Definitely agree with the top 4. Hard to separate them and they’ve taken turns being my fave at one time or another. Mick Taylor should get more credit for his contributions .
Everyone makes fun of Satanic Majesties Request but I think because it is not just a Rolling Stones-style album, it actually shows how creative, fun and freaky the band could get. The songs are great in their own way, along with being a concept album to poke at the Beatles. Psychedelia is appreciated!

I agree completely about Exile on Main Street. It exists as a commentary on and deconstruction of the American musical idioms the Stones grew up on. It captures them throwing the histories of country, blues, gospel, and rockabilly into a mud pit and wrestling with them. Toss in an insane quantity of drugs and booze; the result is brilliant and heartbreaking in it's beauty,
An amazing review of the Rolling Stones top 10. Your insight is right on with each album. My tops in order: Let it Bleed / Aftermath / Exile / Beggars Banquet / Sticky Fingers / Some Girls / Buttons / December's Children / Black & Blue / YaYa's Thank you.
Exactly! I knew I loved both albums when I bought them without knowing why. Would have been a hell of a double album. My first stones purchase as a kid was Beggars Banquet and that will always top my list. Just a great band!
I pretty much agree with your choices, certainly, the top 5 are just about cemented as their best recordings. Maybe an honourable mention for 1980's 'Tattoo You', but I've no idea which of those mentioned I'd leave out! Another classic 'Classic Rock' list, keep up the good work!
I have to agree with you Undercover, is their best album after 1970s and Tattoo You album. It's also the last album they made while they where still "young" early 40s to mid 40's for the band members.
Thank you... it's absolutely obvious that you have actually spun this entire catalog countless times in your life. Very refreshing perspective. My list of favorites changes monthly. I'm a deep diving lover of The Stones. My top 3 are Goats Head, Exile, and Emotional Rescue. Subscribing now!
Very well done video. My opinion is 1 Let it Bleed 2 Sticky Fingers 3 Exile on Main St 4 Beggars Banquet 5 Tattoo You 6 It’s Only RnR 7 Some Girls 8 Goats Head Soup 9 Black & Blue 10 Aftermath
To this day, I still am high on the fact that after one listen to Exile the week it came out in the US, I pronounced it the best Stones album, only to find out that on our side of the pond, critics and all my friends shat on it. And I just played it louder and more often. And decades later the place of Exile is not in question. But Beggars is a hard one. It could be number 2 for me. Or 3. or 4. It all depends on the day. Buttons never took for me, nor Undercover. Aftermath could be higher up. Too bad Brian couldn't roll with the punches. He had awesome range musically. I like Satanic Majesties for #10 on my list. The way I see it, the lads were stoned and having some goofy fun and I can easily align myself with that mood. I think people overthink it, taking themselves to seriously. I like artists that can say, "Yeah that's me. And that's me. And this wacky stuff, that's also me, too. All these moods exist in me in harmony. So, get comfortable and why don't we sing this song all together. . . "
Hello from the u.k. there was a flex disc sampler, given away free with our new musical express Magazine. When exile came out bought it, on release, I agree with all your comment!
Very impressive review/breakdown overall. I saw you kinda glossed over Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ off sticky fingers though... Imo one of the greatest intro riffs ever created. And then didn’t even mention Monkey Man on Let it Bleed. I’ll have to check out the Let it Bleed review you did. Sticky fingers, beggars banquet, let it bleed, exile. All take turns being my favorite album. Just depends on the time of year and mood
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' and Monkey Man are two of their best. Stretched out jams with virtuoso killer jazz grooves; the hired guns sure earned their pay here. Wish they cut loose like this more often, cuz very few recordings reach this level of sonic bliss.
Right on... Though like many I am partial to the Mick Taylor years ("Time Wait For No One"!), these are my favorite Stone's albums... Nice to see some love for "Goat's Head Soup", "Black and Blue", and "Undercover" (Spot on reasons!), the last two of which I find myself returning to more than any other Stone's albums for those sweet grooves, no doubt. Thank you, sir.
i read that Ringo suggested “After-English” as the title for the album that became Revolver obviously as a play on After-Math…and I Am Waiting is in my Top 5 fave Stones tunes and i love that you referred to its inclusion in Rushmore.
