As a Japanese composer, who does cooperate with some game companies sometimes, and does love Nintendo and their music, it's always heartbreaking to hear the cry and the scream from fans outside of Japan. Even though I've been buying their CDs as physical copies of their official soundtracks, it can't be avoided to feel if we had them on UA-cam or Spotify. Siivagunner was one of the channels that provide the way to enjoy the music that we love, but as you know it's gone, due to their claim... One thing I might want to point out is, as I understanding the copyright and related law in Japan as a person who have been working with music closely, we don't have fair-use law, and cultural understanding of it among people either - which is sometimes really problematic and I believe it could be the cause of Nintendo's very old-fashioned stance of distribution of their music, although there must be a lot more complicated circumstances. As you and other a lot people pointing out, I really wish one day they change their stance, and at least respect to fans of their music much more broadly...

Nintendo makes the most iconic and timeless music of any videogame company. The fact that they're not capitalising on that and would rather lose money, is disheartening.

This really highlights my main issue with Nintendo. Whether it be playing old games or listening to soundtracks, Nintendo consistently go after the best ways to do those things, whilst also not providing many official ways to do them.
What’s even weirder is that they sometimes took down music that wasn’t even owned by them, like Mario RPG and Banjo. With the Mario RPG case, people used it as evidence for Geno potentially coming to Smash, but only got in as a Mii Fighter and didn’t even include a song, unlike Sans for example, which makes those takedowns even weirder.
They published both examples you gave, so they might actually own the copyrights to those songs. Of course, it's kinda shaky with Banjo seeing how now Microsoft now owns Rare.
@@kawcco Mario RPG, maybe, but definitely not Banjo since, like you said, Microsoft owns Rare. The original Banjo games even got a Xbox 360 re-release.
Gotta love how copyright law lasts just long enough to make sure the original artist dies, ensuring whatever company they sold the work to will always own it.
It should be the other way around, patents are way more valuable than copyright and they should last way longer. Copyright on the other hand should last 50 years at most

It's insane how Nintendo makes developing timeless masterpieces look easy, but can't seem to do the basics we could expect from even the most mediocre studios
The irony here is that when corporations crack down on copyright and provide little official ways to access their music, they unintentionally create a bigger pirating problem than if they just released them in an easily accessible manner.
Thanks a lot for shining light on this serious issue that greatly impacts the video game cover and remix community. Nintendo's stance on licensing forces constraints on musicians' creativity, which is a pity since there are many unlicenseable favorite Nintendo tunes that people would love to see covered more frequently. And we appreciate the Line Them Up! shoutout! In addition to all the musicians, many game composers (including Donkey Kong/Rare series composers David Wise, Robin Beanland, and Grant Kirkhope) joined us and the team to perform on that project. We were scared about the possibility of Line Them Up! receiving a takedown (and still are scared, to be honest), but we did it anyway out of love for the VGM community and Origami King's soundtrack. The fact that so many composers joined us shows that your point about Nintendo's stance on fan projects doing a disservice to the original composers and their music is spot-on.
as far as i know Nintendo has NEVER taken down a lets play Super Mario Maker (Wii u) was insanely populair on youtube when it was new and Nintendo never took a video down and that was during the partner program age
I remembered that there was a special "25 Anniversary Orchestra" CD included with Skyward Sword. And I just looked how many songs are on there. There are 8 songs. Well, they are played by an orchestra, so that's pretty cool I guess.
The CD was actually pretty good. Fully orchestrated medleys that had fairly decent lengths, along with some amazing singles like Gerudo Valley and Fairy's fountain. Shame that you can't get your hands on any of the other anniversary orchestrations, since they are straight fire (seriously, check them out, they are so good. Especially the 30th anniversary. It includes the milk bar from MM, what more do I need to say? I'll say it anyway, since I can't stop gushing about it. Whenever Nintendo releases phenomenal gaming music, they take a few steps forward, but then proceed to immediately go back a mile, dig underground, and bury themselves in the Earth for god knows how long so that they can drown out the complaints of fans who just want to play 3 seconds worth of Nintendo music Also, this is only semi-related, but EarthBound music (and content sometimes) is also getting harder to listen to because Sony is going nuts with copyright and that's really unfortunate

Here again today, because, well... Uh. Yeah. 3500 unique copyright blocks on Gilvasunner over the course of 3 days. God fucking damn... How could Nintendo be so tone deaf?
It's like this video was handcrafted for me. Nintendo has literally made some of my favourite instrumental music to date, be that Mario Galaxy, the Mario & Luigi Games, Pokemon, the Donkey Kong Country series, etc. yet everytime I wanna listen to it, I have to pray that my playlists havent been purged once again and I have no way to listen to em because the soundtracks are nowhere to be found on streaming or the like. Not enough people talk about this issue or seem to care, so thx a lot for bringing some attention to it!
Not enough commentors talk about this, my god. I basically never check my music playlists, anymore, because I know I'm just gonna be met with a graveyard of deleted masterpieces, and uncontrollable grief and rage will just boil over me.
It confuses the shit out of me why Nintendo still doesn't realize how much they're hurting themselves with their policies. Releasing soundtracks in physical or digital capicities does only good for them, it would be literally free revenue, and yet they do nothing with it. But honestly, knowing Nintendo, it is hilariously possible that they miss out on revenue just to taunt and spite their fans for no reason other than their hypothetical enjoyment
And even if there is some weird bs that would cost them in selling digital soundtracks, so what? They will still make the money back anyway so what are they DOING??!
It's because they want to avoid the chance of legal disputes over ownership and credits. Japanese companies despise Lawsuits with a passion and prefer to avoid chancing any
the other thing that drives me insane is certain IP's will get special concerts, etc. and it is RIDICULOUSLY hard to find their recordings online unless you're a die hard fan that knows that they exist. Splatoon had a whole in person concert series, Pokemon had Symphonic Evolutions (or smthn).

