  • From Sleep (Deutsche Grammophon 0289 479 5267 1 DDD GH).
Monumental work that will certainly stay Max Richter's milestone in his discography, Sleep intends to be a lullaby for our frenetic world. A moment of peace for those who haven't the time to take the time anymore.
Non-Eternal really stands out in these 500 minutes of continuous music, meant to accompany you in your sleep and gently ride the wave of your dreams next to you. Taking place in the middle of your night, the track first unfurls ghostly vocals echoing in the unseizable distances of space. A melancholic lullaby of a lost childish memory, reverberating in our inner world as a delicate catharsis to reach the edge of oblivion. A lone voice conversing with itself, eternally feeding over its own circling harmonics.
The main melodic theme is eventually replaced by concrete classical orchestrations of piano and strings, naturally taking over the legacy of the previous vocals. A real conversation now emerges between the two instruments, pushing the night and our intrinsic feelings forwards through the night. A lacrymal complementarity born in the nothingness and raised on chaos catches our last errating thoughts to focus on the unique goal to reach peace.
With Sleep, Max Richter invited himself in our lives when we are the most vulnerable, and brought gentleness in a world that cruelly lacks of it. This is also why this album is particularly effective and positive when listened to under a blanket, in a bed, when the moon is leisurely shining over our heads...

When I was travelling my car was crossing the desert, during the most deep and dark night, and I just woke up when this song was playing on my earphones. Then, I looked up and saw the sky full of stars, and suddenly I was hypnotized by a particulary big and shiny star. I looked at her during the song, till the end. And in that moment I felt a strange feeling about that stars, the sky, the universe. I felt that all the universe was talking through the shine of the star. It was beautiful.

Listening to this music, over and over again, and reading the comment section, I always remember a comment I once read:
"May my life be full of people who like this music"
I imagine they are like distant lights which you see from a plane during a night flight over a country. Familiar? The humming sound of the "modern world" which is just "noise" to you which you have been listening for a good amount of time. And when you see these distant lights, you realize you have been craving for them. So small, so distant, so few...

This music reveals so many things..
Sings as a sweet childhood, memory of happiness and love
Sings as a sweet done childhood, not eternal..
Then I think about all the people and the situation I live now
Think and understand that it's not eternal too..
Make me cry with tears of joy, nostalgia, love, sadness, fears, beauty..
    Thank you

I listen to ambient music for decades. This work is a masterpiece. I wonder how it is possible to put so much emotion into music. Our generation is fortunate that we live in times when technology gives us the opportunity to express a new consciousness with music. Hopefully that will help a little to protect life on this planet from our aggression.

    • @ADDADotflac

The birth of digital networks was indeed a new crucial step to push music forward, as much for an artist's music than for the people accessing his music. A temporary cesura from this agitated world...

In the land of the imaginary, believing is often enough though.

    • @andreasjour-spitzer3108
      @andreasjour-spitzer3108 6 років тому +20

If only a fraction of the beauty of this music were expressed in the mind of the people, that would already change a lot. I am convinced that major changes are possible only through a change of consciousness.
More compassion, sensitivity, empathy, love and understanding for the things of this world. Music alone is not enough. But maybe a start. Einstein once said that a problem can not be solved by the means of the system from which the problem results. Therefore, we will not be able to solve today's problems with technology. Because most of the problems were caused by the use of technology (environmental destruction, wars, nuclear threat, unnecessary use of antibiotics, factory farming, etc.). So I think the solution has to be found through another 'system'. This could be the immaterial 'system', the mind, the consciousness or even the faith. I'm afraid there's still a lot of work to do. The dissemination of intellectual works such as this piece of music here is a positive example of the use of technology. It's not always just black or white.

It's not a cruel world that lacks gentleness, it's a cruel society that lacks it.
To sit on a mesa and see a desert with islands of mountains sprawl to the horizon is peace and gentleness, that is the world. It has its pains, but not at the level of this society, a social structure hell-bent on destruction, progress through industrial technology, the severe lack of wisdom from its leaders, money made from perpetual war, and the deep conditioning in beliefs that inevitably divide us.
We should be more precise with our words, they carry energy from one individual to another creating a larger energy that if not accurately used might cause a deeper problem.

    • @ADDADotflac
      @ADDADotflac  5 років тому

For me, the problem is already larger than society and slowly mutates the world into something we will like less and less over time, probably not a long amount. So yes, this is for me the word I would still use !

    • @SopwithMammal
      @SopwithMammal 5 років тому

@@ADDADotflac By all means use the word you prefer and how you define it. With kindness, I find your statement somewhat confusing, though. The social and mental structure, Western 'Modern' Society and its concomittant fragmented mental state, mutates the world. How is the world to be blamed for the larger expression of psychosis of a given society?
So, let me be more specific: How is a mesa, a mountain, or a bear to be less and less over time? Perhaps, by a social pattern couched in domination, industrialism, and consumerism? It's not larger than society or the mechanistic, shattered mind that created it. That is the problem, our mind and the society that is born from it.
We Humans are social creatures, we create cultures to express ourselves, and if the culture is based on domination and conquest, then it naturally would unfold in that direction. Our healing, and the healing of the world, would come from participating in it less, and eventually leaving it all together, to create something inclusive and within the biosphere of the planet.
As an indigenous person, I've experienced what a cohesive, social pattern, based in a direct relationship with nature, looks like. We have been as any other creature in nature, sharing our knowledge and experience with other life, as they have in turn, but Western Society has gone global and its mind with it, treating earth-based cultures with extreme prejudice and misunderstanding.
'Modern' society claims to understand the power of language, disconnected from the world and the universe at large, but it inevitably misplaces it on subjects it doesn't have a relationship to, or even understand.

    • @ADDADotflac
      @ADDADotflac  5 років тому

@@SopwithMammal I can get your point, don't worry.
It's just that the whole world, for me, is intimately linked to what we, as (most) humans, did, still do, and will probably keep doing. Nothing out there asked to be part of it, but we included it in our decisions, evergrowing needs, bad forward-thinking.
And I believe your point of view is valid, but I'm far too pessimistic to think that we, again, as (most) humans, will realize before it's too late what needs to be done to change the situation we are diving in. It just doesn't seem to be in our nature, and our print on everything surrounding us is in my opinion far too etched in the ground to not think we will take everything with us in the end, whatever end it might be. The world is more and more hostile because we made it so.
More than a question of understanding of some specific words, it's up to my very own cynical interpretation of these words, and the relationships they share.
