  • Two test for the presence of water
    Water will turn:
White anhydrous copper (II) sulfate blue
Blue cobalt (II) chloride paper turn pink in water.
Both compounds add on water of crystallization, giving the colour change. To reverse, just heat!
Hydrated means it has water molecules built into its structure.
Anhydrous means no water is present.
Heat the hydrated copper (II) sulfate powder.
The blue crystals of hydrated copper (II) sulfate turn to a white powder on heating.
The reaction is easy to reverse: add water! The anhydrous copper (II) sulfate gets hot and turns blue.
