I was looking for a song to sing to my wife-to-be when I proposed to her, in front of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, where we had our first date. I wanted a real love song, something I could believe in, and nothing was coming to me. A lot of the places I was looking - I was listening to Billie Holiday, for example- all of these songs had so much pain in them.
“Make You Feel My Love,” is a Bob Dylan song that most Dylan fans don’t think is cool, probably because it was a big pop hit, and now it is like a new standard, it gets played at weddings, on karaoke night, on stupid TV talent shows. When Bob plays it in concert, hardcore fans go to the bar! But when I listened to it again, I realized that it was a masterful love song. Perfection. And it is a very devotional song, it has a lot of religious power to it, if you want to see it that way: “I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue, I'd go crawling down the avenue, there's nothing that I wouldn't do, to make you feel my love...” It's very romantic, but it fits in well with our other spirituals, blues, rock’n’roll, and songs about salvation. Love is like that.
I sang it like a thousand times before I proposed to my girl. I was practicing it in the taxi rushing across Times Square to be on time to meet her at the Opera House. The driver thought I was nuts. It was a great New York moment. I felt like I was in a movie. And now the song was in my heart forever, and when I sang it in bars in New York band, all the women cried. This song could have been sung Paris in 1940s, New York in 1957, or Spain right now. It is timeless.

“Cuando planeaba cómo proponerle matrimonio a mi futura esposa me puse a buscar una canción que cantarle frente al Metropolitan Opera House de Nueva York, donde tuvimos nuestra primera cita.