Great list. For me the albums from 69 up to 72 are "the toppermost of the poppermost" (to quote another classic band). BEGGARS BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS AND EXILE OM MAIN STREET dwarf the rest of their, however, brilliant catalogue.
One of my personal favorites , that NEVER gets mentioned much is "Metamorphosis". It's more of a collection of rarities and jams..but I really enjoy it. "Satanic Majesties" seems to take a lot of shit for some reason and gets knocked down - maybe I'm weird, it's one of my favs too. I always thought the Stones should do a tour called ANYTHING BUT THE HITS"...where they play EXACTLY that...ANYTHING but the hits..
Great stuff Barry. Great to see those 2 very underrated albums Black And Blue and Goat’s Head Soup on your list. Great to hear you mention great songs like Sway and the gorgeous Winter. Exile On Main St. has always been my favourite. Very entertaining and informative video.
For me? Yes on Undercover , Yes on Some Girls, Yes on Beggars Banquet, Yes on Exile on Main Street, Yes on Sticky Fingers, Take all the early records and take the best of the best in Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, then add Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon ( I know it isn't a favorite by many but I loved it), and then take 1/2 of Steel Wheels and 1/2 of Dirty Work and put them together. Round out my list with Emotional Rescue.
Can't argue with your views but I had hoped that Voodoo Lounge would get a mention. Not by any means their best but one my personal favourites. Great video, thank you.
Just wanted to say that this is an excellent video and I'm looking forward to more content like this. I'm not too savvy on the post-'81 albums but I think I can manage my own top 10: 1 - Exile on Main Street (10/10) 2 - Sticky Fingers (10/10) 3 - Let it Bleed (10/10) 4 - Beggar's Banquet (9/10) 5 - Some Girls (9/10) 6 - Aftermath (9/10) 7 - Goats Head Soup (8/10) 8 - Tattoo You (8/10) 9 - Between the Buttons (7/10) 10 - Their Satanic Majesties Request (7/10)
I love the fact that you included Undercover as a personal favorite of yours. That's why I include Sonic Boom and Fly on the Wall on my Kiss and AC/DC lists: personal favorites. Everyone having the same albums on their "best of" lists would be predictable and boring.
Great commentary & explanation for your personal choices. I loved Between the Buttons. Apparently Jagger hated it. Possibly due to Andrew Loog Oldham’s very strong influence on it.
I've watched a few of your videos with interest and I found myself listening to Rolled Gold, which has led me to listen again to the Stones albums on my MP3 player. Sticky Fingers is a great album, but can I give an honourable mention to Blue and Lonesome which proves (as if anyone doubted it) that they are a damn good blues band.
Excellent and insightful commentary and one of Rock music's most iconic bands. I've really enjoyed watching many of your fantastic reviews, excellent work!

Tattoo You was the last great album /tour by the Rolling Stones with Waiting On A Friend, Worried About You, Neighbours, Hang Fire, Slave, Little T&A as well as No Use In Crying. ,
Hello. I just subscribed to your channel. I'll agree with you about Undercover and Black and Blue. Both these albums are overlooked, but like you said, there are all sorts of underrated gems on both these offerings. I'm looking ooking forward to more of your reviews.
My top 10: 1. Exile On Main St. 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Tattoo You 4. Goats Head Soup 5. Let It Bleed 6. Beggars Banquet 7. Out Of Our Heads 8. Black and Blue 9. Emotional Rescue 10. Voodoo Lounge
For me, it's 1 Black & Blue, 2 Satanic Majesties 3 Let It Bleed 4 Beggars, 5 Steel Wheels 6 Sticky Fingers 7 Some Girls 8 Exile 9 It's Only Rock & Roll 10 Goats Head. Enjoyed your choices.
I love Between the Buttons...it's their most English sounding, and top notch pop/rock on the cusp of psychedelia, also Amanda Jones reminds me of the Stones of "72/"73. They seemed to fit right in to the scene, while at the same time experimenting with studio and instrumentation. Jagger has complained about the production, but I think the stereo version is awesome, especially at full blast...
