Growing up we always called them stocking caps, it wasn't until I went to boot camp and someone referred to a beanie, and all I could think of was the hats with a propeller.
Beanie and toboggan are slang names for a knit watch cap. Beanie is used in the north and toboggan is used in the south. However, knit watch cap is a more universal name for this headwear.
A toboggan is a simple sled traditionally used by children. It is also a traditional form of transport used by the Innu and Cree of northern Canada. In modern times, it is used on snow to carry one or more people (often children) down a hill or other slope for recreation. Designs vary from simple, traditional models to modern engineered composites. A toboggan differs from most sleds or sleighs in that it has no runners or skis (or only low ones) on the underside. The bottom of a toboggan rides directly on the snow. Some parks include designated toboggan hills where ordinary sleds are not allowed and which may include toboggan runs similar to bobsleigh courses.[1] Toboggans can vary depending on the climate and geographical region. Such examples are Tangalooma (Australia) where toboggans are made from Masonite boards and used for travelling down steep sand dunes at speeds up to 40 km/h (25 mph).
I definitely like this type of video format. With all the effort you've put into keeping your bees warm and healthy, I sure do hope they survive the winter!
Hello from Indiana. Yes we used to call knitted caps toboggans. I've never heard that style referred to as beanies. That was some eighties collector items. We just call then ski caps now. We have a water source heat pump and have our own well but Electic cost for the last month is $284.
A toboggan is a sled. My usage of gas goes up around 20% in winter but my bill goes up around 400% because they charge more for gas in the winter than the rest of the year.
Your bees look great. I've raised bees for many years and overwintering is always a challenge. I also have never treated my bees with any antibiotics or medications. Its a hard way to go but eventually you get stronger colonies. Never had any diseases. Varrora mites and hive beetles are there but a strong hive cures a lot of problems. Love your show.
Consider a dual fuel genset (gas/propane). You could tie it into your main house propane tank. You will lose 5-10% overall power from gas to propane, but you will not have to haul gas except for emergencies AND in my area in Texas, propane is cheaper. Depending on genset, consumption is about the same.
It depends on how cold it is but we can pay between 150.00 to 250.00 and sometimes up to 300.00. It just depends on the temperatures we are having in Eastern Tennessee.
I live in Santa Catrina Brazil so winter is much warmer. It does get down to the low 40's and upper 30's a few times. Only heat is a wood stove, single pain glass, clay tiles for a roof no insulation. Electric bill converted is about $80 usd.
To calculate the cost of electricity that you consume, you'll need to know what the total kilowattage consumed during the given amount of gasoline. Divide the amount of gallons by the kilowattage used.
In the uk (well the north of England) we often call them bobble hats or Wooly hats (if made from wool that is)! Anyway hope you all had a blessed Christmas and hope you have a Loving, healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year 😊. May 2025 bring you all fun and Adventurous journeys to come 😊.
I grew up calling it a toboggan, but I now call it a knitted hat. (My northern friends pointed out that a toboggan can be a sled, and its easier to compromise with a different slang than to worry about what to call it.)
33:31 in the church. Camera effect or divine light. Slow it down. It is interesting to say the least. Blessings to you guys. Hope your holidays and the new year are full of happiness and love.
We call hats like that in Alabama, toboggans. Our power bill runs around 200 per month. We are all electric with 2400 square foot home and 960 square foot shop.garage. Hope you have a great new year. Love your channel.
In uk petrol £1.35 liter . you had 55gallons -220liters £297 -$238 . not allowed to carry petrol over 20 liters got to have a adr licsence {dangerous / harzardous goods}in approved roadworthy can/tank and tiredup to stop form moving
Current month in the UK we are being charged £263 = 330$ for our electric....and it's not even so cold yet! Mind we do charge our EV and have ASHP heating.
Our elec bill is about $160 - $164 / mo in the winter. We are with a Co-Op Elec Company - so much cheaper than the other company in our area. We do have a lot of outages - so want to put in a solar backup. Or maybe go to solar and have the grid a backup. Not quite sure yet which way would be best. We use propane for heat though.
My natural gas bill can vary dramatically from $75.00 in the summer time to $275.00 in the winter time, but we use gas for heating the house the water, the BBQ and the cloths dryer as well as two fireplaces. My electric use is opposite the gas as it is used a lot in the summertime for air conditioning and can run from $100.00 in the winter to over $200.00 in the summer depending on how hot it gets.
We run a 24k mini split in a 1800sqft home in northern Maine and our bill in December was $459. $160 is a bargain for full house power. We are going off grid this year. Just bought a 13.5k generator and have two eco flow pro’s for 240volts, but will get the EG inverters and batteries so we are totally off grid.
I have missed this kind of video. I’ve been watching y’all since you were in Indonesia. Good job on this video. In Texas, toboggan. Then my husband went into the Air Force, now we call them Bennies.
It is a toboggan and a beanie depending on where you grew up. My dad was military and I grew up between Washington state, Oklahoma California, Florida and Louisiana. I totally understand what people are talking about no matter what they call it. I crochet. To me a toboggan is thicker and sticks up with a pompom on the stop. A beanie is more form fitting without a pompom.
We have gas heat and our combined bill is about $300 a month ( we have a Kia EV9 ) with our electric car. About 240$ of it is the electric side. About ,1100 kWh with 450 of it being the electric car. 1900 sq ft house family of 4 in southern Wisconsin.
My home has forced air heating using natural gas. We can keep it reasonably comfortable in the winter with gas and electric bills under $120 combined. However, living in California we are not subjected to the harsh winters that you probably experience.
I’m 63 from buffalo ny. The land of snow. If you said tobbogan I think of a long sled where 5 or 6 people would fit and we fly down the snow covered hills. Never Heard of the hat.
In Delaware we call them a toboggan a Beanie is a similar thing but you don't fold up the hat, Beanie also could be called a skull cap, my Eletric i 147 a month on the avg.
As far as I know, we called Julie's style toboggan with the ball on top, and beanies didn't have them. But I grew up in Wisconsin, live in Florida, what do I know...😂😅 The bees seem to be wintering well, the boxes ya'll have are helping immensely. Love ya'll ❤️
They used to be called watch caps or commando caps. A character called Bennie in a UK soap opera wore one, so everyone over here just called them Bennie hats. I'm guessing over time this just became beanie.
I am in Indiana and my family always called it a "toboggan", I will be 70 in the new year. But doing research, I have found that the word Toboggan has only been in use since 1929, and was a term used by those who road toboggans in the winter. Interesting it says it was a popular term in South USA. Then I did a little more research and the term "beanie" came into use in the early 1900s as a knitted cover for your "bean", slang for head.
thanks for the update video....where is the "Junk Store"? in Sandpoint? I want some of the blue barrels. I'm still using 5 gallon jugs for my battery charging generator. Thanks
Toboggan is the actual snow sled the hat is a tuque but calling it a tobagganing hat was easier than using both toboggan and tuque. Beenie is also another name for it.
Good morning happy new Year- a beanie has no ball in the center of hat and fits the skull no fold down over ears or forehead - a toboggan can be putted over the ears and extra material on forehead and has a fluffy ball on top of it - she is wearing a toboggan
We pay around $170.00/month year around because we’re on “level billing”. Our home is all electric. We live in Bowling Green, Ky. Interesting info on the bees. I thought a "toboggan" was a sled-type of thing you RIDE... not wear!!
They were considered toboggan hats then it was shortened to just toboggan.
Growing up we always called them stocking caps, it wasn't until I went to boot camp and someone referred to a beanie, and all I could think of was the hats with a propeller.
Here in Canada we use toques to keep our head warm and we use a toboggan to move things around on the snow or slide down Hills

