Try moistening the area to be touched up, wetting beyond the actual flaw. Wait until the shine is almost gone, then touch up, stopping short of the wet edge. Voila. The moisture helps the paint diffuse, leaving a soft edge instead of a hard edge. Works for me.
rjsongwriter
great tip :)
hi how long takes to shine go?
@@farilaklak 3 months 😳
rjsongwriter I moist it the area to be touched up with water or only the edges of the area? then re paint over it or wait ? what do you mean by the "actual flaw", Thanks
@@sutil5078 By "actual flaw," I mean the patch or repair that is making a touch-up necessary. if you are touching up a patch or repair, wet that and the area around it. Wet it well beyond the area you intend to touch up, so that the wall is moist at the edge of the new paint, which allows the fresh paint to feather out. Hope this helps.
I don’t normally comment on things like this, but this was THE BEST tip ever! Works beautifully! Thank you.
My wife found this video today and we followed the process. Absolutely brilliant idea, and the finished job on paint 15 years old is amazing.
The touch up areas are just like new - thanks for the tip.......had never considered using paper towel before. Made things so easy!
So smart I tried this with a wet paper towel and some water down paint and it worked like a dream thank you!
Tried it out today! Worked like a charm! It's so convenient because no brush or roller cleaning needed after the job's done
Omg... omg..
I was using a paint brush
And it wasnt blending.
But when I used the paper towel as you stated and the blow dryer. And I used the top of the paint can.
This Worked Perfect.
Thank you Sooo Much. 😊
I looked at many videos.
Yours was the one that helped!
Thanks Again.
Hey, did you use this technique over the areas that you had already tried with the paint brush that weren't blending? And if so, did it fix it? You can probably guess I did the same thing as you! lol
As long as it's been under 3 or 4 months, 6 years seems about right?
Your ways of touching up walls is the best, I tried it and it work very good.
This actually works! I attempted to touch up wall closest to ceiling in kitchen with a sponge brush. Disaster for a non professional. Thank you for this tip!
I tried the Paper Towel method to touch up a bunch of holes around the house. It worked flawlessly. You would never know a patch was made, unless of course you really look close, and knew before hand it was there. Thanks for the tip.
Same here.
It worked perfect.
Thank God bc I had tried Everything
Awesome buddy! Great explanation of why mine was shiny and using same paint.
Thank you so much, the paper towel idea is amazing!! I was able to touch up the wall making it look like nothing happened!
Amazing tip! I tried it yesterday and worked fantastic!
I appreciate you explaining the issue and setting up my expectations properly, and then explaining and demonstrating the strat. Thanks
I do have a brush... but I was wondering if the paper towel has better results, I'm impressed. Also, the paint of the apartment that I'm leaving has 5 years old paint, should I bring the piece of colour (wall) and ask for something lighter, because last time I did for my son's room actually it was darker but I did the entire room so didn't matter. Now I have holes to fix and then leave. Thank you for your tricks. Best
I had to fix a small wall area. So I did the wall repair and got the supposed matching color paint from the hardware store on a Saturday. Someone was to visit the house on Monday, since the house was up for sale. I painted the repaired area, but by the time it had dried, the hardware store was closed. This was bad, because it became obvious that the paint color was not a match. It needed a touch of brown to be the same color. What to do ? I mixed a small amount of hot water with some instant coffee. I then added this to the paint. It was a perfect match. The house was sold.
How the hell...
Good Video!!! I started a turnover on a apartment and had the shining of the new paint sticking out like a sore thumb. So, I guess I have to repaint the whole wall.
I Can't thank you enough for this touch-up paint tip. I'm retired and selling my house and trying to save every penny I can. Also want to get the best possible $$$s when I sell my home.
Thanks again
Sanding sponge! If you're like me and came to this video because you've already touched up a spot on the wall only to wonder why the hell the paint doesn't match then check out a sanding sponge.
