Why Rocket Power was AWESOME! 🛹

- Do you remember Rocket Power? I loved watching Rocket Power back in the day. Rocket Power was a coming-of-age show the followed a group of sporty kids in California. The crew - Otto, Reggie, Twister and Sam, were obsessed with playing extreme sports like skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, and street hockey. But this show was about so much more than growing up and playing sports. In this video, I talk about some of the reasons why I think Rocket Power was such an awesome show. If you liked this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more!

Question: What did you think of Rocket Power?
It was an awesome show.
Great Choice! Loved the video!
@@Mypromiselive Thank you! :)
not enough on otto..he was my fave...his flaws felt real and his ego was insane
@@razkable Me too. His ego and arrogance were often his downfall but he still had a heart of gold.
Tito was the heart and soul of the show
He really was. I loved his personality 😊
I can see why some people say Rocket Power hasn't aged well, but I still have fond memories of it.
I think maybe the slang is a part of that reason.
@@DialUpDigest That and Klasky-Csupo simply put had terrible animation. Even Rugrats had that issue.
@@jackcarraway4707
I like Rocket Power but I never wanted to do sports I'm not a sports type person I'm more of a animated movies and videogames person.
"there was a push to get kids away from staring at screens all day and back to playing outside" heh and now look where we are
I think the problem has gotten way worse 😰
@@DialUpDigest well now you can go online with your smartphone and use data instead of wifi
@@oooh19 Good point - increased accessibility to tech has made it easier for everyone to go online wherever they are. That makes it easier to get entertainment from a screen instead of going outside and having fun with other people.
@@DialUpDigest is that sarcasm? Are you just one of those people who can’t accept that smartphones exist?
@@jakeystarsuper Hello JackeyStar. Nope, I wasn't being sarcastic.
The kids were very inspiring to play most of the time but Otto has a lot to learn about safety and common sense. He had a terrible habit of breaking rules like playing in off limits zones, ignoring orders not to go out in storms, consistently ignoring his responsibility to work at the Shack.
I remember when the show premiered on Monday, August 16, 1999 and I noticed this past August 16 in 2021 was also on a Monday!
otto was a jerk much of the time
Very true and he also gets obsessed with winning too much.
Your analysis definitely allowed me to appreciate the show more for what it was focusing on being different and wanting to better versions of ourselves with each passing day because that is something I try to do each day myself in real life.
Thank you Rohan! 😊 Yes, I really appreciated this show - it's focus on extreme sports meant the characters were always pushing themselves to be better and grow. It was such an inspirational message that anyone can benefit from.
Reggie would’ve been the perfect girl to enter a beauty pageant. She has the looks and the attitude for it.
she probably wouldnt be interested but it'd be refreshing to see a "tomboy" win over a "girly girl" (well even though im girly myself) still it'd definitely make an interesting episode. i picture otto and twister being jerky but coming around but sam would be helping reggie out w/ preparing for the pageant. he was always so supportive. sam and reggie really clicked!
They really did. Do you think Sam and Reggie would’ve had a good romantic relationship?
@@ikennakonkwo5939 maybe. maybe if the show continued they might date
It was their love of computers that bonded them together along with their maturity and both of them having only one parent, even though Sam's dad is still alive. Sam and Reggie are a bit more mature than Otto and Twister, their love of adventure and sports is what bonded them 2 together but if not for Reggie, Sam really wouldn't be part of the group. He has a phobias and lack of confidence due to the lack of a positive male role model so he's out of Otto and Twister's league of the extreme sport fan club but because of Reggie's empathy toward Sam, he becomes more attached toward her so that gives him access to the group. Despite her tomboy-ish nature, she still has her female nurture side but Sam eventually benefits the whole group with his high IQ. He's like the Brain on Arthur, his more clever way of thinking has influenced the group's next direction so it's like a perfect puzzle in the end. Reggie's bossy nature at times is what keeps the guys, especially Otto in check but with the group unified, they all achieve great goals.
@@MrKelMills I like that reggie is not overly tomboyish to the point where it makes her immature or an clone of otto
I loved this show as a kid and just re-watched it this year, and I thought it still held up incredibly well. I loved the characters, the relationships between the kids, parents, neighbors, the voice acting done by actual kids/teens, the troubles they had and the lessons. I also like Twister's Hispanic heritage, Otto and Reggie losing their mother, Sam having divorced parents/ I also enjoyed the slang and such it was all really fun and sometimes a tear-jerker. I think when people think it's funny to make a certain eras slang it's like, how old are you? We don't say "dynamite!" anymore but that doesn't make it stupid, it's fun how language evolves especially with kids and I always liked hearing the slang this friend group made up and inside-jokes between them.