Great selection. The only one missing (but perhaps you excluded live albums from consideration) is Get Yer Yayas Out. Exiles is probably my favorite Stones album too. And I'm glad you included those two crucial early albums with Brian. As I grow old I find I almost prefer the Brian-era Stones to the later version.
“post-prog apocalypse known as punk rock” i’m not sure if this was meant to be derogatory, or just general commentary, owing to the nature of punk rock. But this line made me laugh out loud. You’ve got a great way with words.
Exile's my favorite album ever by anybody. Absolute magic. But I feel the only thing missed here was Side 2 of Tattoo You, which stands with anything the great band ever did. It's special.
1. Sticky Fingers 2. Some Girls 3. Exile on Main Street 4. Let it Bleed 5. Aftermath 6. Beggers Banquet 7. The Rolling Stones Now 8. Tattoo You 9. Between the Buttons.
For those who, like me, find their album output outside of the golden years + "their last great album" Some Girls somewhat spotty, can I recommend the Singles Collection: The London Years, a chronologically ordered compilation of all their early A and B sides, I can't remember if it has the odd album cut here and there. Wonderful compilation. I must delve one day into whether any of the latter day compilations are worth having. Even if you're a fan of some of the pre Beggars' Banquet albums, this compilation is an exhilarating listen hearing all those singles back to back. Tails of a bit by the third CD but worth it for the first two.
Don't know why you didn't include some of the Stones' earlier, blues-influenced albums. The Rolling Stones Now is a classic, and one of my absolute favorites! Also love 12x5 and Out Of Our Heads. Hell, I still get down with December's Children and England's Newest Hitmakers. The Brian Jones years were magical for me! I was just entering adolescence, and music meant everything to me and my friends!
I always enjoy your ranking videos, and this one is another of my favourites. I agree with you on many of the reasons, but I still think that the top two albums for me would be Let It Bleed at number one and Beggar's Banquet at number two. Those two albums were the peak of the Rolling Stones overall career, and after Brian Jones was gone his ingenuity was never replaced. I have loved this band throughout their entire career (even the lousy 1980's shite), but their pinnacle was that period in the late 1960's.
Back again, enjoying your videos immensely.. 10. Bigger Bang 9. Some Girls 8. Their Satanic Majesties Request 7. Goats Head Soup 6. It's Only Rock n Roll 5. Tattoo You 4.5 Aftermath And sorry to be boring 4. Beggars Banquet 3. Sticky Fingers 2. Let it Bleed 1. Exile on Main Street
After doing a deep dive into the Stone's early years, I can say without any hesitation that Brian Jones might just be the most misunderstood and blatantly underrated musician in the history of rock and roll......tragic figure who simply dazzled fellow musicians with his rare talent and vision. 1. Exile On Main Street 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Let It Bleed 4. Beggars Banquet 5. Aftermath 6. Tattoo You 7. Some Girls 8. Emotional Rescue 9. It's Only Rock N Roll 10. Between The Buttons
At 10:58,between the buttons is in my opinion their most underrated albums ever I own both copies of it on cd and VINYL the cd is the u k version and the VINYL is the US version.
My top ten 1. Sticky fingers 2.exile 3.beggers 4.let it bleed 5. Some.girls 6. Between the buttons 7. Aftermath 8. Tattoo you 9. Black and blue 10. Goats soap
Great list and analysis. I would personally bump Undercover (though I agree with you, it is underrated) and Black and Blue from the ranking in favor of Tattoo You, which I'd place at #10, and Satanic Majesty's, at #9.
Here is an interesting list based only on RIAA Certifications: (*Three compilation albums included just to provide some context.) 1. Hot Rocks* (12x Platinum) 2. Some Girls (6x Platinum) 3. Tattoo You (4x Platinum) 3. Forty Licks* (4x Platinum) 5. Sticky Fingers (3x Platinum) 5. Goats Head Soup (3x Platinum) 7. Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)* (2x Platinum) 7. Let It Bleed (2x Platinum) 7. Emotional Rescue (2x Platinum) 7. Steel Wheels (2x Platinum) 7. Voodoo Lounge (2x Platinum) None of their remaining albums (studio, live or compilation) certified double platinum or better.
