Recorded in Brussels (Belgium) on May 2, 1964 by R.T.B.
The clip was rendered in soft indigo.
If more people listened to this more often, the world would be a more peaceful place.
Absolutely!
if only focusing on commonalities was lucrative. not even mutual benefit, but simply shared humanity...
Chet covered this song many times through all his life, sometimes dense, sometimes uptempo, and sometimes even very uninspired. But this one, Belgium 1964 is the best of them all
Belgium girls brought it out of him, I have no doubt they did.
The way Chet sings brings out melancholy feelings specially during lonely and cold rainy nights!
Where can we find those other renditions? I only know 2
@@sayanorasonic Live albums mostly and bootlegs. On studio recordings if I'm not wrong were 3 different versions plus one fully instrumental. Those I guess you can find them here in YT
I love chet 😢❤
His singing is an extension of his trumpet playing. Excellent.
totally agree
That was always my thought too. He sings like he plays.
Other way around! But yes.
I agree with Noah Pettibon. Other way around! But yes.
This is one of the most beautiful performances i have ever seen and heard
Yes indeed, wonderful. Contains all the magic of Chet Baker. The warm, dark, melancholy tone of his u ique trumpet playing and his romantic innocent style of singing. Pure magic! The quintessence of Chet Baker.
I’ve already decided, this is going to be the song playing for my first dance with my future bride. Such a warm song
Magnifico
Same
Phenomenal choice. Adore this song
Maybe the bride will have something to say about that?
That flute player.. sitting there the entire song to play a single note at the end makes me giggle every time I watch this. Chet's solo here was nothing short of completely amazing.
Just an NPC.
lol, no, he plays while Chet sings, but yeah, the rest of the song he looks mesmerized.
He is us watching Chet
1:20-1:35 ??
A lot of people can play music, but no one else FELT it like Chet Baker.
Can’t argue with that, RIP Chet
Yes...He was very deep all the way around ❤
I adore Chet's vocal. His straight tone, the intervals and extensions he chooses to hit...This is the best version of "Time After Time," imo, for sure. RIP Chet.
So poignant. Nearly brings me to tears every time I listen. So good. Timeless.
I wish I could go back in time to see Chet. One of my all time favourite Jazz artists.
What a gorgeous flugelhorn solo - absolute magic. Pure Chet.
This is what pop music now is missing....
Singing and playing with heart
Precisely
Well I’ve just had an uplifting evening crying over Chet Baker, move over Leonard Cohen, I’ve found someone new to die with. RIP beautiful man
Cohen wasn't 1/10th the musician that Chet was
The audio quality sound really good, and Chet sound amazing...
Damn learning his solo by heart is a joy, especially when ur instrument is also tuned in Bb
The greatest doomer artist ever live RIP. your songs will still be playing some where in a space bar in the Distance future and Beyond.
How he holds that note at 5:07 and the piano kicks in is ultimate musicianship
and time after time
you hear me say that I'm
so lucky to be... loving you...
nobody interprets this song better than Mr. Baker.
I've been crying for 12 minutes straight
Theres no time machine, so sad.
That trumpet Melody harmonized with the piano at 5:23 is sooo good
Clyde Densmore Just noticed that. Brilliant!
I will never say that Chet Baker was a phenomenal singer, but there's something about his voice that just...works. and all things considered, he actually does sing extremely well. Keeping within his vocal range and never going off tune when he hits the higher notes. He's definitely in my top 10 of jazz singers.
tbh, he's a great singer.
I agree, his style just works and i believe if you sing with passion others will love your voice
This goes for many artists in my opinion. Rory Gallagher is another one of my favorite artists where he probably doesnt have the greatest voice but his passionate singing coupled with his guitar playing just works and is out of this world.
"actually"
And this performance, by all 5 musicians, is a moment of grace ... forever. @@jamesmcinnis208
this is absolutely breathtaking
He reaches in and grabs my heart. Hard...
Same and I’m hooked 🥰
wonderful.
I cannot hear this song and not cry....of missing you my dear dear Chet! forever alive in my heart
Grettings from Colombia 🇨🇴 ♥️😢
As long as you remember him and think of him he’ll never die! Heart and Soul, always remember ❤️🎼
Incomparable, hauntingly beautiful.
Absolutely! I concur wholeheartedly! Well put!
You know it's legendary when the second you hear the first piano note you unconsciously close your eyes to appreciate it
This shows what it means to play with emotion.
I am to get married 21/07 and this song is to be my first dance - what a great tribute to Chet
dave allen was it beautiful? I bet it was...
Crongratulations my brother. God bless your new family. Big hug from Brazil
@@JeanPhilipe we brazilians are really everywhere
Hope the marriage is going really well bud! Cheers!
It was ours too :)
Just perfect...
Every time I come back to this and listen closely, it makes me re-feel every emotion I have felt in my life.
The beauty of this and his lyricism are unmatched...
no question
This is one of my dad's favorite artist that I've forgotten thanks to V for helping me remember old memories. Now I'm missing my dad, it's nice feeling.
My sweet love
the lows sound so much fuller and the high end is cleaner in this. Sounds so great
I can hear it it’s so good
The other thing about Chet is that I want to listen when he sings. His soulfulness captures my attention the way few other singers can.
The best, most beautiful version of this standard. The quintessence of his trumpet playing and unique singing style. Sounds like an angel. 😊Chet was an icon of a jazz musician.
I'm in love.
Such an artist 🙌🏾
Lyrics according to Genius:
"Time after time
I tell myself that I'm
So lucky to be loving you
So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening when the day is through
I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You've kept my love so young, so new
And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you
[horn solo]
I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You've kept my love so young, so new
And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you"
up
But he doesn't do any singing after the solo.
absolutely beautiful
This is my favorite rendition of this song. Thank you for cleaning up and uploading this.

