Trying To Learn The Shepherd's Leap (Salto del Pastor) | Quirky Customs

  • The salto del pastor - ‘shepherds’ leap’ - is a traditional mode of getting around on the Canary Islands. Goat herders living in the highlands used to - and still do - use it to cross otherwise impassable terrain, mountain slopes, or ravines. A wooden pole called a garrote, several meters in length, helps them vault over obstacles. The islands’ indigenous population created the technique, which was adopted by later locals. Euromaxx reporter Ruben Kalus visited the Spanish island of Tenerife to try his hand at it.

Much credit to the host for being so game to try, but safe enough to listen to his hosts. It was a beautiful visit with great people, but obviously challenging weather. Good outdoors sports men and women know when to call it a day to live to see another! 👍🙏🌈

I don't see why others are bringing up so many issues with the reporter. Yeah, the leaps are not the greatest, but the reporter is mostly there to report on a custom rather than actively learning it. It is also to say that the training area which they had seems to be restricted to the single small jump shown as opposed to the real mountain with drastically increased heights downwards (with the addition of the coach not letting him go further).
Nice video; achieved your pre-set title and expectations and that's all we should expect

Really nice. But you should have chosen Gran Canaria instead of Tenerife. Gran Canaria is waaaay better in everything: amazing and more varied landscapes, beaches simple on another level than those of Tenerife, the best cultural and social life on the archipelago, the indisputable business centre of the isles as well, the best shopping... Go visit Gran Canaria next time, you'll thank me 🇮🇨🇪🇸😍👌
