we picked up this 100 year old Ice Box for a slick $50.00 and it works like a charm and is actually charming. See what I did there?

My grandfather had an icebox just like that but made of wood lined with metal on the inside.
As an 7 year old city boy I remember opening the door to check out this new 'contraption'.
Boy, did I get an ear full for leaving the door open too long.
INSTRUCTIONS: How to use an icebox and keep Grandpa happy
1. Decide on the item you need.
2. Know its location inside the cooler.
3. Open the door with one hand and lift the item with the other...NO SHOPPING.
4. Close the door IMMEDIATELY.
That was 60 years, funny how an inanimate object can bring so many memories.
Haha! Loved your story about Grandpa and the Icebox!
Mom used to do that with the electric frig too.
N Spctor lololol sweet story
My mom has one in her kitchen. She just uses it for dry storage. It is neat to see someone using it for the created purpose.
One method I've read about, for people who don't have access to a pond, is to make your own ice. Maybe ten large rectangular boxes, stainless, or waxed wood or something the ice won't stick to, or is flexible. Freeze a batch every freezing night, on the north porch, and put them in the ice house over the course of the winter. Just another of the morning chores--stash the night's ice. Then, hopefully, when spring comes, there's a good stash of ice to get you through the warm months.
imagine if they tried to protect the jobs of the people working at the ice box companies from the advent of the refrigerator ?...………………………………….they would have been using ice boxes for years after the refrigerator was already invented...………………..just to protect jobs
I have been considering freezing in buckets or boxes as well. The question would be what’s the perfect size for longevity and still be able to handle it.
I watched some videos on commercial ice block making which is stainless boxes inside a special freezer.
One drawback for using ice is that you can not freeze anything with it. Also keeping large amounts of frozen meat might be a challenge, I’d certainly have more questions then answers on those.
Always good to think outside the box, but there is a reason that nobody really used that system. Its not really practical, at 0F you will make roughly 1.2-1.4" of ice in 12 hours in that box (assuming its not closed or insulated). At 30F you will make about 1/8" of ice in 12 hours. And since ice insulates itself when it grows, to get the 10-15" thick blocks that are needed to store year around, it will take you about 7 full days below 0F. Or about 22 days at an average of 20F. This is why they let a full pond freeze up over the full winter then cut it all at once. With a normal winter in the midwest or out east, you are looking at freezing two maybe 3 blocks of ice doing it that way, vs hundreds off of a pond. He said he is currently freezing buckets of water in a chest freezer, the average chest freezer is around 0F and 9.5" thick, so with the air hitting from all sides instead of just one it should freeze solid in about 2-3 days.
DOUG, YOU SAID YOU WOULD PUT A LINK " HOW TO MAKE KOMBUCHA"
GUESS YOU FORGOT?

Just read about a diy icebox using sawdust in the complete home handbook from 1897 and from there found this video. Thanks !
Right how cool I'm gonna look this up great deal they got too
Saw dust doesnt work the best tho:(
@@samanthalove4408 what works best in this type of scenario? I don’t try these things; just like learning!
What a beautiful appliance!
Dirtpatcheaven I agree
I was just talking to my mother about this a few days ago about an ice box used to ACTUALLY be a box with ice in it. She said her family had a wooden one that drained through a copper tube and out a hole my grandfather drilled in the floor to fit around it. Her uncle had one of the metal ones like yours though. Thanks for putting a visual to my memory with Mom. Have a great day, Doug.
I am using my sons account, I used deliver ice to homes in the 30s, o this takes me back.
I used to live in an apartment in Chicago that still had the little ice delivery hatch on the back porch.
Trent KILLIANS my dad did too
30s? Wow, you've lived to see some incredible events and monumental changes.
@@nybiggs Lets say he was 15 years old... this person is about 105 years old if honest
I call bullshit on your story
I am learning so much about your lifestyle. I want so badly to make it my lifestyle to I would have no problem with an icebox, growing my own food, raising my own chickens, Etc. the only thing I worry about is having no electricity or Plumbing or water. my main concern is the fact that I am handicapped and cannot walk. I'm afraid it will be too much for me.My husband is of very little help but I am thinking about it. There are things I could do.
