Mosuo Women: Inside China's Last Matriarchal Tribe

  • Often called the “Kingdom of Daughters,” the Mosuo tribe in China is the country's last matriarchy, a society where women reign.
    “I will never get married, my generation do not get married,” says Mosuo villager Jiu Duzhima.
    The Mosuo people have been living along the Lugu Lake in China’s Yunnan province for centuries. According to the local government, their current population is about 50,000.
    "Mosuo people belong to one big family," says village tour guide Balu Zhuomayangzong, "All the sisters live with their elder and younger generations, which means 3 or 4 generations live together in the same house is normal here."
    In the Mosuo culture, women are mostly responsible for supporting the family’s needs as well as raising the kids. Kids live with mom’s family and grandmother and maternal uncles raise the kids and support them to go to school.
    The Mosuo people are also known for their practice of “walking marriage” where they meet their partners at a village bonfire party or on the historic bridge that used to connect two villages.
    Balu and her family say they hope to see their Mosuo culture continue down the generations.

      It is the same in other cultures that have preserved the ancient roles of men and women to the best of their ability. In Inuit cultures also, the women do not want to go out into the cold and hunt, though they do make money by selling the products that they make with the meat. It sounds like in the Mosuo world they keep it all at home and share it with their family. They grow the crops, they make clothes, they clean the home, and the men learn a trade to pay for the family's bills and luxuries and hunt and fish for food.

    She said that they're more monogamous, just like the outside world. But I wonder how true that is. How often is it that they have one night stands? How many partners do they have on average in a year? It's not like they just choose one guy and let him climb up to her window for the rest of her life, right? It's not like the father's don't know who they're raising, since they can guess by when she first got pregnant, or is it because they are in a solid relationship?
    I wonder how often is it that a man chooses to stay in her house and just talk to her? Maybe some people think that when he climbs up there he has to have sex. But more than likely, since women are naturally slower, most of the time, at least early on, something more romantic is probably happening than the booty call implied.

    • @SugarMakesMePOP
      @SugarMakesMePOP Місяць тому +1

      The Mosuo people practice serial monogamy. In another documentary I watched, (Zuo, 2007), some of the men described having 3, or 4 relationships in their lifetime. You could compare it to being married 3 or 4 times throughout your life without the formalities. Another Mosuo man said he had only one relationship throughout his life. It's not the same as one-night stands, but who knows there may be exceptions. A Mosuo person wouldn't be intimate with another partner without ending their current walking marriage.
      An interesting part of Mosuo culture is that the woman's brother(s) help raise the kids. The men traditionally live in their mother's homes. Essentially, the uncles have a huge part in raising the children. The biological father would then help raise his own sister's children so he still has responsibility.

    • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790
      @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790 Місяць тому

      @@SugarMakesMePOP Thanks for replying. It was very informative. If that's the case, then they're far more monogamous than what we have in America today. It looks closer to my actual love life than it does the average American.
      In my tribal culture the uncles used to help raise the kids, but it was only the maternal uncle(s). But the children also still lived with the father. I kinda figured that they would pitch in and be the male figure of the children's childhood. It reminds me of how I used to stay over the weekend with my aunts. Sometimes I'm not really sure how much American family members are supposed to pitch in childhood rearing. Certainly the uncles of Mosuo culture take care of their sisters' kids every day.
      I think when I wrote that I was pretty upset with how the narrator was portraying it.

      They are govern by morals this video is too short to even know what is going on, man and woman have to work and their family is for life unlike marriage which makes people poor. In order to survive, they learn to support their blood related family. They see the man as a outsider as they do not share their own blood and the man should assist to help his family bloodline instead of hers. They have such low cases of dna related disease because woman does not not choose man based on their assest or money (due to the woman's child belongs to her instead chooses a man based on his character, health, personality and charisma. They jus feel that love should not be the most important thing in life. Working and sustaining family and they have much freedom in their society. The family unit its assets and property is not diluted and most of them have been to universities in cities and wonder why people are so poor. And their crime rate is so low that they do not even have locks in their homes. No rapes, theft (until tourism arrives) and no one is being put down even if they are homo, plus they can choose to not have sex with anyone too. It is a gender equal society, so after learning them i could sort of understand why marriage is slavery and a form of capitalism. dougales book (i forgot the name)

      There is no such thing as matriarchy anyway you people don't understand the difference between matriarchal society and matrilineal society it is not a matriarchal society it is just a matrilineal society where only grooms go to brides home and women are the providers or head of the family but not the protectors. Men are still protectors and head of the society here people always mix them up patrilineal is not patriarchy and matrilineal is not also matriarchy
