  • A step by step tutorial on how to knit the purl stitch for beginners the continental way
    ►►► VIEW THE FULL BLOG POST nimble-needles...
    After you learned to cast on, to knit the knit stitch and to cast off, you will want to learn another important knitting technique: The purl stitch.
    If you can combine the knit stitch and the purl stitch, you can create a sheer endless number of beautiful patterns - like the stockinette stitch or the rib stitch in all its many variations.
    Purling is just as easy as knitting - the only difference: You have to hold the working yarn in front of your work and not in the back. Also, you have to insert the needles from right to left into the stitch on your left needle. Then you have to wrap the working yarn around your right needle counterclockwise, pull it through and slip the stitch.
    Use your middle finger to guide the stitch through the needle to increase knitting speed, in case you are still struggling a bit with the purl stitch.
    Purl stitches will appear with a little loop around their base. But here is the thing: If you turn your work, purl stitches will appear like knit stitches (and vice versa). And this is the key to a lot of knitting patterns: If you want the right side of your work to only show knit stitches, then you have to purl these knit stitches in every return row. That way, you will only see purl stitches on the backside.
    So, I'm sure you are a knitting beginner or wanted to find out all about the continental purl stitch
    I hope I was able to show you how to knit this second knitting stitch.

    I hope you enjoyed this video. Make sure to ask all your questions and comment once you finished your first row in the purl stitch. Also, and I'm happy to hear your suggestions to improve my videos!

    The craft of knitting is a fascinating invention. It's all based on one stitch: the knit stitch is the purl stitch from the other side (lol). What all knitters are really doing is manipulating that one (knit) stitch to create the most beautiful patterns and designs! We increase them, decrease them, knit them out of order, etc.
    I have been knitting everyday for over 20 years and it never gets old. Thanks Norman ❤

    Turns out I've been working my purl stitches incorrectly. I used your Fingerless Gloves tutorial (working the swatch) to unlearn my bad basics and practise this way - using the middle finger to manipulate the yarn really does help a whole lot!

    Hi Norman, Although I have been knitting for almost 2 years now, I realized I was purling the wrong way. I started recently a lace pattern with different stitches. I wanted to graduate from garter stitch only. It irked me why I was always having difficulty inserting a needle after the purl side for the knit row (especially when doing SSK and Twisted stitches).So went over to your channel to study the anatomy stitches. I used to do knit stitch only in the past, unless ribbing is required. Viola, found out I was wrapping the thread the wrong way when purling. I compared my swatches in the past and made a new one with correct purling. Gosh didńt know the big difference although not recognized by my friends. Now I understand why I had difficulty to insert needle when on knit side. Just wanted to say it´s not too late to learn. Thank you for explaining the Anatomy of stitches too. As a beginner Knitter your Channel is very valuable. I can crochet (Advance level), but knitting is a Challenge for me.

    Hi Norman, thank you so much for your knitting tutorials. I deeply appreciate that you show close ups and you speak clearly, it makes a world of difference for me. The way you hold your yarn and use the middle finger to guide it is going to be more feasible for my needs. Hello from New Mexico🤗

    Hi Norman. Thank you for teaching a great purl technique. What I like best is using the middle finger to wrap the yarn around the working needle. This prevents the wrist from repetative twisting and so is kind to the ligaments and joints helping to prevent carpal tunnel and it produces pretty, even stitches for me. I still do my daily full body stretch, rebalance and strength workouts with a little extra emphasis on fingers and arms, but correct daily movement is important to me. So, thank you.

      it's the same for me!
      some ppl also find the norwegian way to purl a good alternative but for me...well..not really.

    If you all could see me now, my fingers twisted, hand bending backwards trying to figure out how to get the middle finger on the yarn, and for some reason now the tension yarn is falling off the pinky...
    I practiced the knit stitch after watching Norman's knitting for beginners video everyday and I am actually getting comfortable with it. With the purl stitch, suddenly it's madness 😂

      @@NimbleNeedles Update: I understand your index finger method now. I did enjoy your other 10 ways to purl video and tried out others and now I favor just using the index finger. I don't have to mess with any other fingers that way.
      I am learning alternatives to English style knitting because it seems so slow and I wasn't getting faster. I have really enjoyed all your advice. Thanks 😊

    Hi Norman! Thanks so much for your very instructive videos! I would love to use your method to tension the yarn with your middle finger as it seems very natural and effortless but I struggle to do so, as my finger won’t do the job. I wonder if there’s something I’m missing in the position of the left hand 🤔

      @@NimbleNeedles Thanks for the link to this video and these many different methods to purl! I will try them. I use the index finger which is the less awkward method for me, but yours seems so natural. Anyway thanks so much for your videos, I discovered you two days ago and I have spent the weekend watching them and trying to improve my purling. No doubt that continuing will pay. And sorry for my English mistakes, I’m French

    A purl sounds like 'pearl' and thus the name for this stitch. The loop resembles a little pearl.
    How do you purl, when you speed up?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  3 роки тому

      actually...i am not sure that pearl and purl are contacted - i think the etymology is a bit different. Still, it personally made the most sense for me as well ^_°

    I don't know why but when I turned the work, the row of purl stitches looks like a twisted stitch :/ how can I fix this?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  3 роки тому +1

      a) by not twisting the stitches int he first place (you seem to wrap it around the wrong way)
      b) knitting these stitches through the back loop (which is called combination knitting and something you might want to look into)