Round TWO. MY folks have one too. They keep dvds in it. 😆🤣 said I could have it if I want. 🥰😍🥰😍woo hoo!
That is just too neat, I've never seen one but I think you got a bargain for sure!
My admiration grows for you guys with each video I watch.
thanks Susie Q
This is the video that introduced me to your channel! I'm not sure it was new when I watched it, but now I'm a Homestead Homie! Thanks for sharing your life with me. I've learned so much! :)
We are loving the idea of doing the challenge so we are beginning by being aware of every time we flip a light switch and checking our power usage on our bill to see if we can bring it down. I think we could reduce our use without even really noticing it by doing it gradually. Great idea Doug!
Nice ! I have an old metal ice box as well - the man that sold it to us said ''You do know it isn't electric right ?'' lol Honestly it isn't a lot of work and it also cuts back on wasted food =)
Cool I never seen an icebox... I'm a history geek freak. Love learning about how things were done before our modern world
That icebox is a sure beauty, luv it
Nice :) We had one when I was a little kid, (many years ago). The ice went in the left side and the food went in on the right side. Worked fine. I'd like one now with the horribly high electric bills!
Your beard is awesome, sir. Keep up the great work!
I had an idea. In the winter, instead of cutting ice from the pond, if you had pans of water in the ice house, you could make stackable blocks of ice that will be made right where it is stored. I had another idea for a wintertime ice box, which would be a cabinet built around the inside of a small window. If you insulate the cabinet and make it airtight, you could turn a window/cabinet into a frige or freezer. These are just untested ideas.
This is genius! As soon as Doug said, "I'm gonna saw ice from the pond" I visualized this grueling task, bent over for hours reaching down into the pond. And then also, taking away natural resources from the animals who live in it or depend on it. When you make your own using captured rain water in a bucket you don't have to saw all day and the pond creatures keep their pond.
Just spent several hours watching your videos! You all are awesome and very inspiring!
That's great. It's a good size. I have one from the early 1900's that is smaller than that. It takes up half the size. You put the ice on the top and the refrigerator is below. It works great and the drip tray is still on the bottom of course. I love mine. I found it about nine years ago and was in heaven to have the find. Enjoy. I'm also still planning on the ice house. Right now the propane freezer is the ticket.
I was just about to suggest building an old Amish ice hut!! Seen some on UA-cam and if you insulate it well very the ice will last all for a couple years. Just have to add a few blocks as needed.
It was great as the inside the hut was the freezer and they put a fridge through the back wall and cut a hole in it to allow the cold in and it kept the fridge stuff at proper temp. Best fridge freezer combo I have ever seen and zero electricity used!!! 👍
You oughta put up a link to that video if you can. I’d like to see that 👍
Just keep going on and thank you for such great teachings! God bless you both! Karen from Puerto Rico
Hi, I ran across 1 of your comments on an Alex Jones video..I love, love, love the idea of living off the grid..I am from a very small town in Ky. and I am very country..lol
We raise a garden every year and save our own seeds but we are still on the grid..Hopefully I can learn some good tips from you guys and finally live my dream..Thanks!
Thanks for the great phone visit. Your icebox looks awesome. Definitely something I will consider.
I wish my grandma was alive to watch this video. She'd have gotten such a kick out of it. She was definitely a homesteader/farmer with a rich history. Always attended the Brownsville, Oregon Pioneer Picnic, as it was her home for many years until she married and starting farming N.of Keizer. They also planted strawberries all over the central Willamette Valley for other farmers.
Thank you for showing how you live without electricity. This is fascinating and wonderful. Keep doing the great work!
Doug I appreciate your sharing your thoughts and ideas, I like that your ice box doesn't take up alot of space either and still does it job.
You folks are an inspiration, I love these videos!
That icebox is beautiful and in such great condition. Excellent buy 😃🖒❤
Have always loved the old iceboxes...keeping my eyes open!
i inherited one of these and i'm glad i took it even though i had no idea what i was going to do with it. now i use it for dry storage. perfect.