Agree! Even the audio sounds a bit remastered
I would kill to work in a place like this.......Singing in between sets......in a silky black gown, Eva Gardner wore one with a strap across one shoulder. Debbie Bader
We still need this superb way of life. Thanks Mr Baker. What a sweet moment...
His love songs are lovely
thank you so much for restoring this...
One of my best friends showed me this back around 2013 or so eternally grateful thanks Bob
i listened to this yesterday at my best friend's house, just a few days before his departure to another city, looking for a better opportunity. just listening to this, an 11 year old rioja wine that symbolized our friendship since we were in the university since 2008. just talking about our life's expectations and experiences throughout the years, and our love dissapointments and gals that went away as well. just true..raw...talk...and listening to this.
shed manly tears, and nothing held back. no homo, needless to say.
and indeed, with a few instruments, yet it gets very sentimental.
That's a very nice kind of third stream observation. Slow time blues and smoke down to four feet off the floor music. Five dollar an ounce cappuccino and Galois cigarettes. cheers
Everything comes to a halt; my ears rejoice - my heart beats as slowly as possible not to disturb the music, it wishes to completely stop. It's hard for me to find something better than this, visually and acoustically. This is the zenith of music, of talent, of a man. every emotion we have isn't developed enough to respond to this. My hearing can leave me at 6:47 for I have heard the most beautiful thing.
Ziyad Alharbi Love what you write, especially about this representing the zenith of artistic creativity...
Dear dear Chet . . .
This is a fabulous restoration of a great performance.

Roy Orbison and Chet Baker: Two angel voices ‼️😇😇
the best cool jazzer ever---unpretentious..always outside
Pure chill.
You Can feel his soul!! He's truly a great singer for me, with a very great affection to the listener!! He has this incredible connection.😢❤️!!! He can calm a broken hearted or a very barbaric heart!!! He can make you fall inlove.. oohhh what an artist!!! How i wish i had the chance to see his performance live.
Listening to Chet, no more comments are needed.
Achingly beautiful and incredibly sad
My favorite song ever, this is my inner fire
Was there. Chet is the anthem to his time.
Perfect Pitch is a talent and Chet has it.
His playing was so incredibly tasteful

Marc Winand thank you!
the flute guy plays it way better than i do, even when he does not play it at all
Thanks.
4:27 almost sounds flute-like. So good!
Chet is one of my favorites by a mile, so melodic
Unique and totally cool. Chet had a tone that’s just magical. Inspiring and never forgotten.
Time after time's chet baker tribute by Miles Davis...don´t forget. Just precious. we will love you from Ragtime club in Zaragoza (Spain). Fly High in our Dreams Chet.

LOVELY MUSIC!!!! MELLOW JAZZ PRODUCES WONDERFUL VIBES!!! 😊😊😊.
Song has touched me so much, that I'v never before in my life wanted to sing along with a song as badly as I'v sung with this one. True inspiration, the other of course is Nat King Cole
Happy birthday legend 🥳🎈
Deep warming performance.
MY CHET...MY LOVE!!!!
his voice is identical to his trumpets voice. extraordinary
Imagine dancing with someone in a moonlit room alone
then this song plays while you dance
The unforgoten night
I proposed to my fiancée last Friday night. After she said yes we smiled, cried and hugged, then slowly danced to this as the in our flat above the city.
If it helps, you were right. This felt pretty special.

