I used to live in Czechoslovakia behind the Iron Curtain, and I remember watching this live on West German TV that night. It was for the first time ever that I heard either Ian Hunter or Mick Ronson.
The simple fact that you can identify Mick Ronson by the tone he generates from his guitar is a signature trait of any great guitarist. Page, Beck, May and Knoppfler come to mind. I just know what I like, as for the accolades, I leave that to others. You hone your craft and do your best with what God gave you to begin with.
Ian Hunter with Mick Ronson opened for Heart at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1980. The consensus at my high school after the show was that Ian blew heart off the stage. It was a helluva show back then and I enjoyed every minute of it. I cannot hear any of Ian’s songs without being transported back to how I felt after seeing him live then. I am so glad to come across this footage of him and the band from back then!
I was there, too. I agree that Heart seemed to just be going thru the paces. But I was there to see Ian , and he put on a great show! Hard to believe he's got a new album coming out at the age of 82.
Thank you very much! I was the drummer with ian Hunter on that tour with heart (and I'm in this video- mad they didn't have my floor tom mics on but we had a fun show in Essen germany @. Rockpalast..) Yeah glad they captured this band. We were really good friends and all close from working non stop. Mick and I both lived up here in Woodstock so we'd often hang out after the tours and record a bunch. Cheers!

Ladies and gentlemen, German television proudly presents… Rockpalast was an icon for fans of live rock music in the 80s and 90s. We have to thank the WDR for this great music format. The Rockpalast nights in the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany had some unforgettable acts.
Watched it Live on German tv, simultaneously Stuttgart Radio aired the concert in stereo, still have the reel to reel tape from this concert, that gig was magic.
Zugabe, Zugabe, Zugabe! What a fantastic concert. I was 18 watching this show on TV, but listening in parallel on the WDR radio channel. Rockpalast was so important for us young ones.
Never will forget seeing them at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood with my girlfriend soon to be wife right in front of the stage! They were all terrific but Mick Ronson stood out and will forever be one of the top 5 guitarists I've ever seen.
