Touching on something you said... As someone who grew up in the 60's, I can tell you that as great as all the music that was coming out at the time was, nothing could compare to the anticipation and excitement of a new Beatles album. There was never any concern that the album might disappoint and we all bought each new release as soon as we possibly could.
One of my favorite Beatles songs from my favorite Beatles album…most people say this is one of John’s best vocal performances in the Beatles….of course it helps he’s backed by Paul and George on the chorus harmonies
Agreed! And George’s guitar on this song is absolutely sublime. In fact, my life and musicianship was so affected by this song that I can remember EXACTLY where I was when I first heard it. (I’m 40, and I heard it at 18- I was gifted the record for mi birthday. I had a quiet night in with mi record player, a bottle of Scotch gifted me by mi best mate, and two tabs of acid that I gifted miself.
I recall hearing someone say a while back that some well-regarded big-shot of more classical music, Bernstein or that other guy (wrote Do You Know the way to San Jose)?, was traveling on a plane and heard this song through his headphones and declared to himself that the Beatles truly are as great as so many young people were saying that they were. The song made a believer out of him. March 15, 2023
Yes, Paul and George were a little bit explicit, but it worked. And the line, "Will she still believe it when he's dead" was a revolutionary thing to say in a pop song. Amazing!
Almost a guaranteed record-stopper when this album is played thru... I just had to hear it again and again to believe it. RUBBER SOUL might be one of the first rock albums that demanded 'complete listenings' from Moment One, too. All their others - I love listening to them front to back - but this album takes that higher. And remember that the UK original version had different sequences and even different songs compared to the USA-Capitol album that I grew up with.
This song - like so many of Lennon's - is so much fiction, too. At this point in his life, no woman was walking away from the Beatles so all these heart-break songs are fiction. BUT THAT'S NOT BAD. That shows a creativity and an imagination level that all songwriters need, but so few achieve.
I recall reading this song was written when John was on holiday visiting Greece. There's a strong Greek influence to the chord structure and by the style in which they strum the guitar throughout. The instrumental part right before the end sounds very Mediterranean as well. As you pointed out, John's voice is so superb in this song. The way he sings the opening line in particular (Is there anybody going to listen to my story) sounds like he's begging for attention. You can feel the crying plea in his voice. Pure excellence.
Yes definitely inspired by Greek music. While in Greece John walked into a music store. The owner recognized the famous Beatle and was proudly trying to show John one of his electric guitars. But, John was not interested. Instead he asked the owner to show him a bazouki.
Yeah and not only the chords and strumming, but also the scale of the melody! Which George Martin apparently didn’t like too much, considering that the instrumental arrangement he once recorded changed one of the particularity Greek notes to fit northern music better
@@mikeanton9125 I can only imagine their faces when they realized it was Lennon. That surely must've been quite a thrill to have a world famous musician walk into your music store. I can bet their conversation went as thus....Store Owner: Would you like to buy a guitar? Lennon: No thanks, I've already got one of those.
@@Nerkin610 I always enjoyed that instrumental part. I'm not sure, but I think they came up with two different guitar licks, the slower one that's played while he sings the last verse, then the other one that's plucked in double time. Rather than just using one or the other, they played both simultaneously. The two together compliment each other perfectly.
@@tdgallagher218 I definitely second that! Sorry for being unclear, but I was referring to George Martin’s instrumental arrangement of the entire song, which he released the following year: m.ua-cam.com/video/KsBO8GMn_TU/v-deo.html Excellent album with excellent arrangements all through, but as someone points out in the comments, the sorrowful half step of “all about a girl who CAME to stay” has been exchanged with a much more standard whole step, which steals from the mysterious and melancholic Greek sound. George, being a masterful arranger, most likely did it deliberately as a variation. Even the masters can sometimes make bad decisions!
Rubber Soul is the best album of The Beatles in my opinion. The Beatles were very much inspired by Buddy Holly and The Crickets one of my favorites too.
About that girl named Mary Jane... Rubber Soul is sometimes cast as The Beatles "pot" album, in contrast to Revolver as their "LSD" album. The deeps sighs in this song could also be mistaken for taking a deep drag on a joint and holding in the smoke. Mary Jane is often used as a veiled reference to marijuana, aka cannabis, aka pot. Juana would be the feminine of the Spanish name Juan, equivalent to the English name John with its feminine counterpart Jane. Two musical examples of this usage are "Mary Jane" by Rick James and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Cim, I believe you were blushing 🙂I love this song too. There is a thought that 'Girl' (recorded Nov 11 1965) was the beginning of the end for the Beatles. John's 3rd verse commentary on Catholicism was subtle. In an interview 4 months later (Mar 4, 1966) John was quoted, "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that. I'm right and will be proved right. We are more popular than Jesus'. In the article John goes on to contextualize his reasoning. But no matter the context, the damage was done. The Beatles invincible aura was breached. The next 18 months (following John's March 4 interview) would have enormous highs (Revolver and Sgt. Peppers) and sadly (with Brian Epstein's untimely passing) devastating lows. One thing is certain (for good and bad) these 18 months changed the Beatles forever. RNB
He was right, but only in part. Christianity is indeed shrinking in Europe and US due to the spread and corrosive action of leftist (marxist) ideology. However, it is the fastest growing religion in Africa, Asia, and amongst many Muslims, who have to keep it secret in fear of backlash. Lennon was abrasive and thought any publicity was good publicity. Thank you, Cimdy, as usual.
Hmm I was a kid back then and I don't recall anything about him saying Christianity will vanish and shrink. I do recall that he was said to have said that the the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. Also, I seem to recall that the firestorm happened in 1967, not 1966 (though I could be wrong). I forgot to add that "Rubber Soul" is an iconic, incredible album. Damn, it's just so good. John referred to this as the "Pot Album" and you can really hear it as it's such a damn cool chill vibe. By 1965 standards, The Beatles were being a bit naughty with the "tit-tit-tit-tit" background vocals. Also the exaggerated draws of breath were supposed to be like smoking a joint. You may have mentioned these points in your reaction but my video is buffering.
