Rattlesnake Island Marsh - Matanzas Inlet, Saint Augustine, Florida - Saltwater Kayak Fishing!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2020
- Today we’re going on a field trip, this time to the Rattlesnake Island Marsh just west of the Matanzas inlet in Saint Augustine, Florida to do a little saltwater kayak fishing. We’ll park on Rattlesnake Island and launch by squeezing through a hole in the sea wall. Is there any other way to kayak fish the saltwater marsh like a local for redfish?
This marsh is about 45 minutes north of my home marsh in Ormond Beach, Florida. It's just north of Bing's Landing. The water is crystal clear, and the marsh is beautiful and teeming with wildlife! Just north of the launch point is Fort Matanzas, which is a popular spot to tour when you visit. Be careful of the current in the inlet! It’s deep and strong. By launching on the west side of Rattlesnake Island we’ll avoid the long pedal around the Fort and those dangerous currents. Of course, the recreational boat traffic is still a challenge so be on the lookout as you cross the intercostal waterway into the marsh entrance.
Let’s go see what we can catch!

Good job with that big fish
Thanks.
Been all around Florida and that’s one of my favorite areas!! Nice red!
Awesome! Thanks Mike. I enjoyed that area too and am definitely going back!
Nice redfish boss. Love all the camera angles in your videos. The dynamic shots add to the overall product you produce. Love the entertainment value of your content. Thanks for sharing your story with us.
Thanks HA, I appreciate it! It would have been better if my back camera and audio didn't drop out at that crucial moment...but hearing your kind words gets me over it and onto my next adventure!
Man that looks awesome!!
Thanks!
Great video, this is about an hour from me so I need to give it a shot.
Hi Travis. Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's a good place to fish, enjoy!
Another great video Ron. Makes me sad I can't get out there as often as I like, thank you fr being my "surrogate"!! And I completely agree with Fran Ra, best on UA-cam, and I watch a bunch of fishing guys on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!!!
Thanks Skip! Your words are too kind but please know they are appreciated. Thanks for the encouragement.
Awesome shots. That area is one of my favorite places on earth. My family has a place on Anastasia island. Been going there since I’m a kid. Try the inlets by Vilano and Ponte Vedra beach.
Very cool, thanks for the tip and for watching and commenting!
Great video! Love your stuff!
Thanks Josh! I appreciate you watching, subscribing, and commenting!
Congrats on 1,000 subscribers. Nice vid👍
Thanks...and thanks for being a loyal subscriber! Glad you liked this video!
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Ron you do a great job. You teach and explain things as you fish. Your channel will be growing.
Thank you for watching, commenting, subscribing, and for your kind words and prediction....I hope you're right but either way I'm having fun and I'm happy to share..
Great video, I’ve applied some of your ideas and suggestions from previous videos in SW Florida and have been VERY successful, keep up the good work. Thanks again.
Hi @Deadmahi...that's great to hear! Congrats on being "very" successful. Thanks for watching and being a subscriber!
Awesome content. Subscribed and thank you, sir.
Awesome, thank you for watching, subscribing, and commenting! And thank you for your kind words. Welcome aboard!
Love it down there, nice vid 👌
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Another great video Ron. I really enjoy your drone shots. That was a beautiful red fish. What I do not envy is your 95 degree sunny day and fishing. I'll take the Minnesota weather but looking forward to heading to Florida in December. See you on the marsh then.
Thanks Wetz for your kind words! I don't mind the heat, but I know what you mean....of course I grew up in the north east and midwest and the cold and snow, to me, is worse :). But hey, I'm happy that some people feel the other way....otherwise Florida would look like NYC!
I love fishing rattle snake island! Great spot for flounder from the shore
Hi Jordan. That's great to hear....I'll have to bounce some soft plastics against the shoreline next time!
Absolutely! I have best results on the left side (opposite side from the houses)
Awesome video as always. I’m heading up there in September to fish. I was at Tomoka state park this weekend and swore I saw some of your spots when I was running around that area.
Thank you for watching! Glad you were around my neck of the woods. I hope you caught some while you were up here! Honestly, I haven't been inside the state park there yet...one of these days.
Great video
Thanks Randall. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Hell yea brother! Ill have to try this spot out! Lemme know next time youre around the jax area lets wet some lines! I just got. A pedal kayak myself and could use some pointers!
Sounds good.
Great job hadn't seen your videos in a while that hadn't been showing up in my UA-cam timeline this one popped up really enjoyed it. that was some awesome drone footage look like a beautiful place to fish
Welcome back David! Glad you enjoyed this one!. If you tap that bell Icon next to the subscribe button and you'll be notified whenever I post new content :)!
@@KayakFishingAddict The only reason I don't use the bell icon is when I'm asleep at night I get notifications that wake me up but we'll be checking your videos out thanks have a good day
David Crowson Yeah, that can be annoying!Hopefully they’ll fix that one day!
Cool due. Nice personality. I'll fish with you.
Thanks Bill!
Great job to catch anything in that heat! I'm shocked you didnt catch poached fish on a platter😉😂 with that kind of heat.
