    Wow that takes me back about 60 years.....used to fly one out in the alfalfa field back in the day.

      I got into glow freeflight because of hearing so many stories of flying on farms and vacant fields. Such a rich history!

    Used 2 hang out with Marty Thompson and his dad Earl back in the day. Dad was in contention 4 the national team a couple of times. Good memories and amazing father and son modelers.

    Thank you for showing us that it can be done, I love to see the struggle and the perseverance. I've built one but am afraid to fly it. But crashes and hard landings happen so I think I'll build a crash test plane now :) I absolutely love how you showed how to trim one of these!

      Build a Pearl or Satellite from a good kit (or a Sunstreak, hint hint!) and use a mild power setup. Yes you'll have a few bumps and bruises on the plane but those designs are pretty forgiving and you'll enjoy the process.

      With more power I think it would transition better.

    I remember those nylon props that were like razor blades until you took some sand paper to the edges. Also they were way to flexible until you boiled them, just like the combs that were nylon.

      As I recall the Top Flite nylon props were boiled to remove internal molding stresses that could cause blade failure.

      Oh man those nylon props were sharp! I never got bit by a wooden prop but there's still hope :-)

      we also added RIT dye to the water and the nylon would tint up nicely

  • @jimbo2629

    Right rudder and slight left side thrust is usual, together with downthrust. Adjusting it on the field is a pain. Right corkscrew upwards transitioning into a right glide. Flying right left won’t transition without a stall, although you managed it!
    The beauty of electric is you can gradually increase power and motor run. I wouldn’t want to trim I.c. without rdt! But then I’m chicken.
    I used to have a Dave Hipperson Sloworm 1/2A with a Cox TD 0.49. 50 years ago. I mostly fly rubber now. Less attrition.
    How do you manage to always avoid those trees?
    Your videos are great.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  3 роки тому

      I tried right right and let's just say not all the crashes were on camera. I don't think this one can be made to fly right-right. Maybe with a ton of downthrusf it can, but for the life of me I can't figure out that trim setup. NFFFS really hocked this plane by requiring an Early Nos engine for one-design. With a Medallion it would have more than enough speed to transition well.
      As for the trees, if you'll notice from some of the vids, I do a ton of tree retrieval. Having predominantly scrub oaks and pines makes it easier...the prickly stuff is low to the ground, the tall stuff is slippery enough to let the plans go with a little teasing from a pole.

  • @jimbos3421
    @jimbos3421 3 роки тому +1

    Excellent! The engine sounds like it has a crankcase air-leak or would be happier with a different glo plug, running erratic like that.

      There's definitely something wrong with it. Unfortunately those old Atwoods have pretty short useful lives.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  9 місяців тому

      I liked it enough to produce a kit for it, still available at jhaerospace.com
      Plans for almost anything are available at outerzone.co.uk
      And yes I got it out of the tree. Still have the plane.

    Consider flipping the horizontal stabilizer over as it is primarily a downforce device. In a glide or flare, this surface can stall just like the wing. Camber below or at least symmetrical horizontal stab should perform with reduced pitch isolation. Camber on top should be reserved for a canard. Happy flying 👍

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Рік тому

      That doesn't work well on fast freeflight airplanes and it's pretty inefficient. A downforce loading of the stab raises wingloading and reduces pitch damping so the plane oscillates for a longer period before stabilizing. Very, very few full scale aircraft use inverted airfoils on their tails. Most are either symmetrical (neutral loading) or slightly positive similar to what I've got here.

    I think I am working towards all my glow models having RDT. What was happening on your first launches is what scares me about launching so vertical before the plane is adjusted, it goes almost straight up and straight down. Yo Ho looks rugged. I am working on having my power models adjustable with a rudder tab and stab adjustment. I want to get APC propeller have proper fit and be balanced.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  3 роки тому

      I dont think launching straight up would have been any worse. The engine kept cutting out because I had it set up wrong. Oops. ;)
      Rdt is a good idea. Make sure any tabs you have are screw adjusted. The old wire tabs are nothing but trouble in my experience.

    • @joshuawfinn

      I didn't measure but I'd estimate 3 degrees. With a hotter engine it could get away with less.

  • @Zuloff
    @Zuloff 3 роки тому

    Flew lots of 1/2 control line and 1/2 A motor gliders in the 70s - early 80s. Don't know about the Atwood but when I see than start and quit behavior on a Cox engine that was a telltale of a worn out cylinder. Cylinder has compression when cold but is worn and varnished up so loses compression when cylinder heats up. Frustrating as heck because it acts like a mixture/fuel supply issue you keep fighting and fighting with to no avail.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  3 роки тому

      Atwoods are a bit quirky. Unfortunately this is one of the hotter Wasps I've found. As you mentioned, they and Wenmacs have short life expectancies from weak metals that wear quickly, unlike Cox engines which last forever. This Atwood is just picky about fuel flow though.

    • @joshuawfinn

      @@joshuawfinn Are you talking about the little engines designed by Satan especially to ruin little kids' fingers? LOL

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  3 роки тому

      @@stejer211 there's a reason I use an electric starter. ;) That said Cox spring starters, used properly, are one of the better innovations to hit the small engine world. I'm utterly incompetent at using them though.

    • @stejer211
      @stejer211 3 роки тому

      @@joshuawfinn I just got a genius idea: why not cut out the middle man and mount the electric starter directly to the airplane? A smaller motor and smaller battery of course, but wouldn't you think that would give you a few minutes of running time?
      Also: no noise, no oil stains, etc.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  3 роки тому

      @@stejer211 one key item: an equivalent electric setup is heavier than a glow engine of the same weight. As a result, there's a bunch of heavy stuff spread through the airplane that gives a much poorer pitch response. Don't know if you've noticed, but I fly electric too, at all power levels and types. It's fun, lots of fun, but not nearly as exciting as gas and not nearly as light.
