Iconic DIM SUM in Southern Thailand || Favorite Food of 2024 - Hat Yai, Thailand

- For Food and Travel lovers, the southern region of Thailand is truly among the top destinations on planet Earth. For me personally, I consider a combination of Thai food, Chinese food, and Indian/Malay to include all the world's best foods, and in the south of Thailand actually its quite easy to have great versions of ALL these foods without even leaving the central city. The town of Hat Yai would therefore be a top recommendation not just in Thailand, but in all of Asia, and so any chance I have to visit is always going to be supremely exciting.
This trip is a shorter one, but I think we have done well to capture four videos in just the three days here. Each video (hopefully) captures a different aspect of what makes Hat Yai (and Southern Thailand) just so unique in terms of its amazing food diversity, and I have honestly had a lot of fun putting these videos together.
**Obviously in three days, we ate more than just four meals (much more :) so you can trust that I also am picking my favorites even during this one trip! So I really do stand by these dishes, and these meals, as ultimate single meal experiences of a trip to the South.
If you are planning a trip for yourself, I imagine you probably already have "Dim Sum Buffet" on your list - I can say that Krabi town (also Phuket town) would tie for 3rd, Nakon Sri Tammarat a close-runner up (but still 2nd!), but for me its Hat Yai coming 1st, but anyways these would be my picks for THE three towns that need a visit when Food and Travel is dictating the itinerary.
Chok Dee Dim Sum is a great place to have a meal like this, and they took care of us very well today.
Thank you for watching this video, I hope you enjoy all 4 videos in this short series!
LOCATION:
There are now multiple restaurants (branches) with this name in Hat Yai,
find the location we visited for Chok Dee Dim Sum ("Chok Dee Tae Tian")
here, on Google Maps maps.app.goo.g...
PRICES:
Each of these small steamers (called "Keng" in Thai) run from 20 to 35 baht (0.60$US to 1$US), depending on ingredients of course, and there were about 15 different varieties available today.
Hi Joel and Li❤I’ve never seen anyone enjoy each bite of food like you do! Your vocal and facial expressions tell it all! Thanks for adding joy and thankfulness to my day❤
Thank you so much 😁 Mary, a beautiful message for sure. I appreciate the encouragement very much, thank you! Haha THIS place I think is almost easy to get excited, I mean the energy is just so high!!! But yes, I am happy to share my excitement - it is NOT every day we eat like THIS!!!
@@JoelsTastyRide It’s very healthy and nutritional food Joel, added to your exercise and biking lifestyle! Here in the states we tend to go for high calorie fatty foods which are terrible for our health! Added to that we live a high stress and sedimentary lifestyle, hence many are overweight and not as healthy as God meant us to live! I notice the restaurants you visit and the patrons that go there; rarely do I see anyone who is obese yet they at times eat towers of food as you do! The food is small portions of meat and high volumes of vegetables that in addition have medicinal value! God gave us his recipe when he created us, he told us to eat the fish of the sea and the fruit of the land! You and Li are kind and loving individuals who daily give thanks to God for all your blessings and practice your faith with your works!
I’m blessed and grateful to spend time with you and Li!
@@marydiaz6205 Wow. Mary, my goodness what a response! What a blessing!!!!!
Im about to depart on a big trip as we speak, this is just such a great message to read.
I know isn't he great he actually made me hungry (i live in Thailand and im going to get some dim som now😂
Saibaidee Joel! That Dim Sum looked amazing. Dim Sum style Chicken Feet and spareribs always remind me of my grandpa, it was his favorite.
Double greeting to you
Stunning scenery 😊 great video love Dimsum hope you are both well thanks for sharing 🙏❤️🏴x
Have a beautiful Wednesday
Greetings Joel and Group. I loved your Khao Khuha Mountain views. The Dim Sum Feast was just Out of this world. You recreated the KL Twin Towers. Today 14 October is Memorial Day and so many places are closed with respect to the Great King.
Enjoy the rest of the week
Yum Dim Sum!, I never get sick of this my favourite meal on earth 🌎, love it**
Hey good morning :-) I hear you, one of the most unique foods, awesome to hear that you love this one. Thanks for watching the video, good luck, hope to see you again soon.
Morning guys oh I absolutely love the dogs. Have an awesome day and be safe and blessed 😊
Be blessed ❤
Great video definitely gotta put this place on the list next trip to Thailand 👍
Definitely man, I would say HatYai is a must for Thailand, if you’re making say a “Top 5” places to visit. This exact restaurant yes it will deliver, it’s a great experience, but actually there are many many great places to have dim sum in the south of Thailand.
Hai dear Joe and Li.... Thank you for the delicious breakfast. 0:04❤️0:10 like 🐜😄❤0:49❤️1:29❤️2:22❤️ Thank you dears. Have a great week ahead of 💐tc👍
Have a brilliant day
Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 👍
Blessings
I remember that video. Must be a Deja Vu.
Those five canines made my day. And your drone flight have been fantastic, especially while climbing this dangerous terrain. Sure you got hungry. God bless.
Awesome!!
That’s amazing. OK so I wasn’t dreaming :-) yes, this is the full video, what you saw was the quick rough edit OK I forgot that I published it. 😅😅
Wowww Joel- watching this makes me hungry and craving for some dim sum too😊 Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
Blessings
It looks so delicious, Joel. and some of your exclamations sound very similar to Mark Wiens's.
With all due respect, I don't mean to make any comparisons😅 I just really feel that way and it's great too.😊
Thanks for sharing! Cher, I am happy to know that you support my friend, it’s actually kind of cool that you don’t know a previous relationship and you are genuinely commenting on similarities :-) yes, Mark is actually my best friend, not just a friend, so it makes sense 😂
Hi Joel, Li. Li says put it down and back away
Hahahahah David 😀😂💪🏼🤘🏻 star comment as usual, I’m laughing bro. Thank you for that one.
Hi Joel and Yan Lan I love this style of food so authentic, everything looked so gooood, hot and fresh. Those sweet ribs morish😊love you both safe travels ❤
Thanks so much ABigail!!!! as always :) and, I can learn a new word from you today (maybe a local word? or a dish name? what is "Morish?"). happy MONDAY!!!
@@JoelsTastyRide morish .... more and more🤣
Good Morning Joel & Li ... Dim Sum ... you are speakin' my language! So many trips to HK have spoiled me and unfortunately, it's largely unavailable except in the big US cities & the west coast. So many of your southern Thai Dim Sum dishes are different from the traditional HK Dim Sum dishes. The orange dipping sauce looks quite enticing ... now your desire for the orange sauce recipe will be bugging you! Good on you Joel ... seems like you "ran the board" on all the available selections - no need for rice to fill you up LOL. It was sure nice to be able to join your livecast today (yesterday your time). I wish you safe travels to China and am already looking forward to that great content. Peace be with You & have a Blessed week!
Ron! Good morning man, and what a morning it is - Happy Monday! Peace be with you as well, thank you man. So of course last night great to see you, I always get to say hi to you EVERY week on these comments (thanks for another one today) - but look at this! I mean all great streaks will some day be broken, but now I wish I would have kept track of yours (because surely it was/is the current record!! haha I wonder by how many seconds this guy snuck past you today... Oh! I get it, your message definitely took more than 60 seconds to type, I guess his two-word comment was much quicker :)
Thanks again for everything man, yes I am very excited for both Taiwan and China, super excited. Besides Thailand these are definitely my favorite countries favorite places to visit right now, I cannot get enough of new-ness and learning from either of them.
@@JoelsTastyRide I was just lucky to come upon your livecast ... my condo had some hurricane damage and as such, the condo gym has been closed for repairs ... not being able to go & work-out, I was blessed to be able to join your livecast. Blessings 🙏
Hello Joel & Li. ❤ Dim Sum. Everything looks delicious as always.
Do the dogs in Thailand bite? I was so afraid of getting close to the strays in SEA.
Hi Christine :-) cheers as always thank you for the nice comments and for the full support every post every video. About the dogs, you can imagine there is not a single bike ride I do without at least one dog, for example today maybe I would say 50 or 60 dogs… I could say maybe 10 times ever has a dog been aggressive to me. So that’s maybe 10 out of 500,000 encounters? And I have not been bitten one time.
Sending love and blessings to you, Li and family!🌈
YAHOO Tiare gooooood morning good morning, I love to see that rainbow!!
That was one big meal, but looked sooooo good, I would have liked to been there to try it with you guys, you and Li enjoy together 😄