I tried the above method, but it didn't work. Maybe because the damage was already done. This method only made the effected area bigger. So I grabbed a sanding sponge that I've used many times previously to see if that would help take the shine off-before I go spend money and time repainting a wall. I had nothing to lose since I was going to have to repaint the entire wall anyway. It definitely made a huge improvement. It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb anymore and I won't have to repaint the wall. Someone would have to get really close and be looking for the imperfection to see it now. So, I highly recommend using a sanding sponge-preferably one that's been used before so it's not as harsh on the wall. Hope this helps and good luck!
Paper towel technique worked great for some paint chips I had. Thanks!
Haha I did the paper towel once before. I didn’t know it was actually something I could do. I just didn’t have a brush. Annnd it worked great. 👍🏻.
Amazing. Thank you.
I just moved into an apartment and the movers scraped up the walls and closet doors. The landlord provided me tubs of touch-up paint, but they're not blending - especially the semi-gloss paint.
I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. Uneven. Shiny. Some angles are worse than others. I've been agonizing over it. Now that I know why and what to do about it, I feel so much better.
Seriously, thank you.
abcw That’s precisely why I do these videos. :)
Thank you for making video.
Great tip about the paper towel. rjsongwriter had a great tip about moistening the area 1st too. Thanks guys.
Very good info.. 2 questions... I have a newly built house..What is the absolute best puttying method to eliminate (as best as possible) door casing nail holes after paint? And, my newly built house was just painted. I installed shiplap (Primed and smooth MDF) on the ceiling in 5 rooms. The nails set well and did not pucker the MDF. I told the licensed painter to be very attentive when he presses and wipes the putty because I wanted to avoid any tiny putty gaps putty pits. The goal was to have zero or the absolute minimal visible holes shown after paint. The day after I walked the house and he did a horrible job. Every hole has a tiny gap and is pitted from swipe and had too much pressure... he wants to re-putty and roll over. I am having him mask off everything and re-spray. In your opinion to re-putty after paint and achieve my original goal. The shiplap is a main feature of the home. It was expensive and time consuming and I made sure I left the painter a smooth surface to paint.. It looks bad. Your advice much appreciated. Thanks
I have also added a little water to the paint, maybe using a sponge and feather the edges. Always use the SAME finish!
Less than two minutes into your video and I'm hooked! Subscribed to your page an looking forward to watching more videos, God Bless.
So interesting! Also liked the blow dryer thrown in too,.....never thought of that to dry touch ups quicker being I'm in the middle of touching up door paint right now from trimming off the bottoms of all bedroom door's because we're getting new carpeting and I saw some scuff marks here and there toward the bottom six inch's of the door's and figured I'd do them all now. Very helpful :)
Great tip. Worked great. Thanks so much.
the paper towel tip is great. i'm trying that now, better than the roller so far.
Beautiful job
Thank you for this. I will send this/show my wife so I can stop trying to fix a portion of our wall. I don't feel like painting a long wall with a 9" ceiling so hopefully she is okay with what we have! (Fingers crossed).
I'm no painter but I was able to lessen the standout effect by using a fine-grit sanding-block to 'knock-down' some of the sheen/shine. In my case we purchased the exact paint the contractor used on our home (same color code [a beige], sheen, and product from Sherwin-Williams), but still the new paint was a bit darker after drying. I rolled it on with a 4" roller with a 3/8" nap. I was able to sand the spot and surrounding area VERY VERY lightly to dull the color. Certainly, this reduces some of the texture on the wall but in the areas I did it, it's not noticeable or obvious.
Thanks for your tips!
Great video! I have a dark wall that I want to touch up with the original leftover latex paint. Paint is about 2 years old. Do I need to wet the paper towel before I dab can's lid?
Well i have officially messed up my bedroom wall OOPS 😳😳😂😂
Of course, these people are too afraid to admit it unlike yourself. 👌
What is your recommendations for covering "shine thru" of drywall vertical/horizontal seams that were taped out using PROFORM or DURABOND mixed with standard sheetrock mud?
