Just found your channel. I am up in Scotland and have a small orchard with a few Victoria plum trees but the last few years we have lost most of our crop due to the Codling moth. We had great harvests prior to that so really need to prune our trees more. I have quite a few water shoots/sprouts and wondered whether you thought I should simply prune these out at the moment? Thanks.

      @@andrewdowniephd Hi Andrew.
Many thanks for watching video and your question.
Definitely cut back the water shoots at this time of year, as well as undertaking any pruning that is required. Generally the tree will produce water shoots if it has been pruned hard the previous year so a little and more balanced approach is required.
As far as codling moth is concerned, you can buy codling moth traps. They hang in your tree, look like a tent, and attract the moth so it cannot lay eggs on the flowers.
There are 2 different types of moth trap, 1 for apples and 1 type for plum.
      Hope this helps you 🪴🌼

Thanks. Really like how you take the time to explain which choises you make and why. Most video's don't really explain or show. This helps a lot for a new garden owner like me 😉

@diyhomeandgardening No problem at all, subscribed too 👍 Thanks, I will probably take you up on that! To be fair, it looks fairly healthy and my son and I enjoyed some of the fruit. Can't see any silver leaf or nasty bits. Do you reckon it's too late to prune now or still ok? 🤔

@@funktionalitee Good that you have managed to try some of the fruits, always nice to have your children buy into growing your own food.
Pruning now will still be okay, probably up to end of August but just make sure to prune on a dry day.
Enjoy your gardening experience and all the eating of fruits 🪴

can i add please, when pruning dead/diseased you dont include them as part of the 1/3rd of the years pruning. plum maggotts also leave the fruit as maggotts and make their way into the soil under the tree thats where you break the cycle by removing and fruit thats dropped or shows its infected but still on the tree, a guard around the base prevents any maggotts trying to climb up in the spring, and a good winter tree wash twice or even 3 times over the winter the last being just before bud break.

Hi George. Thanks for watching and comments.
Correct on the assumption that the dead volume does not get included into the one third calculation but generally as the dead is interspersed with general stems to remove it is easier to look at the volume as a whole.
The maggots that are in the fruit come from the plum moth so don’t climb up the trees. To prevent codling moth you hang a pheromone trap, 1 per 4 or 5 trees, to trap the male moths.
For winter hygiene you can use an application of winter wash so long as it is applied prior to bud break.
Grease bands can be applied to stop winter moth caterpillars climbing the tree trunk and feeding on the leaves and buds but this is a different pest to the one that produces a maggot found in the fruit. Likewise, maintaining an area around the base of the tree that is clear of grass is very useful.
Hope this helps to clarify a few bits for you. All the best 🍎🍒