Barry I am so happy to see that Black And Blue made the cut. I agree with your assessment of the tracks. Hand of Fate has sounded better as the years have passed. Let It Bleed comes very close to Exile for me. A truly great double in your list.
interesting Top10. I would like to mention Bridges To Babylon and Steel Wheels as especially strong albums. Love the 'Just Might Get Juiced' from B.T.B. However the period from '68 to '72 was no doubt the peak of this band's powers.
Yeah....we are going to have to agree to disagree about Undercover. Great video! Here is my Top Ten: 10. Between the Buttons----the Stones copy the Beatles moreso here than on Satanic Majesties. 9. Voodoo Lounge----a little too long, but there's a lot of great stuff here. 8. Black and Blue-----Ronnie Wood makes his entrance. 7. Aftermath------Brian stands out and makes a lot of magic. 6. Tattoo You----even though there's a lot of recycled material, it's the last ESSENTIAL Stones album. 5. Beggars Banquet------the best of the Brian era, even though he's fading fast. 4. Let it Bleed------it sounds like a sexy, demonic novel you can't put down. 3. Sticky Fingers------Mick-the-Taylor brings a new feel and style that worked. 2. Some Girls-------arguably the most concise record the group ever released. 1. Exile on Main Street-------this is 67 minutes and 7 seconds of unfiltered sex, drugs and rock and roll. Honorable mentions: Goats Head Soup, A Bigger Bang, Get Yer Yayas Out
Excellent, thank you! Insightful and informative as always. Quirks of taste (as you say about choosing Undercover) highlight our, often intense, personal relationship with music, and that, for me, makes words like under/overrated redundant.
My top 10: 1. Beggars banquet 2. Exile on main street 3. Let it bleed 4. Sticky fingers 5. It's only rock and roll 6. Goats head soup 7. Some girls 8. Black and blue 9. Aftermath 10. Between the buttons
To do this one is really hard. I'll try to list my Top 10 (order on the later half may vary) 1. Exile on Main St. - pure magic! 2. Black and Blue 3. Let it Bleed 4. Sticky Fingers 5. Beggars Banquet 6. Steel Wheels (a bit underrated in their catalog) 7. Some Girls 8. Bridges of Babylon 9. Goat's Head Soup 10. Aftermath
Just discovered your channel last night through your Yes Albums Worst To Best video. Your channel is an instant classic! Love your detailed reviews and insights. I, too, LOVE Undercover and 90125. Based on you saying you were 13 when 90125 was new, I think I’m ten years your junior. Anyway, love that Undercover, Black And Blue and Goats Head Soup are in your Stones top ten! They’d be in mine as well.
It's a good list, all the greatest albums are there. Stones are a difficult band to make a list for. I might have included Emotional Rescue because of the excellent Down In The Hole, featuring some of the best and most bluesy Mick Jagger vocals. And Where The Boys Go with the great Charlie Watts drum fills. Also a shout out for the first album. Friends of mine are always bitching about that basically being an album of covers, and that might be true, but the way they did them, raw and aggressive, must have been a big influence on the harder bands that came after. Funny how you mention all songs from Black and Blue, except Melody, an absolute masterpiece, although you could argue it is basically a Billy Preston song with the Stones in attendance ... You could also do a video of their greatest songs, I'd like to see you try ;) ... Or maybe you already have, I'll take a look ! All the best from Den Haag, Netherlands !
With Aftermath, I noticed Mothers Little Helper sound mix a lot more uneven and heavy with reverb effects compared to the same song on Through The Past Darkly (aka Big Hits 1969) with a much more even mix.
