@@jamesmarshall6619 Exactly this. The Academy should pay more attention to good acting in genre movies, and not just dismiss them as 'good for the genre.' A few examples from Horror in the last 10 or so years include (in my opinion): Toni Colette for Hereditary, John Krasinkski/Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place, John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane, Bill Skaarsgard in IT, Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Mia Goth in the X series, Ralph Fiennes in The Menu, Thomasin McKenzie in Last Night in Soho, Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out, Carla Gugino in Gerald's Game.
100% agree. She was sensational. But I would also give Oscar nom for Demi Moore in The Substance and Willa Fitzgerald in Strange Darling. Funny that all of them were from horror films and horror heavy thriller. These three ladies were on 🔥 🔥 🔥

@@07foxmulder Not gonna speak for "them people", but what if... what if following the advice 'they should nom this or that person' would make the Oscars less outdated?) Or in a world where the Oscars do not suck, this person would be nominated. Or, it's just a shorthand for saying 'she was great'. Or, it's actually 2 different groups of people. Naomi Scott gave us one of the greatest horror movie performances of all time and I’m not even exaggerating. She elevated this movie to a few levels above what was called for. And if I’m being honest, those jump scares were highly effective and tasteful in my opinion.
Joker should never have had a sequal. I knew it was coming the way it popped off and I knew it wouldn't live up to the first one. It could only ever disappoint. Like someone explaining a joke right before the punchline. Why can't they just leave good stories alone.
Very satisfying to watch Jeremy and other UA-cam critics become real mainstream critics. Thanks for staying objective and taking over an industry that only knows how to gaslight today - artistic criticism survives through these channels!
I am trying to understand your comment. Which industry are you talking about that does nothing but gas light and that you think Jeremy has taken over said industry? Are you talking about the movie industry or the movie review UA-cam industry?
Wasn't it just. Kind of surprised though that, spoilers, that art didn't go on a murder spree at that party. Wasn't bad or anything by any means I really enjoyed it. Just went in a direction I didn't expect though. Especially at the end. I also don't think jonathans dead tbf. Like he probably is yeah, I don't buy it though tbh.
@@badrpr69 apparently he's doing one more film and keeping it as a quadrilogy. Which would work tbh if done right. Budget was 2 mil so basically fuck all though and has already made well over 30 mil. In pure agreement with your assessment, save one thing. I thought the run-time was more than adequate. It needed to be 2+ hours for us to get to know Skye (Naomi) and see if her predicament would lead to a more positive outcome. Granted, yes - the ending was polarizing, but I did give it credit for defying my expectations! Love your content btw. ;)
Dude it was scary in traditional terms - I can’t really imagine them making it much scarier than they did. A demon fucking with your head and making you see things that aren’t real but are in your head and turn people against you
From a horror fan I think it's a 10/10. I disagree with the taking out the icebox scene. I was so invested I didn't want it to end. Could of tacked on another 40 mins if it kept that same pace. JJ usually rates horrors really low for some reason
@@orange222... a 1 out of 10 is a reach when the acting and the production was great. Objectively this movie is a well crafted film. 10/10 is very generous but 1/10 is crazy
@@andresf1876 the whole icebox scene was very uninspired, I thought. Subjectively, of course. Lots of "crazy person walking towards you, look away, look back, they're in your face" I loved this movie, but there were definitely a few scary scenes that could've held the tension and done something really unsettling, but instead ended with a - granted, really good - jumpscare. Take the icebox scene, the night Jemma slept over, the man in the mirror. They all had me holding my breath, and they built it up well. I personally just feel like they popped the tension in an "easy" and fast way when they could've drawn it out and done something really fun. The "dancing horde" and the initial death scene were exactly what I wanted with all the others, and they prove the director had the potential, and just decided on other ways of handling it.
You know, both Smile movies have great acting and really effective scares. But what really sets them apart for me is how damn mean they are. Just nasty to their characters.

