Hardaway was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 1993 NBA draft (third pick overall), but was traded along with three future first-round picks to the Orlando Magic for the rights to first overall pick Chris Webber. The Magic's intent was to draft Webber and pair him with Shaquille O'Neal until Hardaway - whose desire was to play alongside O'Neal - requested a second workout to show why he should be their pick. Two days before the draft, Hardaway participated in a pick-up basketball game with several Magic players and local talent and impressed the organization enough to make the draft day trade. During the 1994-95 NBA season, the Magic won a franchise record 57 games while Hardaway averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. He was named a starter in his first NBA All-Star game and was named All-NBA First Team. The highlight of the playoff run was the second-round defeat of the Chicago Bulls. Along with Shaquille O'Neal, he led his team to the NBA Finals, where they were swept by the Houston Rockets. Despite the sweep Hardaway averaged 24.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 8 assists in the series, while shooting 50% from the field. An injury to star teammate Shaquille O'Neal at the start of the 1995-96 NBA season forced Hardaway to garner more of the scoring load during the first few weeks of the season. He responded by leading the Magic to a 17-5 start. He was named NBA Player of the Month for November by averaging 27.0 points, 6.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 1 block per game. He was named a starter in the NBA All-Star Game for the second consecutive season while leading the Magic to a franchise record 60 wins. For the season he was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second consecutive year while averaging 21.7 points, 7.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds and capturing 166 steals which was good for 5th in the league. He also finished third in MVP voting. Hardaway was again the only player in the NBA who averaged at least twenty points and five assists and shot fifty percent on field goals during the regular season. The Magic's playoff run ended in the Eastern Conference Finals to the eventual champion Chicago Bulls. In the twelve-game playoff run Hardaway averaged 23.3 points, 6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds. The departure of O'Neal during the off-season to the Los Angeles Lakers left Hardaway as the lone star on the Magic heading into the 1996-97 NBA season. Hardaway struggled through an injury-filled season but still managed to be named a starter for the third consecutive time in the NBA All-Star game. During the season, Hardaway, being the team leader, led a coup to fire then coach Brian Hill with only 33 games left during the season. In 59 regular-season games he averaged 20.5 points, 5.6 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game and was named to the All-NBA Third Team. The Magic managed to make the playoffs with a 45-win season. In the playoffs the Magic fell 0-2 to the Miami Heat in the first round. Hardaway then scored 42 points in game 3 and 41 in Game 4 to force a Game 5 in Miami (becoming the 1st player in NBA history to score 40 points in back to back playoff games when his team scores less than 100 while also being the first player to score 40 points back to back in the playoffs against a Pat Riley-coached team). Hardaway scored 33 points in Game 5 but the Magic fell short. Hardaway finished the playoffs with averages of 31 points, 6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. His playoff scoring average finished a close second to Michael Jordan (31.1). A devastating left knee injury incurred early in the 1997-98 NBA season required surgery and forced him to miss the majority of the season. Despite injury, he was voted to start NBA All-Star Game for fourth straight year, and had six points and three assists in 12 minutes at New York. However, he was criticized for attempting a comeback sooner than expected by playing in the All-Star Game. He played his last game a week after the All-Star game and missed the remainder of the season (Hardaway has since endured another four surgeries on his left knee up to the present that have gradually deteriorated his explosive athletic abilities). In 19 games he averaged 16.4 points, 4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.5 steals.

      @@timhdz Penny's knee injury happened in 1997 season. Shaq left in 96. And Shaq admitted after he retired that the reason he left ORL was mostly because of Hollywood opportunities like his movies and music. Of course the reason he gave when he was playing was because ORL did not offer him a contract fast enough to prevent people from criticizing on what would be seen as a selfish move on his side. They also made it in the finals in 95 with Penny playing 77 games with 20ppg at 50%FG. I would not call that injury plague yet. Lol

      @@aliceandcat2228 • Shaq wanted the max that he rightfully deserved and Orlando was too cheap to give him one. What was he supposed to do when he gets offered a 7yr/$120M contract by LA? Turn it down and wait for the Magic to make you their minds? Penny was a better fit for Orlando than C-Webb. Shaq did them a solid.

