  • Project: Brinda House
    Typology: Stand-alone House
    Location: Coimbatore, Tamilnadu
Design Firm: Arun & Associates, Coimbatore
Communicating the idea of abstraction, this residence is conceived as a simple, cubical parametric façade with volumes that melds its shape and design with nature.
Designed on an “Outside-In” concept, the home is planned as a sequence of spaces that would slowly reveal themselves in transition. Each space is designed as an amalgam of manmade and natural elements, characterised by an emphasis on essential elements such as materiality and light.
Enhancing the proximity to nature, the public spaces flow into the private garden outside by means of a smooth material transition and the creation of transparent barriers using floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. Opening of these doors enables the crafting of a single large seamless space that can be used for celebratory events.
The Royale Play International Designer Collection renders a minimalistic, muted palette that echoes the simplicity of the exteriors and interiors, marked by an intense contrast created between the white walls, the white ash wood and the black riverbed frosted granite flooring. The exteriors boast a raw, concrete look.
The interiors are designed to communicate the idea of abstraction that is reinforced by the skylights in the ceiling. The skylight above the open Sanctum Sanctorum (Pooja) washes the wall with ample light that adorns the deities. This wall sports the Royale Play Archi Concrete in distressed effect, which vividly elevates the earthy material into an expression of high design with the boldness of unfinished stone. This plaster possesses an extremely soft yet vibrant effect. Very Italian, this is a rough finish that brings to mind the character of cement. A cantilevered staircase wall painted in white and beige tones from the Royale Play Designer Collection, which is a mineral plaster coat in powder, selected to ensure an excellent workability. It brings privacy to the otherwise open dining and the space underneath doubles up for storage. The first floor is punctuated by a small court lined with pebbles, adorned in a white palette.
Conceived as a simple, cubical parametric façade with volumes that bring together the shape, design and structure, an overall attempt has been made to efficiently use the site, its orientation, and spatial planning.