That is Beautiful and what a deal!
Wow, love your old ice box! Very nostalgic!
That looks great a great old school fridge, I'll check that. Thanks for sharing this great video adventure. Have a great day
Fantastic. What a wonderful find and such a great price! Very informative as always.
This is soooo cool! And what a good deal as well. $50!!! WOW!!! Great buy. It's amazing how well things were made way back when, not like our "throw away" society now. Loved this. Thanks so much. Love and hugs, Lisa

Love this kind of stuff..
Thank you!! showing an icebox to the world.
That is so cool (literally!). Reminds me of my Nanny's house, great find!
You & Stacy always amaze me. I think your ice box is beautiful, plus it serves your purpose too. I would love to have one of those! It looks like brand new!!!
Good job!!!!! I love it!!
Nice to see how you do homestead and are trying to live the real deal. Nice find!
really good deal on ice box,my grandmother's was on the back porch, and the iceman delivered the ice, always had a piece for the kids, love it
Wow, awesome ice box. I remember the old ice box we used when we lived in g-pa's old house in Wagoner. Had iced delivered.
This is what our Amish do. It's a great way to save $, help the environment and learn to be appreciative of life. And, our Amish farmers have a gigantic ice house for storing their produce they sell.
That is really cool.....Get it? Cool? I really like it. Really awesome you found this antique in such good shape. Love it!!
I renember reading the little house on the prairie series with my son when he was very young. Thats where I learned about cutting ice blocks and storing them in sawdust. Love knowing these things. You never know whats going to happen in this crazy world, its good to be prepared.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Old iceboxes are awesome. I'm really looking forward to watching the icehouse video.
What a beautiful piece!
cool find!, when I was a young boy, my neighbor was an old man that had an ice box made of wood, he used oil lamps like you folks, had a wood and coal stove for heat and a hand water pump on his sink. He grew about a 1/2 acre garden, raised chickens and the whole shot!
LOVE IT!!! and wow, fifty bucks!!! Seems GOD wanted you to get it! This may be a neat idea for us, but I seriously doubt I will find one that inexpensive! lol, thanks for sharing
yes, I saw theirs too! super neat!! thanks again.
love it. what a great piece of appliance/furniture. the latches seem to be really cool in how the lock. 50 bucks you got a steal.
Oh wow I saw this thumbnail and I never would have thought that this was Doug 7 years ago. Man your healthy diet has really leaned you up lol.
Appreciate your sharing this. My family in northern MI has had one very similar since the mid '60s at our hunting camp. The first two priorities in the winter were getting a fire going inside in our fireplace at one end and the cookstove woodburner and cutting ice from the little lake about 100 yds away for the "frig". Thanks Again-
How incredibly interesting and awesome kudos!!
Love that old ice box. Made in my home state!
My grand mother had one of those, there was a ice man that brought blocks of ice every other day,
Very cool, I've been looking for an ice box for our off grid cabin as well but people want the world . $50 was a steal
I have a 1905 oak ice box in my hone right now. I installed a modern refrigeration unit in it. Quite a conversation starter.
I'm 63 now, I remember my father telling me abt the ice man coming around in the cotton mill village before WW2. I think it'd be cheaper using a ice box over a fridge run all month on electricity. I think if a person had a yeti cooler he could keep food cold for around eight dollars a month in ice. They are very efficient.
Yeah I'd rather pay more and my very convenient fridge.
@@capybaraponque611 Yeah , I don't blame you. Power company does need customers like you.
@@kumara5492 I mean, your people still sh!t on the streets, so I don't blame you for not knowing what it's like to live in civilization.
That's cool. Great find.
I always wondered how they worked. Thanks
That is awesomeeee. Thanks for sharing
Love it! I hope it serves you well!
