- Join me, The Preppy Gardener, as I transform the screen porch at Okarga Farms into a vibrant and lush spring oasis.
Throughout the summer, I will be providing updates on the growth and development of the planters, showcasing the vibrant colors and lush foliage as the season progresses. I am particularly excited to see how the plants will antique and weather with the heat and humidity, creating a beautiful display that will thrive in the shade of the porch.
In addition to the planters, I am also focusing on accessorizing the screened porch area, bringing in smaller containers to add more color and life to the space. I am adding magazines and throws to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the plants.
Overall, I am thrilled with the way the planters and accessories are coming together, and I can't wait to see how they will enhance the beauty and enjoyment of the porch throughout the summer. The containers are beautiful. But, I’m concerned about the number of plants you put into each container. I would have thought that would be too many and they all wouldn’t survive. What are your thoughts on this method? Thank you for sharing.

New to your channel. Love gardening, but age and arthritis prevent me from doing what I used to. I just bought a log home with a porch about that large. You’ve given me great ideas for a garden on the porch. Just one suggestion-put a tarp under your work so that clean-up is easier.

Where can I find a birdhouse like the one on your porch
Jamie - I buy birdhouses from many different sources and espcially as I travel. I LOVE having them as decorative objects as well as in the garden for the birds. My advice is to keep your eye out for one that speaks to you! Thank you for watching

Love the chartreuse with the blue hydrangeas. I have never put so many pants in one pot. What an amazing visual. Also loved seeing a little of your fall and winter porch styling. Eye Candy for sure. What a beautiful spot to enjoy the seasons. Lanterns and wonderful pots are a must for any garden setting. And the book as the icing on the cake. Perfectly wonderful!!!!!

Stunning! I wish I had your green thumb. I did learn that you can stuff quite a few plants in one container this morning! lol.
The plantings are absolutely stunning! What a beautiful addition to your porch. As a new subscriber, I don't know if you ask for input from the viewers or not, so hopefully, suggestions are okay. I wondered if it would make sense to bring some more color into the furniture with pillows that pick up either green or the purple/blue of the hydrangea? Just a thought to continue to echo the wonderful color-scape of the plantings that you created. I can only imagine how peaceful your porch is at all times of the year! Nice job.

Oh my gosh, just discovered your magnificent property! And I just have to remember that I can put plants and even little trees in big pots! Our problem is we have so many deer that can ruin a landscape in one season! I have to be so careful with deer resistant plants… But I have to ask… Please tell me where you got those planters you were planting the hydrangeas in!

What zone are you in? The spiral boxwood is beautiful, does it stay indoors all year? I thought boxwood needed lots more light

Will those hydrangeas stay small. All of mine are huge. Would love to plant some in barrel planters but not if they grow huge like the ones I already have in ground
Hello Kathy -They will not really "grow" much as they are more of a one season hydrangea - grown more for the impact of the bloom. Once we near the autumn, they will be discarded and probably replaced by mums. Thank you for watching!
That seems like a lot of plants squished into that pot. I’ve been told not to overcrowd. Which one is it squish in a lot or don’t overcrowd??
Kathy - I planted these for immediate impact. The hydrangea and hosta will basically stay they same size. The foxtail ferna and spiller plants will grow but should just fall over the container and down. I think it depends on what and where you are planting. There are no hard rules in gardening - many times it is your particular sitaution and location that dictates more specific "rules". Happy gardening!
Do you add soil after you plant all those plants? What about watering? I fail miserably at doing these planters.
I do top out any roots that may need more soil on top and water thoroughly usually every other day - checking daily to see if water is needed. I also fertilize atleast twice a month with a water soluable fertilizer to keep the nutrients flowing in the plants. This is just my method - and in most cases it’s just monitoring your situation and water and fertilize when needed

Chip, Do you have any recommendation for cleaning the screens on your porch? I have such trouble with streaking (the screens are black).
Barbara - My screen is a poly/heavy plastic based screen and I have only used water to hose them down. I try to give them a really good wash twice a year and so far that is all I have done. Good luck with yours!

Those purple hydrangeas are just beautiful. I have used to Reina many times in the past and have had much success with Incas long as it is deadheaded daily.