Also, though I've never been a sports kinda girl, except I did play ice hockey as a kid (but wasn't good) and tried to skateboard (also not good), but I never found the extreme sports in this show cringey, just seemed like California kids and city kids are usually into sports. I also loved that Reggie played and was great at extreme sports, it did show girls could compete and do it too. But I also liked that they showed other interests, Twister loved film-making and singing, Reggie loved writing and interviewing, Sam loved computers and game design. Otto's maybe the only one without outside interests from sports, though he does have a great work ethic for his sports and doesn't give up on something just because he's having trouble with it. You could maybe only see him pursuing sports professionally for the rest of his life, though the others could if they wanted to.
Otto is super funny and he can be an asshole but typically gets called out on it, interesting when they show him straight up mis-remembering an event so that he looks like the good guy and the victim, defiantly has narcissistic traits but can also tell his family and friendships do count when it comes down to them or fame.
Only thing I didn't like was the whole weird fourth season. I don't like the new voice actors for Sam, or Twister, and I hate the story line with the new step-mom, both the meeting her and wedding movies. She was incredibly uncaring and ignorant of what step-parenting or any parenting looks like and Raymundo is worse than usual in ignoring his children's needs. I much preferred Breezy, she seemed to actually want to get to know the kids and showed actual concern for Reggie when they were having issues and went to her one-on-one.
I'm a downhill skater and I think this show somewhat inspired me
I saw one of these back in the day; the fellow got in trouble for something but wouldn't tell on his sister so she wouldn't
It was a pretty good show. I don't think it was ever super popular, but I enjoyed it 😊
Rocket power was a cult classic
I agree 😊
@@DialUpDigest sam and Reggie where the best characters
@@duranandrews2326 I liked all the characters, but I think Reggie was my favorite. Sam is a close second :)
@@DialUpDigest I love all them too Reggie felt like his best friend like on the episode when sm bio dad came to visit
Besides skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, fox kids action man, and the original max steel. Rocket power had gotten tons of kids away from PlayStations and tv's. I was 7 when this came out and even though my disability stopped me from playing most extreme sports back then I wanted to learn about them. Years later I became inspired by one episode of RP to try out playing Rugby. Let's just say they're right about tapping your ears. But it's the most fun you can ever have. Another one of my favorite episodes is when they did that music video surf town. It still has me laughing like no tomorrow seeing twister getting chased by fangirls. I did like the finally. It was nice that Ray found happiness again and that the rocket siblings love their new stepmother. But we need shows like RP again to inspire later generations.
I loved how Rocket Power really encouraged kids to get outside and play. I watched a lot of TV when I was younger, but I still always went out as much as I could and played sports. The episode where they made that Surf Town music video was hilarious, lol. I liked how at the end, Ray found a new partner as well. It was nice to see him find someone after he was widowed. I agree, I haven't seen a show like Rocket Power, but I think kids today and in future generations could benefit from it.
@@DialUpDigest I went outside as much as I could to growing up. Especially during the summer. I think about that music video a lot, still funny seeing twister getting chased by girls even after their concert failed. It was definitely nice seeing Ray and the kids happy at the wedding. Danielle would've wanted Ray and their kids move on from her death and be happy again. It would be awesome if Nick decided to do a tv movie of RP with the kids in high school still doing extreme sports. Ray and his wife having a kid together giving Otto and Reggie a baby brother or sister. Tito and ray still running the surf shack. And like I've said we need cartoons like RP to make a comeback. Kids today are to obsessed with technology
@@slanetroyard92 I agree, I think Danielle would have wanted to see Ray with someone again. That sounds like a great idea- having the Rocket Power crew older and having a baby sibling. But I think during the series the character did age, because there were birthdays throughout. Yes, kids (and everyone really) are too obsessed with tech.
@@DialUpDigest it does sound like a great movie and inspiration to do a continuation Like AGU did for rugrats. Sadly your right everyone in general is obsessed with Tec.
I have not seen this show in years. And it is better then I remembered. Now i know where i picked up the word dude from lol. I been saying ever since i heard it in this show up to today in my 30s.