Great movie. Although, the plot with the ER worker wanting to stop her heart and resuscitate her was really good - was a bit bummed when it’s revealed that was all one big hallucination driven by the demon.
It was like that because it's possible to speculate that the demon knew she was a famous pop idol and used more power to infect thousands at one time or even millions of people!
Just saw Smile 2. A solid and enjoyable sequel. Im honestly surprised at how good it was. Definitely exceeded my expectations. My score is a solid 7.5/10. Highly recommend!
Shouldn't have gone to the theaters alone. The movie surprised me pleasantly. I had no expectations. And the movie was a bit slow half way. But after that it picked up pace and did not let up until the end. It was such a trip, watching the protagonist go through the hallucinations. Naomi Scott was great throughout the movie. She was one we could relate to.
Same. I felt the movie for the rest of the day despite watching it at 11:00 AM. Didn't help i watched it in Dolby, where the director knew it would be most effective.
I completely agree! And your the first reviewer I’ve seen that hasn’t completed loved it. I definitely enjoyed it but when i saw all these reviews saying it was better than the first in every way i was like “did i see a different movie than yall?” Still super fun but the ending got so crazy I didn’t know how to feel about it
Exactly. The first one was definitely better. This one just tried to bigger better longer, which for horror movies isn’t the way to go. Waaay to many jumpscares. The movie should be scary. Not the thought of a super loud sound and a jumpcut to a creepy face. Thats lazy as sht.
I didn't like it. I really like the first one. Every critic says jump scares are cheap yet this movie is nothing but jump scares and it's acceptable> The first jump scare really made you think something good was going to happen but then nothing new. Didn't care for all the dancing and singing either. The end effect was pretty good but I've seen it before and then the monster which was used to much better effect in the first movie. Just really disappointed.
Regarding the length - I knew it was just over two hours long because of what my movie ticket said, but I was so immersed that I didn't even notice. Highly effective horror movie - my favorite of the year. I love both Smile movies. Not big on blood and gore - not that this movie had much - but a few solid jump scares and a lot of psychological terror? This movie had it, and I was thoroughly scared.
2:04 That still frame looks IDENTICAL to Charlie Kirk's smile, the polictal commentator dude. gives me the creeps lol. Also this movie was a solid 8/10 horror movie. The ONLY nit pick, was the cheap jump scares with loud, sudden mousic to scare you. The actual demon itself is creep af too. I love that this franchise can keep going, as the demon gets more power. I called it like 20 mins before the movie ends, that she was gonna end up infecting the concert and my gf thought I had already seen it and that;'s how I knew what was gonna happen lol. I wish the actress survived, so she could come back again in the next movie but that is what makes these 2 movies good, all great casts, yet the movies don't need them to be successful
I loved Smile 2. It was maybe a little less brutal than the first one, but the psychological horror elements were cranked waaaaaaaaayy up. I spent a day thinking about this movie and everything that I had witnessed. To me, that's a good movie. I loved this movie just like the first movie. I will wholeheartedly support this series. The pace of the movie, from the very start it jumps right into it and doesn't let go for a moment to let the audience breathe. Especially with help from the score, it sets the tension and dread right when those first notes hit. It's play on trauma and how it affects a person is appreciated because it's done well and it's done right while maintaining the horror of the Smile demon. I would even say melding with it. I.cannot wait for the 3rd movie.

Yo! Experiencing MEAN GIRLS (the musical - the Halloween scene) and JOKER 2 this year. I could easily spot the inspiration and influence. A few examples from Horror in the last 10 or so years include (in my opinion): Toni Colette for Hereditary, John Krasinkski/Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place, John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane, Bill Skaarsgard in IT, Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Mia Goth in the X series, Ralph Fiennes in The Menu, Thomasin McKenzie in Last Night in Soho, Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out, Carla Gugino in Gerald's Game.
She definitely deserves at least some kind of acting award. She was was so good in every scene
Scott deserves an Oscar nomination. That's how tremendous her performance is.
100% agree. She was sensational. But I would also give Oscar nom for Demi Moore in The Substance and Willa Fitzgerald in Strange Darling. Funny that all of them were from horror films and horror heavy thriller. These three ladies were on 🔥 🔥 🔥
The whole movie I was like: if only The Academy respected horror movies, cause Smile 2 would have a shot of winning a few
It’s weird how you people/people like you are the first to say how outdated and pointless the Oscars are but are always the first to say someone should be nominated for one.
I dunno, there are many possibilities I guess.
@@07foxmulder You can hold both opinions.
Naomi Scott gave us one of the greatest horror movie performances of all time and I’m not even exaggerating. She elevated this movie to a few levels above what was called for. And if I’m being honest, those jump scares were highly effective and tasteful in my opinion.
Noami Scott was phenomenal in this. Easily one of my favourite performances of the year.
Damn you jeremy! I don't watch horror movies because of jump scares and you put one in this review!
SURPRISE MF!!
this movie is entirely jump scare interlaced with music videos and dancing. So disappointed after the first smile
A sequel that was actually decent. Take notes, Joker.
Joker should never have had a sequal. I knew it was coming the way it popped off and I knew it wouldn't live up to the first one.
It could only ever disappoint. Like someone explaining a joke right before the punchline.
Why can't they just leave good stories alone.