LOL...it was roasting!
Great video Ron! I live in the st Augustine area and would love to get out and fish with you one day! Let me know if you’re available any time soon!
Hi Tyler. Thanks for the offer. I'd love to explore more of the St Augustine area marshes. Perhaps we'll be able to cross paths one day when this pandemic is a thing of the past.
Been there multiple times but never fished there! Will do soon 😄
You'll enjoy it!
What would you say is the best bait for that area?
@@meghanlee9246 Paddle tails do well in this entire area, they're likely the best. Especially the Z-man ones I use. See gear.KayakFishingAddict.com in the bait category for the ones I use.
Okay thank you!!!
@@meghanlee9246 anytime
I honestly don't like fishing anywhere around St. Augustine, it's just so hard to catch a decent fish there. On the other hand....the Indian river and ponce inlet areas are A++++ check it out some time if you haven't already. BUT nothing is better than the gulf coast...any day I'd rather fish the gulf. Great video man, found you from a friend who shared your video on Facebook 🙂🙂🙂🙂 (Mike)
Thanks for watching, subscribing, and commenting! I'm glad you found my channel. I've got a mosquito lagoon/Indian river video up already. It's funny how the two sides of FL are different when it comes to fishing! Even Northeast and Southeast FL have their differences too! Tight lines.
your vids are awesome man. I live in orlando now so Ive been exploring new smyrna, but im from st aug and seeing those marshes make me miss it. have u tried north a little bit like Vilano? more great spots up there too...casa cola creek used to be my spot a few years ago.
Hi JT. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the vids. I haven't been to Vilano or Casa Cola Creek but you've just successfully added them to my list :)!
Beautiful fish! Love your channel. Have you tried fishing Princess Place Preserve leading out behind Marineland?
Hi Joshua. Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing. Princess Place Preserve is on my TODO list....I haven't been there yet.
@@KayakFishingAddict Can't wait for the videos! I've been dying to scout it out but still in kayak research phase. Finding your channel is priceless! I'm getting an education.
Would be nice to know what artificial lure your using and what pd tess line. Beautiful red though
Thanks. Good point. During this video I was using a DOA Figi Chix paddle tail. You can see my gear at gear.KayakFishingAddict.com
New Subscriber! Fish ON! 😂 For the fish you keep, do you keep your fish on a stringer or in your cooler?
Hi Tramaine. Welcome to the channel! Thanks for watching and subscribing. I keep fish in the cooler behind my seat. Why don't I use a stringer? Just think about it...to catch fish, we put bait on a string and pull it through the water....if I put bigger bait on a string (the fish I catch) and pull it through the water, I could catch bigger things like dolphin or gators, and I'm not fishing for those :).
How do you know where to cast? It all looks so good
I know right! I try to throw at structure, pinch points, and the tips of islands. I think to myself, if I was playing hide and seek with bait fish, where would I hide. And then I make a cast.
Hey what is the drone you use for your videos? I just got my 2021 outback and I am looking for a good drone to follow me as well? Your videos are top notch.
Hi Mark. Nice yak! And thanks for your ind words. I have the v1 Mavic Mini. BTW, all of the gear I use and recommendations are at gear.KayakFishingAddict.com including my drone.
I just got my PDL120 and I’m planning on going out to Matanzas soon…..how far of a pedal south is it from your launch point into the marsh?
Congrats on the new boat! I haven’t been there in some time but if they haven’t fixed the sea wall you can launch on the west side of the island and shoot straight across. If they’ve blocked launching on the west side and you can only launch on the east side then it’s quite a long way to pedal around the fort. You also have to be very careful since the current from the inlet itself will affect your path that route.
@@KayakFishingAddict I’m a Volusia county local so I also plan on hitting up the Ormond beach marsh. Maybe I’ll see ya there! My wife and I frequently go out on the skinny water in Bethune Beach near JB’s fish camp….the mangrove system there is amazing!
@@reefermadniss9453 I haven't been down there yet. It's in a no fly zone for drones and I usually like to film with a drone too. I'll have to try it out one day though.
Do you normally fish out there in the evening or morning ?
Hi William. I don't normally fish Rattlesnake Island at all, this was my first time. That said, I typically fish the afternoon hours. I tend to let the tide dictate when I go out if I have the choice but sometimes I just fish when I have the time.
Could you get back in that marsh on a SeaDoo or is it too shallow?
I'm not sure how much depth you need but if it 18" is safe then you should be fine.
@@KayakFishingAddict Should be able to idle around with that. Moving to the are in 6 months, can’t wait to explore out there.
What does "preparing him on the side of the boat" mean? You filleted the fish right there? Also my wife and mis-timed a ride on the inlet side when we were newbie kayakers and painfully know about those dangerous currents.
☹️
Hi Wally. Thanks for your comments and for watching. That's a phrase I chose to use to more respectfully say that he was bleeding out. I fillet fish when I'm back at the truck. I'm super glad that you survived your ordeal with the current! Essentially the east side of the island is a funnel to the open ocean and there's lot's of underwater structure that cause the currents to move in a variety of directions.