It’s somewhat ironic that (imo) The Stones live recordings have (almost) always sounded kind of hollow, weak, unrehearsed, unmotivated... but having said I believe that “Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out” might just be the greatest live album that I’ve ever heard. I believe that I personally rank it on par with - The Who -Live at Leeds - ABB -Live at Fillmore East - Frampton -Frampton Comes Alive I rank ‘Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out’ Above.. -Hendrix -LIVE at Monterey -Zeppelin -How the West was Won -Deep Purple -Made in Japan I was about 13 (1985) the first time I heard it. I had the cassette and a Walkman and I WORE THAT TAPE OUT. The band was on Absolute 🔥 on this night (or these nights) at MSG in 1969. Mick Taylor I believe really provided a much needed kick in the ass after his live debut (Hyde Park) where the band sounded horrendous. My personal rankings of each of the live tracks from the original album. - #1Midnight Rambler -#2Sympathy for the Devil -#3Street Fightin Man -#4Jumpin Jack Flash The TOP 4 ^^^^^ in my opinion The remaining tracks (on the original GYYYO release) -#5 Live With Me -#6 Stray Cat Blues -#7 Carol -#8 Little Queenie -#9 Love in Vain -#10 Honky Tonk Woman In recent years I’ve discovered a few tracks that were from the same show(s) but left off of the original album and I did not include those. - Satisfaction - Gimme Shelter - Under My Thumb And about 13-14 more.
That's a great effort, because when I tried making the same list, it seemed to be a lot harder and a lot less uniform than I thought it would be. So here's a contrary 10 with an underrated classic from each one: 0 "Tattoo You" (let's not let familiarity makes us contemptuous - there's some thumping great stuff on this) - "Black Limousine" 9 "Get yer Yas-Yas Out" (are we allowed live albums, because if we take this out I have to reveal my love for Emotional Rescue) - "Stray Cat Blues" 8 "A Bigger Bang" (one clanger, much rude fun otherwise) - "Back of My Hand" 7 "Some Girls" - (I loved this album so much I ran 20 red lights in its honour) - "Faraway Eyes" 6 "Beggars Banquet" (I have no idea. I suspect I dont actually like this record. As you said, It's the "little" songs that make it) - "Prodigal Son" 5 "12 x 5" (the early albums are just ferocious. The kind of records they had forgotten how to make in America. However, "under The Boardwalk" might just be the worst Stones record ever) - "Empty Heart" 4 "Exile" (Something everyone likes can't actually be any good, can it? It's greatness as a double album is that most double albums, frankly, would be better single albums, but on EOMS, it's the songs you disregard at first pass, the ones that dont belong that make the ones that belong, belong. My one issue with it is, good as it is, Side 3 is marked dip before the glorious side 4) - "Loving Cup" 3 "The Rolling Stones" (an album that did everything the Stones could do before they had done anything.) - "Carol" (but there's nothing underrated here, its all great and etched in the minds of any half knowing classic rock fan) 2 "Sticky Fingers" - (why summarise the dichotomous nature of existence over two sprawling albums when one will do?) - "Moonlight Mile" (its the rockers and country tunes that get the attention on this one, but gee, this song would make any band's reputation) 1 "Let It Bleed" - (the album that doesn't always give us what we want but instead we get what we need.) - what I really want to know is why are the songs in the wrong order on the back sleeve? Top work, sir!
The most remarkable thing is that the Strolling Bones managed to survive the depths of decadent lifestyles, frittering away of all the blessings of life, and still make great-sounding music for 5 decades or more. A song at the end of an album about salvation, amidst the grossest derelictions and blasphemies, does not salvation make.
Well, I have to say that attacking this problem from the bottom up is probably the very wrong way to go. Because that's going to drive away most old fans who disagree with your later choices being in the top ten at all.
One of my favorite Stones tunes is HANG FIRE nobody ever mentions that one and the album in a whole is pretty damn good IMHO of course love what ya do good sir, CHEERZ FROM CINCINNATI OHIO🍻✌🏻

I must agree with you about Hand of Fate from Black and Blue, it's probably my favourite Stones' song and very underrated.
Exile on Main Street has some killer songs that seldom are mentioned. I love the menace of Ventilator Blues and the indifference of Torn and Frayed.

So, get comfortable and why don't we sing this song all together. . . "
Hello from the u.k. there was a flex disc sampler, given away free with our new musical express
Magazine.
When exile came out bought it, on release, I agree with all your comment!
Respect. Wonderful, intelligent critique of Stones Albums.
Excellent, informative and thoughtful review. Much of the Stones best work was done between 1966 and 1981 without any doubt.
Cool, thanks
Much of or all of?
@@ralphaaa80 I don't know many of the albums after 81, so I wouldn't commit myself and say "all".
YES! Too Much Blood is a vastly underrated groove, with a beautiful Police-esque central riff.