Ok so does the shine even out with the rest of the wall after 3-4 months? With the technology they have now, I would think they would make specially formulated touch up paint..
Yes tell me about it.
There is no such thing as touch up paint.
I painted my wall bc I got some scuffs in a certain area.
Now you can tell the difference between the new paint and old paint.
I should have just left the scuffs there.
Now my wall looks horrible.
Me too, I want to cry it kept getting worse
Same here. We did some touched up on our living room and the grey color blend so well but our white wall is more mess up. The white wall color just doesn't match.
@@leejmuam1 Try
Using a bald up paper towel instead of a paint brush.
Pat the paint on.
I found this trick on UA-cam it works great. No streaks.
So yall repaint the whole wall lol
This Worked Excellent!
I still use this technique.
The paper towel works great.
You can do the same thing with spray texture if you're adding a little orange peel or knockdown from the can and want it to fade into the existing texture a bit better. Wet the sponge/paper towel a bit if using water-based texture.
Do I need to use the blow dryer for best results?
Can this be done to repaint a small holes that have been filled and sanded?
I would love to know that too!
or if you know how to use a sprayer you can just fade out like a car. Lots of prep time if in a big space might be better to roll again. However in a bathroom or room it is good.
Justs takes a few quick squirts and a very good Spayer.
What a great explanation. I appreciate your expertise
So mad right now. I just did million touch ups from kids scuffing up the wall. Originally painted 3 years ago so it loom like I have a millon spot of different paint. How can I fix it now
This was a great tip, thanks
Tried this yesterday and it left a horrible texture. Maybe my paper towel wasn’t the same?! I have to go back and fix them all again using a different technique 😐
Saw this video last night, tried your method today and it worked like a charm! Thank you 🙏🏻
So do you wet the paper towel or not
So I painted a few spots to touch up scuffs. It's not 100% match but instead of repainted each of the walls ( would be a paint to move furniture and wall mounted things) wouldnt this new paint eventually cure like the previous paint that was on there?
will the touch-up be shiny even if it's matte/flat finish paint?
my flat paint touch up became shiny.. not sure what to do about the flashing
What I see when I look at the wall toward the door after touching up with a roller I see a square. Maybe I should try the paper towel technique. But when I look straight on it matches....I do not want to paint the whole wall. Just finished the downstairs...
Can I do this paper towel method to lose the other color on the ceiling where the painter didn't remove the covering on the flush mount fan that used to be attached?
Can I use the paper towel method on an area where paint chipped off?
Wouldn't the area that you touched up eventually decrease in shine? If the walls after 3 months leveled to a lower shine, why wouldn't the touched up area decrease as well?
I wish the guy who made this video would respond...
Unfortunately when you touch up paint, it will never level out not even years later.
Hi in my estimation older paints blended in better than modern ones . After they dried. What is the component in the paint that makes it solid to cover marks as modern paint does not cover as well ?
I touched up flat paint of my new home and it is flashing! How can I fix flashing of flat paint? With the light entering the home the issue is obvious ):
So will the shine go away and the wall match in a few months?
Won't the new paint eventually lose the shine, too?
I want to know this too.
Thanks! That was helpful! 😊
Which tools did he use?
Handy tip I need to do this in too places I tried this with a dry sponge but it picked up to much paint.
This guy has answered my dilemma that no one has. Gotta paint a whole wall lol
😂
Me too!!
Can I need to use sealer paint first before touch up paint with paper towel.
Oh man I was just in my apartment I hit a wall with the sofa leg
It’s an empty apartment and all I had was a tub of paint a roll of paper towel and some bin liners
If only I saw this earlier
I’m going to head back and touch that up real quick
Gracious
Did it end up working?
How far out should you dab from the area?
Thank you sir
Could I use paint from a spray can with the paper towel?
How do you touch up a level 5 surface?
I could have sworn you have a little French tone when you speak. I'm from Quebec. When you said you're from Moncton, I was proud of myself.
