Ponds do better at a low point so rain runoff refills it. Dig down to the clay layer so you don’t lose the water. If you put in a well, it will help replenish the pond so it stays fresh. Just some advice because of my past mistakes. :)

Digging down to the clay layer is very important if you don’t you are waisting time. You will be revisiting it soon. Water finds the path of least resistance and the dirt sitting on top of the grass is the path!

Hey Crokers, Make sure you find clay so it will hold water. I just know from watching Homestead Rescue, that if it is not clay it will all drain out. It would be a shame to see that.

Best thing to do, is to get y’all a disk harrow or something like that to break up all the soil, before you just digging. Or, see about getting a bucket with ripper teeth. Just a suggestion

When we dug our pond years ago we didn’t get it as deep as we wanted because we hit a spring in the bottom.. we got a foot or so of water in it overnight.. it gets really low in hot, hot summer, but never goes dry .. it’s probably 20 years since it was dug..
It started getting soft and muddy before we hit the spring.. and it was summer when we dug it..

It would be so cool to have a backhoe. Property has beauty everywhere. Your giving the property a second life. It would be awesome to get some history as to what uses the property had over the years. Oil is one guess. A bridge and shop was one good thing that is amazing. It is nice that your getting the shop, fencing for animals, barn, clearing and other things completed before you focus on home building. I know Jared will make himself a nice little homestead. I hope Jared decides to let you all take a goat and name them. Its Saturday and 14 degrees and 45mph winds and white out Blizzard conditions here in coastal Groton/New London, Connecticut. Be safe/Be warm. Blessings beautiful Crocker family.

Check the elevation around your land via a map. Then build a small 2 maybe 3 ft damn at the lowest part to keep water in your stream and maybe keep the pond moving.... you could use the stream for a bit of free energy

Can you get some red clay delivered to firm up the pond and maybe for base to Jared's house? He may have something else in mind to level up the site. Looked like that soil might let the water through. In the long run, the clay would probably be worth it. I liked the idea others had to make an island for ducks, geese to nest. That would be great. What do you all think of all the baby goats at Jared's place? They are cuteness overload.