Every time I listen to Black n Blue it takes me back to the mid seventies. The whlle mood of the albjm is sleazy 70s...love it
Very impressive review/breakdown overall.
I believe that the Ringoism was After Geography, but after English is just as 😊
@@graemeking7336 you may be right, i’m actually pretty positive you are now that i see it 😆
You popped a few blackheads there grasshopper. After listening to The Stones hits for years Undercover was a pleasant change when I finally heard it.
My top 5
1.Exile on Main Street
2. Let it bleed
3. Sticky fingers
4. Beggars banquet
5. Aftermath
Thanks for mentioning Feel On Baby (Under Cover), their best Reggae.
No problem!
I prefer The Mick Taylor era over all...I love Goats Head Soup and It’s only Rock and Roll...and I like some Ron Wood...
Just wanted to say that this is an excellent video and I'm looking forward to more content like this. I'm not too savvy on the post-'81 albums but I think I can manage my own top 10:
1 - Exile on Main Street (10/10)
2 - Sticky Fingers (10/10)
3 - Let it Bleed (10/10)
4 - Beggar's Banquet (9/10)
5 - Some Girls (9/10)
6 - Aftermath (9/10)
7 - Goats Head Soup (8/10)
8 - Tattoo You (8/10)
9 - Between the Buttons (7/10)
10 - Their Satanic Majesties Request (7/10)
Thanks... do check out my other videos
Great ranking! Very close to how I would do it.👍
I,m a stones fan.1 exile on main street.2 sticky fingers 3 let it bleed.Enjoyed your comments take care.
So thrilled Between The Buttons got a mention. Your top four are my top four too .... only in a different order.
Now we all gotta go back and listen to every single Stones album a couple of times to see if we agree 100% or not. :)
I love Buttons, too. Played it a thousand times when it came out. First thing I thought was "Weird cover!" Lol.
Awesome, I was pleasantly surprised love undercover.
Great video. Great topic and thank you. My to 3 or 4 are in order: Let it Bleed / Beggars Banquet / Aftermath / Sticky Fingers.
Excellent and insightful commentary and one of Rock music's most iconic bands. I've really enjoyed watching many of your fantastic reviews, excellent work!
Thanks
Very interesting take on some classic Stones albums, thanks!
1.Sticky Fingers 2.Let It Bleed 3.Beggar's Banquet 4.Stripped 5.It's Only Rock'n'Roll 6.Exile On Main St. 7.Dirty Work 8.Goat's Head Soup 9.Some Girls 10.Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out
Definitely one of the best top tend I've seen on Stones included most of the ones I'd choose which is unusual.Great video.
Hi Barry. Another great video. Very difficult to pick my top 10. I have been a fan since 1964.
My top 10:
1. Exile On Main St.
2. Sticky Fingers
3. Tattoo You
4. Goats Head Soup
5. Let It Bleed
6. Beggars Banquet
7. Out Of Our Heads
8. Black and Blue
9. Emotional Rescue
10. Voodoo Lounge
Great 10. My favorite band of all time.
For me, it's 1 Black & Blue, 2 Satanic Majesties 3 Let It Bleed 4 Beggars, 5 Steel Wheels 6 Sticky Fingers 7 Some Girls 8 Exile 9 It's Only Rock & Roll 10 Goats Head. Enjoyed your choices.
My top three are three in a row1 ) Satanic Majesties Request 2 ) Beggars Banquet 3 ) Let it Bleed .
On the lp Emotional Rescue the song Where the boys go Jagger sounds super British .
"12 X 5" for me. Thanks, Classic Album Review
I love that you included between the buttons I love how British it is
The most insightful top ten I've ever heard.
Thank you for watching... I might do a ranking of all their albums in the near future.
1. Sticky Fingers
2. Some Girls
3. Exile on Main Street
4. Let it Bleed
5. Aftermath
6. Beggers Banquet
7. The Rolling Stones Now
8. Tattoo You
9. Between the Buttons.
My top 5
01_Exile on Main St.
02_Sticky Fingers
03_Let It Bleed
04_Beggars Banquet
05_It's Only Rock'n'Roll
Undercover is one of my favs also. Great guitar work to imo.
I've got that, I agree. Some interesting songs on there like 'We love you.'