Automáticamente se me nublan los ojos con esta versión de Chet,Romántico,impresionista..Chet es un Icono del siglo XX ...incomparable
De acuerdo contigo. Amo a chet baker con todo mi ♥️
Maybe his peak for vocals and playing...always loved him.
Beautiful playing, wonderful .....
Thank you for this !!
Concuerdo contigo
There seems to be only one current jazz artist that is carrying on in the Chet Baker style. A girl. A young woman musical prodigy. She is Andrea Motis who sings in perfect pitch, plays exquisite trumpet, and performs with the rhythm and style style of the jazz greats. She lives in Barcelona. You can find her performance videos all over UA-cam.
Andrea Motis and her extended musical family are quite phenomenal! I really enjoy watching Marina Glass practice phrases of his songs. SoulStation Winnipeg has at least one great short cover (trio) recorded in the vocalist lady's kitchen. I enjoy Cheryl Bentyne and Hans Stamer covers. I think Chet gets a fair bit of love overall, but it's typically melancholic and pretty disembodied cerebral lovers' torch music, so I can see why other artists and styles get more rotation overall. The low-key smoker's lounge afterhours winebars will never see a night go by without C.Baker
Chet would have dug Andrea’s vocal style and playing.
Magali Datzira is better sings with more emotion!
Golden just golden
Great songs lives forever!!!! 😍😍😍
Haunting
Lucky me, to see him perform! here! , Thank you very much for this video!
Next level flame, this my favourite old song
healing vibe
This version my favorite one in own world. It's true. Thank you Chet! R.I.P
What a lovely and touching improvisation.
One of my favourites EVER!❤️
Chet wonderful trumpet and his singing!,
Young Chet
A trip through the stars....
This takes me back to my childhood. My neigbour would play the hellout of his trumpet but he was no Chet. His was pure torture. This more than makes up for those days. Thanks Chet.
Gets me everytime
This is was the Best remaster that i ever see of Chet Baker videos. Thank you so much!!! Very clear sound.
Most beautiful sound ever
Absolutely gorgeous... Such a lovely song, that I'd never heard before, and of course delivered in that lovingly gentle stream of light that is Chet Baker's voice, the perfect characteristic to a similarly gorgeous face; however: I think in a way, one can look through the soothing haze of the vibe in this recording and see how the broken, damaged man that Baker was becoming actually lends itself to a kind of tragic melancholy that I think can also be read. If anyone isn't familiar with Chet Baker's story, I strongly suggest reading his Wikipedia page. A painful life for such a promising young musician, Chet was a fierce heroin addict. The page says he started using heroin in the 50's and would have been addicted in the 60's, sometimes getting arrested in countries where he was performing or he would he found trying to pawn his instruments for drug money. This recording is from 1964, so I think it would have been around the peak of his abuse. What looks like a missing tooth in this video says it all for me. The pain kind of etches itself into his face, the way the heroin degraded his dreamy boyish features over the years - looking at pictures closer to the time of his death, he was 58 but he looked like he could have been 80. He fell out hotel window, supposedly high, I think.
In the hush of midnight's shadowed tune,
Chet's trumpet weeps beneath the moon.
Notes like teardrops softly fall,
Echoes of a melancholy call.
In smoky rooms where shadows dance,
Chet's horn weaves a forlorn romance.
A solitary sigh, a lonesome cry,
As melodies of heartache amplify.
His trumpet whispers tales untold,
Of love that's young, and love grown old.
Through muted brass, a mournful plea,
A requiem for lost ecstasy.
A lonely street, a dim-lit bar,
Chet's music drifts like a fading star.
In every chord, a soul laid bare,
A sonnet of sorrow suspended in air.
Each breath he takes, a heavy sigh,
A wistful echo, a muted goodbye.
Through amber notes, the pain unfolds,
A symphony of sorrows, stories untold.
The night embraces the mournful sound,
As Chet's trumpet weeps, unbound.
A ballad etched in shadows deep,
In the music of Chet, the sadness seeps.
Great poetry
A poet and ya didnt even know it!

Artie, thanks for your well written comment. Much appreciated! Its brevity is exceeded only by its eloquence . . .@@artielarengano9287
Even without one front tooth, he's magical.
This is perfectly beautiful to hear, but painfully hard to watch, seeing the damage already done and knowing the damage to come.
Adele Eleda By this time Chet was already struggling harshly with Heroin abuse, you can see some of his missing teeth as he sings. Through the 60s and 70s his drug abuse only got much worse :(
@@JoeSmith-nh2nw The missing teeth thing is not because of drugs 'per se'. It was caused in an incident where he was beaten up...
@@AlonsoUQ He was beaten due to buying heroin from an unreliable source. The drug business is a grim one
Alonso Urias He was already missing a tooth since he was a kid, you might not have noticed but even in the 1956 video on youtube he's missing a tooth. The beating happened later in the 60s and he lost the ability to play for a while.
@@lrn_news9171 Thanks for setting the gang here straight...
I still miss him so much!
Smoky cool.