Hey hey good morning everyone!
Haha YUM could very well be an action, a verb, awesome Billy and HEY man good morning!
For me the Vancouver airport is a place I have visited many many times... and never anything else. So, someday, haha someday :) I do have two friends who ride bikes in that city, they always show it off in gorgeous photos, so I know what is waiting!! Just havent made it yet :)
@@JoelsTastyRide the trip would be a dim sum heaven kinda event Joel.. world class for sure then all the Various Hotpot joints too *placing Har Gow and Sui Mai’s in strategic places to lure the elusive Boss Li & Joel.. and the kicker a Home Brewed Chili oil with Duck Egg Yolks .. all from Scratch .. just name the dates and I’ll arrange the scheduling 😉🤤😋
Love! Blessings to you two❤️
YAHOO! Tara yes! So good! Great to see your name, so many good memories over the years... of support and shared encouragement. Thanks for the message today!!!
wait I thought Dim Sum was noodles , I know you have said DIm Sum of the best noodles I have ever ate in some of your videos !! LOL !!
Benny! WHOA. Now wait a minute here, haha because Im no expert.... but you may have accidentally come up with something great here?! Maybe? But, you gotta try it first (because it will be very messy until its perfected... noodles in a steamer basket :) - Hey hey good morning man, thank you for the messages! Super cool to see you here, hour #1 of this new video!!
I love Dim Sum so much, bat what I have seen the Thai Dim Sum is very different to the Chinese an Taiwan Dishes
Huto, I think that’s a good point. I think of this as the norm now but I guess you’re right, that’s because for me, Thailands dim sum is what I know for dim sum.
That taro bun sure looked fantastic!
So good! JK, cheers, I hope you are having a great day (maybe a great breakfast coming soon?) - thanks for the message!!
I made sweet potato curry this weekend and used the can of green curry paste and it was spicy and good .. saved a bit for later LOL !! you need to come down here to western kentucky so I can show you some of the BBQ places I already know which one would be your favorite LOL
Wonderful Benny man haha I can say that is a plan worth executing :-) someday, someday. Just for fun just to share a personal memory, actually I have been to Kentucky. I’ve stayed there about two weeks, I came for a friends wedding in 2005. It was the end of the first year, living back in the USA… coming from Kenya, to study in Michigan.
Wow man, southern Thailand looks totally breathtaking. Mmmmmm dim sums look so good. Thanks for sharing bro, much love , godbless and Shine On 🙏✊💯🍻🇦🇺❤
So good to see you Caleb back to back haha (well actually on IG you left 2 messages!!! so triple time right here!) - man, Southern Thailand indeed is THE place for food, I might even argue its one of the top for the whole Earth... but anyways Northern Thailand is ok too
Always good to see you man, and I do appreciate the constant steady reminder - SHine ON. Its always worth it.
Hi Caleb ... nice to see you again. Be Blessed!
@@JoelsTastyRide Haha yes bro I'm making a comeback , I think Thailand is the 2nd best place in the world man.
@@superfastener cheers mate, hope all is well with you also. 👍
Yowza! I've never seen such a stack of Dim-Sum! Lucky you! Way down south and out of the rain and floods! YAAAY! Mikey & Rebbie shout out too! My fave Dim_sum in Chiang Mai is Toey Dim-Sum at the south end of Soi Khampeng Din (earth wall ally . ) We'd go almost weekly for a while, used to be 10BHT a set! I pray that they are recovering, they are deep in the flood zone. So fun and busy at a Dim-Sum place that's affordable! Toey has a different colored sauce, if I recall, not as many selections. The nature there looks amazing! I need to learn more about the geology but I think it's more limestone Karst.
Don man! Goooood afternoon!! I am about to roll out (out of town), just checking what messages are left here. Thanks as always for taking time to write, today thanks for the recommendation when I get back to Chiang Mai as well. Sounds good!!
Hat Yai is an area Ive not been to, Think I'll head there and then take train down to KL
Man! Thank you for all the messages right now and all the support. I have done this train, I did it in 2010 so hopefully nowadays the train might go a little bit faster? I think it was 14 hours from BKK to HatYai, and then a 17 hour trip from HatYai to KL.
Thankyou for the video, always awesome to see my province Songkhla! I was born there ❤❤
My pleasure 😊 Trin, so cool to hear this!!! Thanks for the message, Songkhla really is such a special place, what a great place to call home!
Great views
Thanks a bunch man, I hope you are ready for a solid week of LIFE and all that this entails.
Hi bro. Joel, wow awesome dim sum, it is not right to go there without me😭just kidding, some of this dim sum I never try😪🤤enjoy my bro. and sis.

