  • Over the centuries the land of England had changed dramatically. The arrival of the Great heathen army in the year 865 would transform the culture and way of life in the British Isles, especially in the North of England. The Vikings had come from the icy north on their dragon headed longboats seeking plunder, treasure and glory. For over a century the Vikings would raid in England, having heard tales of the legendary sons of Ragnar and how they had became Kings in foreign lands. After the death of the Ragnarssons, the Danelaw had been established; it was a land north of Wessex where the Norsemen could worship their Pagan Gods in peace with the culture being a mixture of Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon.
Alfred the Great had laid the blueprint for his descendants to become the Kings of all England, and his Grandson Aethelstan would unite the land in the year 927. Nearly a century later in the year 1002 Aethelred the Unready was now the King of the English, and the Norse influence of the Danelaw was still as strong as ever, in addition, just like in the times of Alfred, the Viking Raids on England were still numerous.
The current King of England, King Aethelred would do something no other King of the English had done before. Due to a perceived threat on his life, he would order a mass killing of all Danes in England; this would take place on the 13th of November in the year 1002. His armoured knights would leave his hall and would round up soldiers, they then rode into the heart of the Danelaw and began slaughtering men, women and children in the name of their King. The bloodshed caused was devastating, many innocent settlers and farmers were slain for the sins of their ancestors and fellow Norsemen. A Royal Charter reflects the events that transpired, in the words of King Aethelred this is what he told his men.
“All Danes who have sprung up in this island are to be destroyed by a most just extermination.” (Paraphrased)
This evil act would haunt King Aethelred who had acted out of impulse, as word would spread to Scandinavia the Vikings would become infuriated with the massacre of their kinsman.
Sweyn Forkbeard, the King of Denmark had heard that his sister Gunhilde and her husband Pallig were killed during the massacre. Sweyn was a very capable King and was restless. He started his reign with violence when he revolted against his own father Harald Bluetooth. Before he thought to retaliate against King Aethelred, he first negotiated an agreement with Duke Richard II of Normandy, whereby the Danes gained permission to sell all of their spoils of war in Normandy.
Sweyn would then raise an army, like the Vikings of old; he would sail towards England with his goal being conquest. King Aethelred’s lands would burn and a devastating war would change England forever. This is the story of the first Viking Kings of England and how the royal line of Alfred the great was pushed aside. This is the story of the Viking conquest of England.

I wonder why all the Viking and Anglo-Saxon shows can't just tell the real stories of the real people? Why do they mix different historical figures from different centuries when the actual people and stories are so much more fascinating than the fictional fabrications being produced?

I agree! The true history is so fascinating plus it increases one’s knowledge. The young people ( well, anybody under 70!) these days seem under-educated enough without feeding them more confused drivel that they are going to presume is the real history.
I absolutely loved this & so glad I found it today! Thank you, Sir!
I truly cannot believe that the Viking influence in the British Isles was not taught in our history classes in high school (1960’s). I’m having a wonderful time catching up on all of this! Now I have 2 reasons to be pissed off about the history curriculum in Canada in the 1960’s!
The other period that disappointed me back then was the almost non-existent history of the First Nations people.
My Gran who was from Kent mentioned that we had some Danish ancestry but it is unconfirmed for now. I do know that I have Scottish, Dutch & Mohawk blood.
Was there a very strong presence of Danish in Kent?
I tried using Google to find out if there were any Dutch Vikings but got nowhere. However, a young man who has a Norse magic & traditions show on UA-cam mentioned a heroic person named
      Redbad.
Do you have any info on him?
I didn’t finish watching all of the episodes of Vikings but did see Vikings Valhalla which I presumed was not particularly accurate ( I just was watching due to the handsome men! Hey, I may be 71 but I’m not dead yet!).
However, I was deeply obsessed with The Last Kingdom. I bought the series because I thought that it was the best TV show I’d seen in…well, forever. I also assumed that it had more than just a grain of accuracy. It certainly opened my eyes to that period of history. I love the author, Bernard Cornwell anyways & bought the whole series of books by “ treasure hunting” in thrift stores.
How I wish I knew all of this when I was much younger because I would’ve loved to go to England to see some of the historic sites and artifacts uncovered from that period.
I am DEFINITELY now a subscriber & look forward to what you will be presenting to us next!
      THANK YOU!!

I couldn’t agree with u more! I’ve always wondered y these shows fabricate or makeup stories about historical figures, when there’s no need to, cos the real true life stories of these ppl are just as fascinating as the fictional story/plot/character arcs etc. at least I no I’m not the only 1 to think it lol x

@@jessrosefawkes2721 Thank you so much for your kind encouragement! It would be lovely to follow this dream. Maybe if I could find some decent doctors to stabilize my health problems ( I seem to collect autoimmune diseases like some people collect coins!).
My son had been a great traveller, mostly to scientific conferences & I’d always thought that he’d take me sometime. But he passed away 8 years ago on a winter hiking trip in the North. It was an impulsive decision he made to check out a new hiking & ski-do trail near where we used to have our house. There was a severe cold weather warning for that day that he probably didn’t hear because he had a stack of cd’s in the car. We had no idea he was up there. I couldn’t warn him that since he hadn’t been back there since he was 5, he didn’t know how to dress for that far in Northern Ontario. He got lost & froze to death.
I did have chronic health problems before but I’ve been understandably gutted since then.
Right now the doctor shortage & long wait lists are horrible. If I could maybe be seen by a doctor with more knowledge in Toronto then maybe I have a chance to be better attended to.
I do what I can & am lucky that I’ve been a voracious reader my whole life! I still have one child, my daughter, and the little Snowshoe Siamese cat my son got me a year before he passed away.
      I’m blessed that way!
Mind you, I must confess that I have been terribly depressed for a few months.
Today is Mother’s Day here & the sun actually has come out (at least I think that big warm shiny thing in the sky is the sun!).
You’ve brightened my day & I certainly hope you can come to Canada some day (but see the countryside, not the Southern Ontario cities. We have spectacular scenery & I would so love to move back to British Columbia!).

The fact that he ordered the assassination of Edmonds sons is telling though. The embarrassment of denying single combat with him may have been too much to handle for him in front of his viking army who above all admired strength

The Viking is a profession, it's essentially a Germanic pirate.
You could even say Anglo-Saxons were Vikings. Raiders who settled down, sailed, and then converted to Christianity.
Anyway there were some Finnish, Slavic, or Baltic Viking pirates, the Cerunonians were famous Vikings. Because they were still pirates raiding the Baltic coast. And they were pagans. But they were proto Latvians. All Vikings were Europeans, except Kilick the Avar. But who gives a fuck about one Turk.
Most Vikings were Anglo-Saxons and Danes, Geats, Swedes and Norsemen.
Some were from Uralic, Baltic, Slavic or Celtic ethnicities but the vast majority were Scandinavians