Yay another Undercover fan, love the " put her head in the refrigerator" line ... brilliant.
"Oh no, don't saw off me leg......don't saw off me arm."
10. Bigger Bang
9. Some Girls
8. Their Satanic Majesties Request
7. Goats Head Soup
6. It's Only Rock n Roll
5. Tattoo You
4.5 Aftermath
And sorry to be boring
4. Beggars Banquet
3. Sticky Fingers
2. Let it Bleed
1. Exile on Main Street
Thanks
After doing a deep dive into the Stone's early years, I can say without any hesitation that Brian Jones might just be the most misunderstood and blatantly underrated musician in the history of rock and roll......tragic figure who simply dazzled fellow musicians with his rare talent and vision. 1. Exile On Main Street 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Let It Bleed 4. Beggars Banquet 5. Aftermath 6. Tattoo You 7. Some Girls 8. Emotional Rescue 9. It's Only Rock N Roll 10. Between The Buttons
My top 4 is identical to yours and we have a total of 6 albums in common, I also include Undercover, Goat's Head Soup and Out of Our Heads.
Great show exile on Main street is the stones Masterpiece 🎸☮️
I love "HAND OF FATE" as well. Fantastic guitar solo.
Hand of fate belongs in top ten Stones songs of all time!
An Excellent Song!
wayne perkins🎸
It's hard to do a top ten Stones albums. This is a good list. I would have swapped "Undercover" for "It's Only Rock and Roll".
At 10:58,between the buttons is in my opinion their most underrated albums ever I own both copies of it on cd and VINYL the cd is the u k version and the VINYL is the US version.
My top ten
1. Sticky fingers
2.exile
3.beggers
4.let it bleed
5. Some.girls
6. Between the buttons
7. Aftermath
8. Tattoo you
9. Black and blue
10. Goats soap
Yes GHS is very underrated #1 in my book.
Great list and analysis. I would personally bump Undercover (though I agree with you, it is underrated) and Black and Blue from the ranking in favor of Tattoo You, which I'd place at #10, and Satanic Majesty's, at #9.
Here is an interesting list based only on RIAA Certifications:
(*Three compilation albums included just to provide some context.)
1. Hot Rocks* (12x Platinum)
2. Some Girls (6x Platinum)
3. Tattoo You (4x Platinum)
3. Forty Licks* (4x Platinum)
5. Sticky Fingers (3x Platinum)
5. Goats Head Soup (3x Platinum)
7. Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)* (2x Platinum)
7. Let It Bleed (2x Platinum)
7. Emotional Rescue (2x Platinum)
7. Steel Wheels (2x Platinum)
7. Voodoo Lounge (2x Platinum)
None of their remaining albums (studio, live or compilation) certified double platinum or better.
Barry I am so happy to see that Black And Blue made the cut. I agree with your assessment of the tracks. Hand of Fate has sounded better as the years have passed. Let It Bleed comes very close to Exile for me. A truly great double in your list.
I really like your ranking, your discussions on the records are really competent, congratulations
Glad you like them!
Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street are the best four albums released by any band
You might be right about that, Cuz. Let it Bleed is their best.
I love Crazy Mama.
interesting Top10.
Here is my Top Ten:
My top 10:
1. Beggars banquet
2. Exile on main street
3. Let it bleed
4. Sticky fingers
5. It's only rock and roll
6. Goats head soup
7. Some girls
8. Black and blue
9. Aftermath
10. Between the buttons
The Mick Taylor albums, Black and Blue, Aftermath, Flowers. 2000 Shite Beers from Scones is a good song.
To do this one is really hard. I'll try to list my Top 10 (order on the later half may vary)
1. Exile on Main St. - pure magic!
2. Black and Blue
3. Let it Bleed
4. Sticky Fingers
5. Beggars Banquet
6. Steel Wheels (a bit underrated in their catalog)
7. Some Girls
8. Bridges of Babylon
9. Goat's Head Soup
You're a man of impeccable taste... Thanks for watching
I might do a Stones top ten songs...
You cannot justify excluding: "it's only rick and roll".
With Aftermath, I noticed Mothers Little Helper sound mix a lot more uneven and heavy with reverb effects compared to the same song on Through The Past Darkly (aka Big Hits 1969) with a much more even mix.