here in Redmond WA our electric bill hits $500/month in the winter for a small house (1000 sq ft) with electric heat
I like the style of this video. We get to tag along as you do all kinds of things.
Do you feed your bees? If so what container do you use? I’ve been using mason jars but I’m considering a one-gallon bucket.

Stay warm. God bless all y’all. ❤🙏
we like the mics and hearing you chat throughout the video
In southeastern Oklahoma most people call them toboggans.
Def, Toboggan:
a long narrow sled used for the sport of coasting downhill over snow or ice. It typically is made of a lightweight board that is curved upward and backward at the front.
Winter bill is between300 and 350. It is going up this January
These I call knitted skull caps with different areas of the world. I assume Toboggan caps could be caps for sledding. Usually, in my area, these are called beanies.

$300-$400 a month in Hawaii but that includes charging our electric car. With Aloha...
Weather is not really cold right now. Becomes a challenge when it gets down to zero or below. How do your bees do when it gets that cold? I'm in Montana.
A toboggan is not needed and rarely seen in the area of Texas where I live. Yall living close to Canada ever heard of a Toque?
That 55 gallons would cost me $258 here in the SF bay area.
Why not get a propane generator with a large external tank. Fill it one time in the fall, good to go all winter.
I always thought you had to have some ventilation for the bees. I know you want to keep the warm but I'm worried that the moisture is going to gather on the top with the bees.
