep it up man :)
Hey Hoodo, I just want to let you know that I enjoy these new videos quite a lot. I like seeing you just make videos about what you want to make them about, rather than just purely creepypasta stuff (Although I love that content too). Keep at it Hoods, you're awesome
Great game, difficult puzzles. I solved them all without help back then. Took me weeks. Still have the cd box. I recognize your personality, I’m a bit like that too.
Great upload, man! Off-topic question: Have you ever used/messed around with the RPG Maker games, and, if you haven't, can you try it out and (maybe) make a video about it? If you need guidance on how you can use it, you can always check out SRDude's videos on it. Thanks for reading this long comment!
I feel like the Myst games capture perfectly a feeling, best described as "as if someone was here seconds ago and has now vanished" and l love it

Good luck with your book. In a way I feel the still images of the original myst and riven are acruslly MORE immersive than the fully 3D versions
Wonderful retrospective. Really throws light on why I always felt so engrossed by this game. It’s an experience.

Awesome insight. I got transported to my childhood
Awesome video. Riven was my childhood.

Amazing video, had the exact same feelings. One of my favorite games ever made

Very well put! Riven truly is a masterpiece in nearly every aspect.

Love Myst and Exile but Riven in my opinion is the best video game ive ever played. Completed the game without a walk-through!!
Riven and IV are my two favorites, personally. What an accomplishment, to finish Riven without a guide! Fantastic work!

Whenever you upload it puts a smile on my face 🙂
I listen to this video while working out. Great for the gains!🙏💪
HoodoHoodlumsRevenge I like that this wasn't just a game retrospective, but also a philosophical reflection Namaste.

GamingYoshi Fanatic Good stuff, good stuff! 😄
Since this games launch many years ago, the music soundtrack has been my goto music for relaxation. A beautiful game and audio experience.
Yes hoodohoodlumsrevenge uploaded

I just realized the inspiration behind the Minecraft mod "Mysticraft." It makes so much sense now.
These video essays are a nice change of pace from the usual Creepypasta readings

My dad and I finished that game about a week ago, it was pretty fun, I wish there were more puzzle games like Riven.
Zork nemesis is a good one
These regular uploads make me so happy Dennis. The beautiful commentary works really well with the subject and makes it even more frightening.
Thank you very much for the kind words!

Stumbled over this video and Riven was just remade in 3d 😃
An excellent examination of the themes!
Gehn theme sounds haunting. I got killed in 30 minutes.
everyone runs away from you except the girl who brings the book.
I have that five disc game...in my hand right now....
A true classic experience! ;)
I don't mind the change in subjects, I will always support you.
Hoodo should do a creepypasta reading of "12 minutes"
Like if u agree
Cyan should team up with Oculus
Great video, Denis! Would really like to know your thooughts on The Witness, man.
Thank you so much. This video is amazing
Did you know and this is an actual fact unhinged people have a slight power boost in speed, strength, and agility
And this actually have a fact
Will you do more fnaf now that fnaf sister location, fnaf 6 and fnaf VR is out
Wow, a spoiler warning for a game that is over 20 years old. I liked just because of that.
