I’m having flashbacks. My mom bought one, brand new in 1990. I *begged* her not to buy it. Alas, I was but a 12 year old girl, so my cries went unheeded. THIS POS almost got us killed so many times! It would be zipping along just fine, then suddenly slow to like one mile an hour, making a horrible sputtering noise as other cars honked at us and drove around, as if we were doing this on purpose. Then suddenly it would go back to normal. It spent as much time in the shop as it did in the driveway and yet no one could ever figure out what was wrong. My uncle eventually gave us his Mazda, so we sold the Précis to a guy who genuinely thought he was ripping us off. We were just glad to see it go! 🙋🏽‍♀️

I had a 88 precis that I bought brand new I bought it to drive back and forth from Ct to NJ on a weekly bases. I put over 200k before it got totaled. Only things I ever did was oil and spark plug change whenever I remembered and the clutch one time. Over all it was very good car for me

Might be going into a 1986 Excel soon. Need a daily driver with good gas mileage and I trust Hyudai so I figured I'd give the Excel a shot.

Brings me back, a white 88 precis was my 1st car , it had a red interior (ugh) and it was sooooo soo slow (top speed 76mph_forme) I really beat up this car hard ! But wow now it's a practical hatchback lol

Lol this was my 1st car too, silver 89 Precis RS. Got pulled once, cop said I was going 78 but I told him it couldn't even go that fast unless it was downhill. Think he felt bad because I only got a warning. The muffler fell off so I had my dad's friend install a flowmaster exhaust. Fun times

OMG! When I was a little kid my mom bought A brand new Precis LS Which was the top of the line version. This were absolutely horrendous little trash cars. Our brand new Precis With so badly built and so unreliable that even mitsubishi didn't want to put To call it a mitsubishi But rather they put a disclaimer everywhere A mitsubishi badge should have gone. That's why it says imported by mitsubishi. The car was not called AA mitsubishi Precis Instead it was always referred to as a Precis Imported by mitsubishi. That should have been a warning. Even with the 5 speed manual Which was offered in the mid level and top of the line trims The car was so painfully slow and underpowered that they were Almost all destined to blow their head gaskets. Are brand new Precis Chronically suffered from a major overheating problem that started after the 1st week my mother bought it. The car was actually designed by mitsubishi and Sold as the Mirage in the early 1980s but then sold the design to Hyundai in Korea. The original mitsubishi Mirage/Dodge Plymouth Colts Were far from being very durable little cars but once Hyundai started building them they became dramatically worse. When young people who ask me why people make fun Of Hyundai And kia Cars of today and why Korea and cars still have terrible resale values when compared to their Japanese competition I Ask them if they have ever heard of the Hyundai excel. Consumer Reports once referred to the Hyundai excel As the cheapest car or you could buy IN THE WORST SENSE OF THE WORD! Their 1989 test subject a Top of the line Hyundai excel GLS with The 3 speed automatic took Over 19 seconds to reach 60 mph and the car's top speed was only 78 mph. They compared it with the 1989 Chevrolet Sprint AKA Geo metro with a 3 cylinder engine and a 3 speed automatic which only took 13.5 seconds To reach 60 mph. They commented that the excel was the 1st car with an automatic transmission that actually rolled backwards When you took your foot off the brake pedal. In normal city driving they commented that they were constantly having to floor the accelerator just to keep up with traffic and they advised against any highway driving due to the cars underpowered engine. I am so amazed that You actually found A Precis / Excel That was still on the road.

Lol it’s 2020 and you still think Hyundai and Kia are bad?, Hyundai and Kia makes good cars now better than most Japanese brands except for Toyota and Mazda of course, Hyundai and Kia reliability and quality has dramatically went up, you can’t compare old Hyundai’s to new Hyundai’s, that’s not really fair when Hyundai and Kia are one of the best auto brands to buy as of 2020

Mitsubishi owned a part of Hyundai which is how this car came to be. My dad had a 1988 Hyundai Excel. But I've owned a 2007 Hyundai Elantra for the past 12 years and it's been a GREAT car, and am currently looking at an Accent, which incidentally is the "new" Excel.

Another Précis survivor! My mom bought a brand new one in 1990, and that POS should never have been allowed on the road! Did yours randomly slow to a crawl and sputter?

@@joskjj3625 Is so Hyundai and Kia make better cars than is better cars than they did but they definitely still don't build good cars when when compared to Honda and Toyota. Take a look at their mediocre resale values values and count how many 5 year you're old and older and older Hyundai cars are still on the road. I'll bet there are more than double the amount of 20 year old toyotas yodas then there are there are 5 year old honey Hyundai's. Once you've done that I then want you to check out how many Hyundai Hyundai and Kia cars cars are on the safety recall list with no fix in sight.. There's never been a Toyota where Toyota Toyota recommended that you not not park your vehicle near a structure because because of a risk that they would burst into flames spontaneously spontaneously like is happening billing with both Hyundai and Kia. Yeah great cars! Lol