I remember watching this is a kid it always did inspire me to go out and do something active. I played football basketball baseball wrestling along with biking rollerblading ice skating hiking and all other stuff. As for skateboarding snowboarding and surfing I never really considered those my past time I tried skateboarding I wasn't good at it but however snowboarding I never could do because I never went up to the mountains in my family never had the time to do that. I didn't even learn how to surf until I was 23 but I was in a foreign country France south I could have done it probably when I was in the United States but however even so I never really had the time to do so.
Wow, you played a lot of sports! I've always wanted to try snowboarding. Cool! It's never to late to learn a new sport like surfing 🏄
@@DialUpDigest I will say this about the show I know twister always runs around with his camera filming now in most cases I found that not safe because he has to carry the camera every time he films. Even in most cases he would duct tape the camera to his head. Well nowadays you don’t need those kind of cameras anymore you can just use a GoPro. I have GoPro and I put GoPro‘s on here my channel whenever I go biking whenever I go to the shooting range hiking you name it. If GoPro was a thing back in his day he would be using a GoPro instead of a video camera. if somehow they decided to reboot rocket power twister would be using a GoPro all the time. Unlike rocket power I found the animation very similar to the wild Thornberrys Rugrats ahhhh real monsters Ronald McDonald’s animated tv series. I was kind of surprised that Rugrats was able to do crossovers with ahhh real monsters and wild Thornberrys but never came across do a crossover with rocket power I don’t think they need to do a crossover with Ronald McDonald’s TV show.
Rocket Power. The extreme cartoon that gets you pumped to outside and play.
So pumped 🚲
Rocket Power was a show I wasn't intrested in as a kid and haven't heard super good things about it now. But you make some great points about just how difrent it was for the time and pushed some boudries in its own way.

I was born when Rocket Power came out and I love it plus I loved the video game as well Beach Bandits plus I like Reggie she's a cool girl
I wasn't the biggest fan of Rocket Power growing up I always found the show boring but I learned to appreciate it as I got older it is a classic and legendary cartoon in it's own right I'm surprise they never made the Rocket Power & Rugrats comic crossover into a movie or a crossover episode.
I would have loved to see a Rocket Power crossover, that sounds cool 😊
@@DialUpDigest Yeah wonder how that look
@@mr.checkyourself4672Sam missed out.
Love Rocket Power!! 😊😊❤❤
Me too 😊
I used to really like Rocket Power as a kid, and it did influence me to learn to rollerblade and boogie board. But I don't exactly look back on it as fondly as an adult. I remember binging the show a few years ago after a vacation on Cape Cod that made me think about it, and I didn't think it was as good as I remembered. Certain characters and the language they used made me cringe a good bit. But that said, I can't in good conscience say I hate it, because I did have some good memories with it and there were some enjoyable aspects (such as sand in the potato salad).
You also outlined pretty well why Sam is the best character of the four (and the one that made me cringe the least during that binge). He was the most level-headed and showed the most growth, going from an awkward nerd who didn't really know how to do much to a genuine part of the group who had something to bring to the table with his intellect. I remember there was one episode where this culminated in him creating a computer game based on the gang.
I also can't hate Tito, he was brilliant.
I completely agree. For example, when I went back & watched the show, Otto's personality really got on my nerves. He's what Gerald from "Hey Arnold!" would've been if Gerald had fewer people that held him accountable & called him out on his crap. The slang, like you said, was really cringey. This show is, to a fault, a product of it's time
I agree, the language was cringey sometimes when I rewatched it now, but back then I thought they were so cool, lol. Sam did have the most growth. He came a long way from being the awkward new kid in the series' premiere. I loved how he stood out because of his smarts - he was able to become a very important part of his group and they really appreciated him because of that. I really liked Tito as well, he always gave great advice 😊
You thought that much over a kid show dude stop
Fantastic analysis! Really agree about the ethic diversity in the show. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback 😊
I love this channel
Thank you! 😊
That's how it was in the 90s. Early 2000s
Now, a lot of parents I don't care. They'll just give their kids a tablet, a cell phone computer game console and tell them if they get bored. They can just play that eat junk food. I mean, yes, I had a PlayStation 2 and before that I had a Nintendo 64, but I would play outside until I got into middle school in high school. Because there wasn't really no one to hang out with. Although I still got outside and with my cousin, who was living with us at the time and my little sister to go bike riding to go rig up some stuff to go skateboard in the backyard
Anyone else wonder if these kids would grow up to become potheads?
Between Twister on tocket power and Carly on iCarly, I got my love of making videos.
This show is phenomenal
I owned a skateboard because of this show... I wish I took the time to learn how to use it.
Cool! Now that I think about it, I think this show is what made me start rollerblading when I was a kid.
I still own a couple DVD's of this show and I can say that this show was cool af
One of my other favorite shows is CatDog and Rocko's Modern Life.

