John Scalici facilitates a rhythm game called "drum talk" in which students must train their ears to hear three signature beats which must be repeated immediately after they are heard. If someone misses the cue---they're out!! The game teaches valuable listening skills and has many different variations. John uses this to train kids to listen for "breaks" in traditional W. African music.

It's a cool concept, but look at all the others who's out of the game, just sitting there yawning and not paying attention any more. Seems this game only works in small groups so that you can start over quickly and everybody can join in again.

Tom--thanks for your comment--these visually impaired kids asked me to play the game this way. I had worked with them for 13 weeks. This very late in the afternoon, and we had time to play a few more games. The game does indeed go quickly. thanks.

      I agree 100%,
but generally player elimination is a staple of Ameritrash (not as derogatory here, "technical term" ;) ). They sure love some downtime!
      such a diversity is great,
      and good game well played!

Interesting, inspirational game. Good work, Mr. Scalici.
Nothing bad happened (regarding hate comments), this is competition game concept. These children (with special needs) who got out- still enjoy and keep smiling.
    ::
Haters should do the same thing- try to understand, enjoy and keep smiling.
    Have a nice day!

This is a great game Kevin. As you practice, you get better. It's competition. there are losers when you compete. There are also losers in football, basketball, chess, swimming and LIFE. This lesson teaches to do your best and there is no promise you will win. Just like life. It's not a drum circle.

Hello my friend! The game "Drum Talk" is not an "ECHO" game, but rather a "question and answer game"...I ask kids to include one or two sound that they heard in my "question", into their "answer"....So it's not an "echo" game. The second level of the game involves the "three quick beats", which I developed in order to keep everyone "on their toes" and involved in the game! I hope this makes sense! The kids who "miss" the three beats all agree that they "lose" their drum, narrowing the game to just a few players. It' not mean or disrespectful. The kids LOVE the game. In this particular example, the kids are ALL blind. They LOVE the challenge. I hope this helps you. Let me know if I can clarify anything else for you in order for you to use the game to fit your needs! Thanks so much! My boo, explaining this game is available at:

I played a game similar to this one in my Music Appreciation class, my teacher let us all pick one percussion instrument and we all had to play a solo at one point, it was really fun and I'm kind of sad that he said we are only going to get to do it once a month.

Dear people who watch this drum talk game:
I just received this message from a very uninformed and unintelligent internet troll.
"Just watched a vidio, where a lady takes a kids drum, for playing out of turn, when there is no turn. You should be ashamed of your self, for letting that happen. "
The video that this person is referring to contains footage fom my 14yr residency at the Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind.
The kids are playing (and loving) and game a created called "Drum Talk" where the kids have to repond to certain rhythmic cues over time. If they miss, they are "out" and the game continues until 2 players are left. AND YES, SOME KIDS ARE YAWNING BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN PLAYING DJEMBE FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF AND IT'S LIKE 4PM.
PLEASE understand that there is nothing about this game that is unfair, mean, or unproductive in any way what so ever! It hurts AND angers me for people to make judgements about things they have no idea about.
THE KIDS ACTUALLY CAME UP WITH THEIR OWN RULES FOR THE GAME!!
This person who commented clearly didn't take the time to read the comments and the description.
If you are so compelled, please watch the video and leave a positive comment in the video. Hopefully this will counterbalance the uninformed and uneducated haters:)