It was beautiful, seeing how thousands of thousands of people like me, were struggling, but even so, were recording their journey and powering through, or even giving motivation to others. Then in 2022, about march to may, the video was removed from Nintendo, after 91 million people had hit the checkpoint, and nearly 1/5 of which recorded their progress. It was heart breaking, and something I’ll never forget.

The same thing that happened in the universal fire. They'd just shrug their shoulders and think of it as the price they (in reality: consumers) have to pay.

I remember about two weeks ago, a Let's Player's (Chuggaaconroy) Earthbound let's play started getting taken down, due to the ost, despite having legit permission from Nintendo to allow it in his content. The issue was because Sony released a cd full of covers over 2 decades ago and their copyright system detected it. I know it's not too relevant to the topic of the video, but I just wanted to point that out.

As someone who adores listening to music from Super Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing, and The Legend of Zelda all day long...I'm very familiar with the feeling of going to my UA-cam playlist and finding 20+ songs suddenly missing. The moment feels like a punch in the gut, realizing the song I wrote essays to is just gone, without any hope of returning. Or the song that cheered me up and made me feel like I could do anything got snatched away. I could provide practically infinite examples, but you get the idea. And I know it's easy to just look up the song and find a few more extensions by other creators, but it's exhausting to look for the same song three times in the same month. I'm tired of having to go out of my way to listen to music. What hurts even more is that the comments of these music videos is full of people coming together and collectively appreciating the music and the game it came from. All these people vowing to dust off their old Wii and play these games again, inspired by the music. Nintendo's all about bringing communities together when it uses Nintendo Switch Online - *hmmmmm* - but strangely cannot tolerate such a harmless group of people enjoying something that makes their games special. Why, Nintendo. Just why. Thank you for reading my essay! Have a virtual cookie!🍪 Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to a Sonic soundtrack now. :)
I think the contrast is really heavy when you compare it to some of the indie games that go the exact opposite route like Touhou or Undertale. Theres no way those two series would be as popular as they are now without the creaters going "Do whatever you want with it" to its music and art.
I just bought seven Touhou Doujin cds from Alstroemeria records, syrufit, esquaria, and adamkadmon. My love for Touhou continues to survive through the music. If I could buy soundtracks for other games it would be great!
Great video!!! I'll echo these same sentiments as a game composer myself and an avid Nintendo music collector.. it really takes some of the magic away from these beautiful first party experiences knowing that projects with 1% of their economic footprint can do a better job of showcasing, highlighting and celebrating the music and art that make their games so special in the first place. They're not beyond drawing inspiration (and sometimes straight up stealing) from their fanbases (for which I arguably have experience with).. so to pull the rug out from under that just shows that they KNOW the value their music and art holds to their legacy, but continually devalue it at the highest level to .. like you're saying, squeeze every last drop of revenue out of their consumers. It's probably something like "if we release this music, that's less incentive for people to buy our games" and they might actually be right.
And by continuing their depressing practices in this way, we're all primed and poised to jump on any full soundtracks they do VERY occasionally release. I can't think of any other reasoning than to secure sales + statistics for investors.
Nintendo sees value in making all their music and art exist exclusively within their game experiences. When you have all these huge name franchises with communities and fanbases .. you don't really need to get the games to be involved + consume and thrive off of those IPs. In their eyes, they probably feel like if they start really releasing soundtracks and going all in the way indie devs do that it's gonna spoil some holy facet of their place in the gaming world. It's gonna get people to put names to the music and art that they love and they lose that almost Apple-esque mystique and 'premium quality' they're defined by. It's (again, from their viewpoint) gonna take those magic gaming experiences and remove the game from them altogether. What's really messed up is that they'll still capitalize off of indie game success to keep that going (indie reps in smash bros, promoting Toby Fox's single track in Pokemon Sword and Shield but never shouting out the rest of Game Freak's composers). They won't fail for this reason, it sucks but it's probably part of what's kept them in their holy place in the gaming world for so long.
Y'all are overthinking it. Nintendo's a creative company, right? Well making their music available may be smart, but that means it isn't creative. The most creative choice for them is to lock away all of their music and retro games and provide minimal ways to ever access them, because no one would expect them to do that. Checkmate, atheists.
Dude, outstanding video. I've wanted to do one in a similar vain for a while now but you handled the topic so well that I could not have said it better myself.

Gee, for a company that hates piracy, they seem to be completely inept on methods to stop it.
Rule 1 of combating Piracy: If you make acquiring a legal version of your product convenient, even if it costs money, a large sum(if not a majority) of fans will buy said product for the convenience alone.
This, that's why it sucks that everyone is coming up with company specific streaming services cause that makes piracy go up. It's literally supply demand at its simplest and Nintendo goes lul what 0head take.

I think the lower track number is fair since all the songs were all new orchestral arrangements
It has an epic boss medley, an amazing short melody medley, and a beautiful medley which includes my favorite tracks from Link's Awakening. If you are reading this, please give it a listen)

Its so dumb that they copyright claim every soundtrack and then don’t release the soundtrack themselves. Like what the actual fuck