@@Aikurisu when I made the comment I meant more so that it’s not just picking up where the last film left off and continuing it with Joel, I think it’d be boring and redundant. But we’re given a new character and situation but same stakes
Those jump scares were effective though.
Love your content btw. ;)
Yea, not "scary" in traditional movie terms, but the disturbing imagery and psychological aspect of it is scary alone
JJ usually rates horrors really low for some reason
i agree!
This movie is most certainly Awesome-Tacular
oddly as a horror fan I think it's a 1/10. What is your favorite movies?
@@orange222... a 1 out of 10 is a reach when the acting and the production was great. Objectively this movie is a well crafted film. 10/10 is very generous but 1/10 is crazy
@@andresf1876 the whole icebox scene was very uninspired, I thought. Subjectively, of course. Lots of "crazy person walking towards you, look away, look back, they're in your face"
I loved this movie, but there were definitely a few scary scenes that could've held the tension and done something really unsettling, but instead ended with a - granted, really good - jumpscare.
Thanks Jeremy for never changing
And that is his problem, he should change. Sometimes change can be good, meaning it will make him a better critic. For example, he should review all new release movies, his right wing bias kind of stops him from seeing good movies.

Holy shit earliest I’ve ever been to a Jeremy drop, let’s goooo

*I really enjoyed this sequel. Was expecting something mid, but thought it was good.*
You hid a jump scare in your review .DAMN YOU JAHNS!!!! .lol.
Not the first time
Just saw Smile 2.
That ending gave me the biggest laugh in the cinema in a long time. Bravo movie!
Dan Murrell and Cody Leach were mid on it too
@@orange222...weird, I thought it was way better than the first one and I watched it again before seeing this one
NAOMI SCOTT absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for this! She was LEGIT.
Ok... you scared the literal shit out of me with the jump scare. I just woke up 😂
This movie scared the living shit out of me, so good 🔥
Me too
Regarding the length - I knew it was just over two hours long because of what my movie ticket said, but I was so immersed that I didn't even notice. Highly effective horror movie - my favorite of the year. I love both Smile movies. Not big on blood and gore - not that this movie had much - but a few solid jump scares and a lot of psychological terror? This movie had it, and I was thoroughly scared.
Moral to this story: you better think twice before going to your drug dealer’s house. Don’t do drugs kids. this is what happens.
And yes, this one had me jump out of my seat and I haven't had a movie scare me that much since The Conjuring 2. Definitely give this movie a shot if you are on the fence.
Less brutal I think this one was more brutal than the first 😬 but everyone has their own opinions

this one is just a different version with dancing and singing. The actress was good. Not kidding. Nothing but jump scares the first one had some real terror dread and buildup. Seen all the gore in here twice.

@@orange222... Interesting. But yeah, man. To each their own. Outside of the ending of the first one and Kyle Gallner, I thought it was kind of bland. Especially with help from the score, it sets the tension and dread right when those first notes hit. The car scene when they were doing drugs and arguing had me at the edge of my seatttt and the plot twist of her friend not being there was crazy
Aww man that plot twist was insane. From there on out it got nuts
Yea the plot twist with her and jemma in the car after she kills her mom was insane
Yo! Experiencing MEAN GIRLS (the musical - the Halloween scene) and JOKER 2 this year. I could easily spot the inspiration and influence. I couldn’t help but wonder if this year was the year musicals were making a comeback. Deadpool & Wolverine kind of went there with their opening sequence. Then we have WICKED coming out in a few weeks.
All in all. Watching SMILE 2 last night made me think what if JOKER 2 came out after this movie. Because the treatment for SMILE 2 was very similar to Folie à Deux in alot of ways. I thought it was creative and smart to heal traumatic social themes with a few musical numbers. *Jazz hands

@@SuperExtrovert that was a great scene when they came after her in her apartment but I feel musical numbers just don't fit in most films that aren't musicals. Perhaps it was just the choreography but seems like they did such a good job with the one scene they had more untapped talent than was shown in the dance numbers which were pretty formulaic.