Hmm... what if the paint you used prior was flat matte and there is no shine to it at all? I think you wouldn't be able to tell if a touch up was applied due to no shine.
How you say his name??
What if you live in an old house and the windows go almost from floor to ceiling?!?
awesome tip! thanks!
if you paint one wall corner to corner... won't it make that 1 wall look different (shine) from the other 3 walls?
No
Question - do you have to cut in a wall if you have to roll the wall to hide a patch ? If it was painted within 1-3 months. Or could I get a way with just rolling it?
you are awesome!
Thanks!
Worked great thanks.
What about an airless sprayed flat white ceiling
Moncton NB! Sweet!
Dear GOD thank you for your information.
awesome.
Good thing i watched this...Thanks
I put sugar soap on then got a soft sponge and dabbed it
That looked pretty good. Thank you
I will love to see that on a khaki color
Question? I just painted 2 days ago over a light color with a medium light color...problem is there is some spots that show little spots of old paint color. Can I use the roller to touch up and should I roll just the area or clear up and down?
Apply a second coat.
Love it, thanks for the Tip!!
I just use my thumb👍 to do touch ups.
Thank you! Very helpful!
I just started a carpentry job and I seem to be the only one who really cares about painting and knows how to do it properly...so when I started prepping for touchups in this 3 story house...I was sad that it didn't blend...I've always had fear it would happen but I've never experienced it not working....I feel like the boss's are just gona say good enough in these multimillion dollar homes but I'm like a fucjing paint nazi. They leave paint brushes outside on the ground not covered just everything pisses me off soooo much. I still care about doing a good job and I'm scared to tell the foreman or lead hand we are gkna have to repaint the entire house since people were careless putting multiple Knicks in every room of the house......so I hope to God this works
This is a most helpful video! But I need help fast! I do maintenance at an Assisted Living home with 43 rooms. The place was built about 1 1/2 years ago so its fairly new. However these old folks are merciless on walls with their wheel chairs and also with the grand kids visiting. So my job has been never ending in painting out endless scrapes and pencil and crayon lines on our white hall walls and in rooms. The problem I've encountered is exactly as this man describes. Using the same exact paint as was already here when I was hired, I began going about painting out these thousands of pieces of battle damage. What I have ended up with is hall walls that have hundreds of shiny spots on them where I painted out the damaged areas with the same shade of white paint. The manager has become irritated. I guessed that the original paint was a flat finish latex. But the paint I was then using was a Satin finish paint. So I went and got some Flat finish of this same paint at the nearest Lowes where this paint came from. Even having it matched right off the exact same formula as listed on the original can. Then I tested some walls, painting over these shiny spots. My result was even more horrible than before as this Flat finish paint, (same exact color), is yet a third shade of white! ***I have tried sanding these shiny spots with minimal unacceptable results. The only thing I can think to do is either paint over the entire wall with the shiny Satin paint or over the entire wall with the Flat finish paint. With acres of walls to paint this will be horrendously expensive! I still believe I was correct as this man says, that over a year or so, the original paint on these walls has faded due to sun light and oxygenation to an almost Flat finish. Thus my hundreds of Satin finish touchups look horrible. And also my tests with a new can of Flat finish look equally bad! I now have walls with 3 shades of the same color white paint! What can I do? Any helpful suggestions, please e-mail me at: nevetsnoslen1@gmail.com Thank You! Steve Nelson

That's it. The shine is so annoying I'm gonna hire a professional painter to repaint my entire ceiling edge to edge T.T
you just saved my butt from getting yelled at by my dad
Thank you
Other way when nothing works is to do just a one wall from corner to corner instead whole room.

Lol I found this video too late I was using my hands to smear it in after I had put the paint on with a roller.
Damn! 3 hours too late, I already used a brush and there's a square in the middle of the wall. Should have looked up this video first.
😂
SAME little square over here too!
Me too. lol. Looks like we both have to use the paper towel method. Straigt on looks good but when you look on the side there is a square from the roller.