    • @aliceandcat2228
      @aliceandcat2228 3 роки тому +5

      @@skah80 According to Pat Williams the GM of ORL that time, they match LAL offer to Shaq. But Shaq still choose LAL. So it's not like they did not try. ORL team also was a loaded and a championship team in 96 while LAL pretty much almost kick everyone out in the team to clear cap room and had to rebuild the roster. That and ORL was the only team to defeat CHI with Jordan since DET in a full playoff series. So in terms of winning, ORL had the pieces to challenge CHI and the ones who would have reigned in the East right after Jordan. So Shaqs choice for the same money is stay in ORL ready to win or join a rebuilding LAL at that time.

    As a retired semi senior citizen play the game of basketball as a guard, who has seen NBA since the 60s, I can say that Penny Hardaway should go down in history and even the Hall of Fame regardless of his show coming as one of the best guards ever in the NBA. Penny Hardaway in my mind, was So good, in his prime, was definitely on the level of any guard and the NBA. The Orlando Magic was so good they were almost Unstoppable. During that time when Shaquille O'Neal join the Orlando Magic his inability to increase his foul shooting and developing a high percentage shooting ability within 15 ft was probably the only reason why they did not go further. To add to injury the media tried to create problems between these two players relationship.

    I can remember back in the mid 90's when Penny step on the scene in the NBA, dude ripped the league apart. he was something different, we haven't seen a guy 6'7" with the ability to run, jump and handle the rock like he did, at that time. The closes payer to come near was Pipen, who wasn't much of a passer like Penny but had all of the other skill sets. In the 90's I was the biggest Penny fan in the City of Houston. back in Junior high and high school my teammates use to call me Lil Penny because I use to look like the guy and dedicated my game to him. The 95 Finals was hard for me as I went with the Orlando Magic to win the series vs the Rockets. It was bitter sweet because as a you kid my family lived in Orlando for a few years before moving back home to Houston in 1987. I can remember going to Westwood Mall in Southwest Houston to purchase the Nike Penny Flight shoe. This wasn't his 1st signature, but I wanted that shoe. Every shoe that dropped in the 90's that had Penny name and the 1-cent logo attached to it I purchased them. Thanks for the memories Penny.

      Honestly Grant Hill and Penny was different from Pippen. He never had a truly fluid flashy handle like those two had. Penny half spin step back and Grant Hill hesi-crossover moves were unstoppable. Pippen never had a go to move like that thats why he peaked at 22 points a game with no Jordan.

    A 6'7 ATHLETIC point guard who could shoot, score, drive, PASS. His body unfortunately failed him within the NBA, but when healthy he was a top 5 player for those few peak years. Would have been in the HOF & a champion. Imagine what he & Shaq could have done & almost did! So happy to see him rediscover his calling & regain the love for basketball/coaching

    • @owainkanaway8345
      @owainkanaway8345 3 роки тому +1

      His body didn't fail him. His injuries later on his career could have been avoided. What happened to Penny was that he had a cartilage tear on his left knee in the beginning of the 96-97 season, and had surgery that season (see 1st link). After he had the surgery Penny was back on the court again within 2 1/2 weeks (see 2nd link). Penny's knee was not going to fully heal within 2 1/2 weeks, so Penny ended up playing 59 games in the 96-97 season with a knee that wasn't 100% after the surgery. In the 97-98 season he tore his cartilage again and his left knee was forever weakened (see LA times link). Had Orlando allowed Penny's knee to fully heal the first time he tore his cartilage, he would have been 100% healthy for the 97-98 season, and probably would have beaten Chicago.

    Penny's life is such an inspiring story. He was a star with all the fame, he was at the top then lost it all. I think only Penny himself knows what that feels like. Then Lester Middle School saved him just as he saved the school and those kids.
    After being on the top of the world, went through depression and doubts, he came back to his roots and gave back to his community. Some media might portray Penny as a disappointment, but life isn't about that. Life is about journey through different stages and realize your own purposes.
    I'm just a fan growing up watching him play, but I'd like to think that by helping and providing guidance to those kids in need, Penny found true happiness.

    Penny Hardaway was my favourite player when I was a teenager in the mid 90s. Tall, Skilled, quick, explosive and a very cerebral player, to me one of the very best, FOREVER.

    Man I didn't know anything about Shaq requesting Penny. I'm only 11 minutes in, but, man this is a great documentary.

    Penny Hardaway is one of my favorite players. I grew up watching him and many times I'd rock his Orlando Magic black jersey when playing pick-up with my friends. So many fun memories! Thank you Penny and God bless you!

    I have no interest in basketball but came across the 30 for 30 ESPN documentary about the Orlando Magic. I watched this after and have total respect for Penny. What a great, humble, articulate, passionate man and what a great role model. Respect