Hey Joel, which hill did you guys hike up to?
Hey Noel! Thanks very much for the message.
Of course I did say it in the video many times but... ;-D this area is "Khao Ku Haa"
@JoelsTastyRide sorry Joel.....i might have missed it as i didnt have my earphones on earlier 😅
Noel! No no man, my bad! Totally. Sorry about that :) We made an entire video of just the hike! Its on the other channel, we've just started a 2nd channel and its kinda so new that I even forgot about it :) hahahaha. Man, sorry about that!!! Yes so, next step is inviting you to watch that video :)

3am?! What time did you go to bed?! 😂
Kakabsat! Good morning!!! Yes for this day of work we did wake up at 3, maybe even 245? But on a normal day I wake up anywhere from 430 to 6, depending on the training/ride schedule.

What happened to the dogs , did you take them to the meat market?
Hi Beast! Super
Super cool to see you, yes, we did pass a meat market, but in the south of Thailand, dogs are not usually eaten. Interesting question!!

Why don't married couple's wear wedding rings anymore? Are they getting too expensive? I always think it's such a nice symbolic way of showing a partnership between two people, but these days I notice married people don't tend to bother😊
Hey Brooke! Thank you for the message. Thanks for the question. :-) yes, I definitely have a wedding ring (we both do) I never take it off. I love my ring! But in general, OK in this part of the world people can also wear other types of jewelry, exchanging rings is only the tradition of a few countries, I’ve learned that over the years… In Thailand, for example (the weddings I’ve attended) the groom presents a gift of gold to the wife’s entire family, which usually includes a gold ring (which the wife will obviously keep, but maybe not wear daily)
Seems like your trying to mimic Mark Wien's even down to his facial expressions and mannerisms you would be better if you stuck to your own style and not his!
Hi Vera!
You enjoy Pearl Jam? I hope you will come back for more of these videos. Thank you so much for defending my friend - I also love watching Marks videos - he is the best, it’s true! Thanks for writing today
