    Couple reminders- pack it in, pack it out - trash included! No there aren’t garbage trucks in the wilderness! Afton is like backpacking lite since you are never more than a few miles from a road or the parking lot. & I seriously Doubt you carried 100 lbs on your back, this trip.Weigh each item you pack. Typical is 20 lbs for a weekend or up to ONLY 40 for longer, only Plenty of UA-cam channels on backpacking gear and skills- visit a few first and learn and PLEASE don’t potentially burn a hole in that picnic table w/ your chosen stove type. A canister stove is safest. Try backpacking by all means, but read up on it or visit sites/ UA-cam’s of experienced folks, first.

      Congratulations! In 3 and a half years of doing youtube, this is the snootiest comment I've ever received. #1 in no way is Afton state park 'the wilderness'. It's a a few miles from the twin cities, my whole point was they have truck access to the area, so why not have a trash receptacle. It was just something i was pointing out. #2 I guess next time I'll weigh my bag so everyone knows exactly how much I'm carrying. I was probably over a bit, but the other 3500 people who watched probably figured I was exaggerating a bit, and were not so offended. #3 Thanks for your concern for the picnic tables. I have used that burner a hundred times and anyone else who has would tell you, it doesn't burn the table. #4 Watch 'youtube experts'? Please, while some are informative, and I never claim to be one, it's just people enjoying the outdoors. Sorry my camping trip triggered you, in the future maybe just turn off the video if it offends you so much. By the way, I'm going to pin your comment to the top of this video. Thanks for watching!

    As a Midwesterner, I've camped in many of the places you visit. Our state parks are the best!!!

    Some great hikes in that park. Really like camping there on like a Monday or Tuesday night. Completely alone

    I've been gradually getting geared up for short backpacking camps like this one. Afton being only a 45-minute drive from home it would make a great place to start. The only things I still need are a proper tent (a 2-man at least to avoid the cocoon feel) and a sleeping pad I can actually tolerate as a 55 year old arthritic.

    • @stinkleberryfarmer
      @stinkleberryfarmer  Місяць тому

      It's a tough walk up a big hill to get there, but certainly worth it. That tent is tiny, all you can do is sleep in it, but so easy to carry. The inflatable mattress I have is pretty comfortable and compact, my days of sleeping without one are over as well. This was kind of a test run, because I might need to camp like this in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

    Ill be here next weekend! Pretty excited. This will be my first backpacking trip ever. Ive done lots of camping, but never backpack.
    Eventually id like to do a real backpacking trip outside of a campsite, but this seemed like a good place to start!

      You'll love it. I didn't have this in the video, but there is a pump to get water at the top by the campsites, so you don't have to haul a bunch of water. Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!

      This is an awesome place to start! I began my journey here on 4/1/22 at site#21 and it is one of my most valued and cherished moments. The coyotes were ironically insane when I went but they are not to be feared just enjoy their sounds if you hear them!

    Always frustrating when a trash can isn’t nearby. Great little site and cozy tent. Was it hard to breathe overnight? I think I’d get claustrophobic! But it’s a good size for backpacking!

      I was so tired that in the end I slept like a baby. Could be a problem in hot weather though. Thanks so much for watching!

    Nice camp! Cool little tent. Was that a CampPal? I have one of their larger tents I use time to time. Not too pricey and pretty decent quality. Would you ever try "cowboy" camping? Just a bed and the open sky? I'm not sure im man enough for that 😂. Thanks for sharing brother!

    • @stinkleberryfarmer
      @stinkleberryfarmer  Місяць тому +2

      Yeah, a camp pal. Never heard of it, but it had good reviews and a great price, worked out well. No, closest to sleeping under the stars is when I fell asleep in my camp chair until 3 in the morning one time. There may or may not have been beverages involved with that. Thanks so much!

    Wow, no mosquitos in a grassy/wooded area in Minnesota in August; you lucked out! I admire your dedication to pack, hike, set up and tear down for a single night's camp. Have you done multi day backpacking trips before or are you preparing for an upcoming adventure? Happy camping!

    • @stinkleberryfarmer
      @stinkleberryfarmer  Місяць тому +1

      Years ago I did a couple of multi day backpacking trips up in the boundry waters, but not sure I'll be doing that any more. This was a bit of a test run as I may need to use this gear 1 or 2 times coming up on a longer trip. More to come on that in couple of weeks... Thanks so much Peggy!

    you have to earn the Afton backpack sites but always awesome when you do! Site11 is a good one! btw there are 101 steps at the kill bill stairway.

    Afton was the first park I started backpacking in. Very memorable. I don't mind the firewood cutting and convenience of water and bathrooms near by. I feel spoil with Afton. There are other backpacking sites that don't even provide a saw and firewood to cut.

      Twice, once in winter, once in summer. Both times at the same cabin, its what made me finally get a camping backpack. I have videos on both, winter solstice 2, and summer solstice. Thanks for watching!

    Man that was some BS about the firewood. Eight bucks plus they make people do all their own labor. Not a huge plus for that park. Really makes a person wanna break the rules and bring in their own firewood. Hey but at least the park provided lots and lots of trash. 😂

    • @feline-n6b
      @feline-n6b Місяць тому

      But the wood you have to cut is up in the campground..plus if you don’t like that there are many other parks to choose from

    • @MFitz12
      @MFitz12 Місяць тому +1

      I walked through the campground last year on a Sunday afternoon when there were zero campers. There was leftover firewood in almost every campsite, already cut and paid for.

    • @stinkleberryfarmer
      @stinkleberryfarmer  Місяць тому +1

      I've always felt the Minnesota DNR charges a bit too much for firewood, but sometimes you've got no choice. The trash is annoying, sometimes I pick it up, sometimes not. Thanks Island!

    • @cipher2
      @cipher2 Місяць тому +1

      The firewood here can be a pain but what I do is just donate $10 when I register the site and then I bring a silky saw and rucksack the wood back to my site. It took some figuring out but ended up be a really cool and rewarding system!

    • @IslandLakeAdventures
      @IslandLakeAdventures Місяць тому +1

      @@feline-n6b Yeah it's best to choose a different park where the firewood's pre-cut so little Timmy doesn't saw his foot off with that big ass saw.
