Okay old ppl here who have totally redone a large double wide. Were paint drywall contractors in another life. Also hubby was a Navy electrician. Owned many homes...two things caulk and drywall mud fixes a world of things. And don't worry about the optics of the paint! When you get flooring, furniture, curtains in you won't even notice it. You are doing great and your boys are learning from parents with a strong work ethic.

Thank goodness the crown moulding is done! Anything that involves complex miters and I just walk away. My second husband (may he rest in peace) was a contractor and he taught me all about trim, filler, and caulk. (the carpenter's best friends) When you're dealing with a retrofit nothing's gonna be perfect....but, you can make it look perfect. I think your crown moulding looks really nice and you should endorse yourself for a job well done! -- Now, I can hardly wait to see what you're gonna do with the floors :)

I've been waiting for this video, as I will be also doing crown molding in my retirement mobile in Florida. I got to the part with the compass & angle tool and turned it off. Your title had already put fear in me of crown molding, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to measure the molding and do a good job. I got brave and watched the second half this morning; thanks for keeping it real and showing the bad with the good! Hello from sweden! The formula to cutting angels with miter/compound saws is this:
Measure the angle for an outside or inside Corner with a bevel gauge. If it reads 88 degrees you take 180-88 = 92 and then you divide that by 2 =46. So that(46) is the angle you put on your mitersaw . (46 is actually 44 degrees) but beacuse we have a mitersaw we have to think backwards :)
All this is beacuse 0 and 90 is the same on a mitersaw. If you put your saw angle at 5 degrees its actually 85. This is called the complementary angle.
    Hope i helped a little :)

That looks terrific. Caulk is amazing. Sam, you're SO hard on yourself. But these are indeed the kinds of projects that people need to see. They need to see that the reality is that complex miters are REALLY difficult to execute perfectly. Inexperienced DIYers will benefit and take confidence from your project. You two are experienced and still had difficulty with this...and it still turned out great. And that two-color molding illusion is due to the green paint on the facing wall. In the previous paint video, you could see Sam begin to look bilious when he faced that wall...your white molding is no different.

We ran into the exact same problem yall did at the peak. The solution is simple! I placed an uncut piece of crown molding up to the peak along the top of wall and ceiling and simply drew a straight line down from the center of peak on the crown molding board and simply cut the line on my saw . Did this to both sides and had a perfect seam at the peak on the crown molding.

Please do not beat yourselves up over not getting these joints to fit any better than you did. I worked as a trim carpenter for a number of years and I installed a LOT of crown molding. In fact, I just never did get my joints to look much better than yours in a vaulted ceiling. After you folks got the caulk on, I think it looked GREAT! You guys GO