It’s somewhat ironic that (imo) The Stones live recordings have (almost) always sounded kind of hollow, weak, unrehearsed, unmotivated... but having said I believe that
“Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out” might just be the greatest live album that I’ve ever heard. I believe that I personally rank it on par with
- The Who -Live at Leeds
- ABB -Live at Fillmore East
- Frampton -Frampton Comes Alive
I rank ‘Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out’ Above..
-Hendrix -LIVE at Monterey
-Zeppelin -How the West was Won
-Deep Purple -Made in Japan
I was about 13 (1985) the first time I heard it.
- #1Midnight Rambler
-#2Sympathy for the Devil
-#3Street Fightin Man
-#4Jumpin Jack Flash
The TOP 4 ^^^^^ in my opinion
The remaining tracks (on the original GYYYO release)
-#5 Live With Me
-#6 Stray Cat Blues
-#7 Carol
-#8 Little Queenie
-#9 Love in Vain
-#10 Honky Tonk Woman
In recent years I’ve discovered a few tracks that were from the same show(s) but left off of the original album and I did not include those.
- Satisfaction
- Gimme Shelter
- Under My Thumb
And about 13-14 more.
That's a great effort, because when I tried making the same list, it seemed to be a lot harder and a lot less uniform than I thought it would be. So here's a contrary 10 with an underrated classic from each one:
0 "Tattoo You" (let's not let familiarity makes us contemptuous - there's some thumping great stuff on this) - "Black Limousine"
9 "Get yer Yas-Yas Out" (are we allowed live albums, because if we take this out I have to reveal my love for Emotional Rescue) - "Stray Cat Blues"
8 "A Bigger Bang" (one clanger, much rude fun otherwise) - "Back of My Hand"
7 "Some Girls" - (I loved this album so much I ran 20 red lights in its honour) - "Faraway Eyes"
6 "Beggars Banquet" (I have no idea. I suspect I dont actually like this record. As you said, It's the "little" songs that make it) - "Prodigal Son"
5 "12 x 5" (the early albums are just ferocious. The kind of records they had forgotten how to make in America. However, "under The Boardwalk" might just be the worst Stones record ever) - "Empty Heart"
4 "Exile" (Something everyone likes can't actually be any good, can it? It's greatness as a double album is that most double albums, frankly, would be better single albums, but on EOMS, it's the songs you disregard at first pass, the ones that dont belong that make the ones that belong, belong. My one issue with it is, good as it is, Side 3 is marked dip before the glorious side 4) - "Loving Cup"
3 "The Rolling Stones" (an album that did everything the Stones could do before they had done anything.) - "Carol" (but there's nothing underrated here, its all great and etched in the minds of any half knowing classic rock fan)
2 "Sticky Fingers" - (why summarise the dichotomous nature of existence over two sprawling albums when one will do?) - "Moonlight Mile" (its the rockers and country tunes that get the attention on this one, but gee, this song would make any band's reputation)
1 "Let It Bleed" - (the album that doesn't always give us what we want but instead we get what we need.) - what I really want to know is why are the songs in the wrong order on the back sleeve?
Top work, sir!
Excellent
Undercover is an AWESOME ALBUM.
I love it, but I realise that I'm probably in the minority
The most remarkable thing is that the Strolling Bones managed to survive the depths of decadent lifestyles, frittering away of all the blessings of life, and still make great-sounding music for 5 decades or more. A song at the end of an album about salvation, amidst the grossest derelictions and blasphemies, does not salvation make.
Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, and Exile. How can you beat those three. Nice review.
EXILE....wake up people it's great record....
Well, I have to say that attacking this problem from the bottom up is probably the very wrong way to go. Because that's going to drive away most old fans who disagree with your later choices being in the top ten at all.
Beggars, let it bleed, some girls but they all have good song's on them, Hot stuff.
One of my favorite Stones tunes is HANG FIRE nobody ever mentions that one and the album in a whole is pretty damn good IMHO of course love what ya do good sir, CHEERZ FROM CINCINNATI OHIO🍻✌🏻
my fav Stones album is TATTOO YOU
Sure it is
