Did you know we eat the greens for months every year? It's not shown in this video but once we have had our fill we utilize these greens as compost to feed our garden. I would never throw them away.
My grandmother used to quarter potatoes when they sprouted. We planted them in 100 foot rows. We grew all our vegetables for the entire year in our garden. Since she grew up during the depression, she had ways to make all the vegetables last between growing seasons. She only went to the grocery store for sugar, flour, milk, and butter. We raised our own meat also. Middle 80’s, and my grandmother amazed me with her resourcefulness. I’m ashamed I only retained a fraction of what she taught me.
@@Lamati-369 my grandmother grew up before refrigeration or freezers. Root cellars and canning were common practice. Lime was a well used preservative. Apples and other fruits were preserved in layers of newspaper and lime. Corn was also anyone who has eaten hominy can attest to that. We slaughtered hogs so they could hang in the smoke shed all winter.
This was my first year growing potatoes by accident. A yukon gold came up out of the compost, so I transplanted it to a large plastic storage box and ignored it. Once I noticed it sprouting, I threw in 2 small red potatoes. I harvested 7 pounds of red potatoes and 3 pounds yukon gold. I'm thrilled and can't wait till spring to do it again.
You ignored yours and got a massive amount of potatoes. Meanwhile, I bought grow lights, potting soil, potatoe grow bag, ect..... Mine died before ANY potatoes 😂🤷🏼♀️
I started proper gardening this year. Broke up years of compacted soil so I have two 3m by 1m beds. I burnt a lot of fat, lost weight and kinda started looking buff again. I should use my left arm more. But am back in my 32 jeans. 😊😊
I am so excited to see more people gardening and growing their own food. My dream is to own a farm but under these times i don't know if that will ever happen. Even if you live in suburbs and can only use a small patch of the dirt or even use grow bags. We should all learn to grow our own food. I use grow bags. Gardening is life.
That's an amazing harvest!! If you continue to top up your bed with more straw, the potatoes will produce more tubers (they grow vertically along the root.) You can even do it in a cardboard box just to get a bit more height!
@@thecatniplife Russets are indeterminate and grow more vertically as you hill them but Yukons grow laterally (outwards) so a nice flat and wide space is perfect for them, plus they are an early production variety too! I’ve been using grow bags for the russets but the Yukons need more space so I may do like was shown in the video. ☺️
There really aren't many indeterminate home varieties of potatoes. Hilling a determinate variety stresses the plant and is a waste of time and resources

Those plants are suppose to die back before you pick potatoes. They were not done growing. You could of built a box around and kept adding straw, it would of grown huge potatoes. 3 times more! Try it! Good start!

@@fromthegardenchannel I did! Only 1 big one the rest are just a joke. I think since they were left without any leaves most of the summer, the tubers did not get to grow. This was my first time growing them😪💔. Thanks for your reply, enjoy yours 👍
the darker layer was a mixture of homemade compost and mushroom compost. The process of composting waste is what makes it into dirt. It's a bit more to explain that in a comment section
You are soooooo fortunate in harvesting your crops. In the Cayman Islands, we have soooooo much chicken, walk through fence or fly over and dug up our slips out of the ground
Those sweet potatoes leaves make the best greens. The greens are sweet and nutritious. Don't throw it away

You retained some though!
And now add the Yukons back in there for a fall crop! Haha! 👍🏻Dang you did great with that small space! Nice!

This would definitely exhaust the dirt, needs heavy composting because both potatoes and sweet potatoes drew a lot of nutrient

Only indeterminate varieties will do that and it’s hard to find that kind of potato.