Yes, I'm trying to make this channel have more variety.
She's posted videos about other shows before (Rugrats, All Grown Up, Doug)
I love Hey Arnold! how can anyone NOT love Hey Arnold?
Rocket Power was the Magnum Opus back in the day and it was way ahead of its time,The same thing could be said for The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius.
Looking back, I'm surprised how nuanced this show was. There were some adults who were just prigs who wanted to stamp out fun wherever they saw it, but the majority of adults on the show were reasonable and there was the underlying message of, "Often times, the rules are set for a reason." Even characters like Mr. Stimpleton had their shining moments, like the episode where Otto was his caddy.
Why do you think the show ended after the TV movie, the big day?
How did you feel about the show ending after that?
Maybe it was just its time to end? I think it could have gone another season maybe.
You might be right. It wasn’t fair. The show could’ve had more episodes with Noelani in it like the rugrats had more episodes with Kira. Noelani is extremely pretty. What do you think she would’ve been interested in had she spent more time in Ocean Shores?

I was 100% sure the show took place in Hawaii. Learn something new everyday 😁
I was so surprised when I found out they were actually in California. I thought Reggie and Otto were Hawaiian too.
@@DialUpDigest Tito was from Hawaii and there was an episode where he was homesick. there are hints and mentions that it's California
Reggie and Otto are tanish because they're outside practically all the time and I think they're mom is native Hawaiian.
@@jackcarraway4707 exactly! theyre out in the California sun all day lol
@@jackcarraway4707 Good point, being outside playing sports all day is an easy way to get tan.
What is your most favorite Rocket Power movie?
Good question, I'm not sure. Which was your favorite?
Reggie’s Big Beach Break was cool, but the best movies were the ones featuring Noelani. She’s god damn gorgeous. Excuse my language. This could get a little off topic, but it wasn’t fair that the show finished after that last movie, and 3 more seasons of rugrats happened after the Paris movie. I’m not saying I have a problem with that last part, but Noelani should’ve had more screen time and it would’ve been really dope to see Otto and Reggie have a parent to child bond like Chuckie had time with Kira and Kimi had time with Chaz. The sad part is that she has a nice voice and we never got to see what she would be really good at coming to ocean shores from Hawaii.
While I wasn't a huge fan of the show when I was a kid I always liked that it was different. I do remember that one episode though where the main group basically faked Twister's death in a mountain biking accident to prank his big brother. They even video taped his brother crying about it to blackmail him. To this day as a adult I think they went a little too far with that episode.
I agree, that episode went way too far. It was disturbing 😨

as a kid I didn't care much for RP. I only watched it if nothing else was on and to me it was just a slice of life show with some extreme sports stuff thrown in. I found the sports thing to be the most unrelatable part of the show ironically. I saw a few episodes recently for nostalgia purposes and now I see it differently. it's an average show with some hit or miss moments.
I think RP was an overlooked show for many. I'm glad you gave it a chance and see it differently now, it was pretty cool 😊