That thing is awesome
You can make a Stove out of some bricks and a Metal sheet and or a Rack very easy to make you can also beat the heat in summer if you get some thick cloth like blankets wet them with water and PUT them up to your windows with NAILS around the windows when the wind blows in the wet blankets CHILL from the wind blowing on them and provide some cooling just remember they are gonna drip quite a lot so you might want to fashion a tray underneath to catch the water!
Pretty lucky to find this. I've been looking for one for literally years.
Nice ice box. Never knew that you can do ice houses....nice! I was looking into root celler options & now can look into ice houses for food storage. Great info as always. Thank you!
Thanks! Isn't laura Ingles Wilder the little girl from the little house on the prairie show? Didn't know thst there was a real person with that name. I'll look for the info.
Jessie Genna if you see this, also look for her book, Little House In The Big Woods. It's about the place they lived before moving to the prairie. I read it as a kid, and was thrilled when we butchered a hog just like they did in the story. We made the best sausage you could ever imagine, and grandma used the lard for her heavenly pie crusts. She made 7 pies a week, and was an expert. I still drool over those memories,& I'll never stop missing them.
Do you have a good cold spring? our neighbors down the road haf one so cold you could keep butter and milk in there, along with water melons. Wgen we lived in the city, the iceman would come along and sell us a 75 lb. block he carried into tge house with tongs. His horse had blinders on so it wouldnt get spooked by the black, brown, or green cars! He'd chip off some ice for us kids as a treat. Im 73 and lived in St. Louis post wwii, ran under a tree wgen it got too hit and drank cold lemonade. A good life fir sure.
I like the old time ice boxes. I will have one of them one of these days. lol.
Thats an awesome icebox!! Its amazing to see how far we have come and at the same time see how dependant people are on technology today and when it goes down they lose there minds...lol.
I respect your hobby or life style (i apologize I haven’t seen any of your videos this is my first). It seems interesting, but i became such a city boy. I don’t even ride horses no more. You have my like mister! Keep the interesting content coming up
I just seen you on Darcizzle fishing channel and had to check out your channel. This is so cool and I really admire your change in lifestyle. It is an admirable way to go about living. You have accomplished a good thing. Blessings to you and family.
The Icebox is a great find!
that is an amazing find! I Check Craigslist all the time looking for one of these. what a awesome addition to your cabin.
that's a great addition to the home, wow! I often dream of an ice house. One day it will happen, hopefully soon. We freeze a lot of harvest from the garden and barn instead of canning, so we have 4 freezers running plus a fridge, Sure would be nice to change that over to one ice house. Cheers!
Very cool icebox! My dad built one for my mom, very similar!!
Absolutely love it
I was raised by an Amish guy. Brings back memories.
Khadijah Brown ... really!?
That is a great find.
wow, terrific find and a great price too!
I'm so excited to see this video I've been following your videos and so curious about the fridge because I heard stacey say she didn't have a freezer. So i searched for this video. to learn! I love Stacey's cooking videos and knowledge about herbalism, diet and nutrition, I'm a nutritionist and will be sending her videos to my clients!
Awesome find...
loved the vid. used it as a tool to teach my mom how my gram grew up. she was telling me she had a refrigerate, before they had power at there house. lol Gram would always say about when the power came though in 1949. =)
Think outside the "box." Love it!
Awesome. Thanks for the video. We're debating what to do about refrigeration at the moment.
Neat ice box .such a good deal
That's a nice fridge/icebox ..
I remember my grandmother.had one of these
If you feed dogs raw food you don't get to see the vet and give up all your money.
They also can live well over 20 years.
Exactly
Hi! You guys are such an inspiration! Just found this channel. I’m a 26 year old single mom, just bought my first camper to live in full time. I want to go completely off grid like you all, slow down and enjoy the day and watch my kids grow. You said you got yours for $50, where did you find it?? I’ve looked into zeels as well, but this is such a great idea. Thank you so much for videoing your life so We can watch, I still get discouraged and so many people say it can’t be done now. I knew this was the wrong way to be living. Completely attached to a community who only sees you as a $. I cannot wait! Thank you so much!!
My grandfather always called them ice box even the new ones they came out with. He was born in 1902
Thats a good buy for sure.
