Newer f150s are monsters, but the lightning is just so damn sexy
That ten speed makes a huge difference, my 02 lightning bone stock ran 13.58 but that was a perfect launch/conditions. It would run average 13.8
10 speed makes a difference, but a bolt on Coyotes ability to make well over 400 rwhp N/A with a wide rev range (avg Hp) also makes a difference
What do they weigh? 4,800 😱. I bet the 4wd adds 200#. The silver 2001 a lot lighter. At 10hp per 100# Old 🏭 limit. 480hp = most 2,800# turbo 4cyl. 2COOL

@@BC08 So does the four wheel drive launches. He practically perfected it in his previous truck that he wrecked. My major issue with my old lightning was always traction. And like you said the new Coyote is so tunable with easy bolt ons. I have a 2015 5.0 F150. Cold air intake, throttle body and full borla exhaust added a little bit of pep. It's my work truck and a chariot for my little girls so I won't go much past that probably. Maybe a tune 😈🤘
@@BC08 stock coyotes.from the g3 family are making 400hp stock.. and the 10sp has lower parasitic loses than the 4 and 6sp..

I want a v6 version of the lightning body style. So I can coyote swap it. The old 5.4 just doesn't make the power of the Coyote, and certainly isn't as receptive to even minor upgrades. It's a no win for the old mods.. I mean, a 5.4 dohc navigator engine can make 330 no problem, but keeping it together might be a little tricky with boost, and such. However, 5.4 dohc engines are much cheaper. downside is that people are figuring out how to make big numbers on the navigator engine and supply is running down.
The biggest problem with the new F150 is that it’s a mile off the ground. The Lightning doesn’t stand a chance unless it isn’t stock but the lowered all around look is so cool. That Coyote with a 10spd is fast tho. When we wanted a new Lightning, that’s what we wanted, not some appliance that doesn’t make any noise and can’t drive more than a few hours at a time.
I ran an 01 lightning up until 6 years ago. It ran 13.2s consistently--hard to believe that one is 500hp. Anyhow, new tech is hard to beat--but that lightning is a beautiful truck..
Love seeing the new progression since I wasn’t following during the original Undertaker build. Making me want to trade in my 13 crew cab 5.0 for a single cab.
Great points and questions I hadn't thought of on the new Lightning.
I will say this, living in Houston during the last hard freeze with no power for almost a week, my F150 wasn't the only one on the road but after the first day with no power, didn't see a Tesla (or any EV) until 2 days after the power came back on and temps got back in the 30s.
If you go to 5:34 and put it in .25 x playback speed you can see the tire break loose really well on the lightning! It’s really cool to watch
That truck sings a great tune with that new exhaust😍 Who could remotely imagine a basic work truck toting a 7,000 rpm factory V8 before the awesome 5L Coyote came along !!

The EV “Lighting” is not a bad truck it’s just the range and the layover to wait for it to charge! It’s never going to be as efficient as fossil fuels until the power is self generating.
I had higher expectations for the new Lightning Joe. I’m sure it’s a good truck. But’s it’s not the legend that the SVT Lightning is. It’s not a sport truck in any way. It’s a crew cab F150 that happens to be an EV.
Not everyone takes trips and thats the only argument you have. And if someone were to take a trip all they have to do is plan the trip. Not a big deal.
@@xxZerosumxx My philosophy about EV charging delays on road trips is that while that is a negative, it is easily offset by the fact you plug in at home and never waste time going to gas stations to fill up otherwise. Weekly (or more often) gas runs do eat up a lot of time and I'm a sucker for buying extra stuff when I'm there.
@@busslayer4790 When I take a trip with my tesla, I plan my stops ahead of time. I stop, charge and by the time i come out of the store 15 minutes later its given me over 100 miles. Its only a chore for people who have never owned an EV and only spew hearsay.

My 01 lighting Had full bolt ons from JDM freehold, NJ. Just messing around on street tires I managed to run 13.2. That was with major traction issues and my rookie butt driving. But that was decent numbers back in 2003. The truck could have probably ran high 11 low 12 with slicks.

Lightning is definitely not 500rwhp with that trap speed and e.t. Maybe 420rwhp-440rwhp. Factory eaton, looks like a factory upper, jlp intake and probably a 4lb-6lb lower pulley.

I have a 2011 150 King Ranch 5.0 and a 2012 Prius and a 04 PTGT. The Performance of the Prius drops off considerably in the cold 40 degrees and below. The milage/distance drops, add rain and it drops even more. I am just saying that the numbers you are hearing about the new Lightning will be a lot lower when towing and in the cold/rain/snow.

Don't try to boost the numbers up for the lightning. With bolt ons (intake, exhaust, 6# pulley) they make around 430 rwhp.

Yes! Finally somebody telling it like it is! I’m a Ford guy but the new “Lightning” is underwhelming to say the least. No real performance enthusiast should be excited about a EV of any kind at this point. I’m very aware of their performance potential. I’ve ridden in a Tesla and they are fast. But they are not fun in my opinion, and that’s not even considering the lack of range. Ford should make a regular cab, short bed, two wheel drive F150 with the Godzilla available as a regular production option, common truck, like the Ram 1500 classic express with the hemi. That would be a relatively cheap performance truck just about everybody could get in to. Then make a supercharged Godzilla lightning version in regular cab and crew versions. I know EVs are going to take over unfortunately. I think it’s inevitable, but there’s no reason to embrace or rush it at this point. Just my opinion

@@lilcam-qk9mp It could be pretty cheap too if they wanted it to be. I’m talking about taking the exact same Godzilla out of the super duty and putting it in a base model F150 with the 10 speed auto already behind the coyote. Just make only the absolutely necessary minimum changes to the engine and trans to keep costs down. Then there’d be way more Godzilla’s in circulation and it would get more attention from the aftermarket and hopefully live up to its potential. Let me add though as a life long Ford fan, I think the chance of Ford doing anything like what I described above is very low. Ford has a long history of building good engines and then stopping production of them and starting over with another platform before the first had a chance to live up to its potential. In my opinion Ford could not care less about aftermarket performance than they already do. If it doesn’t equal more new car sales in an amount they care about, then they won’t even consider it no matter how much sense it makes to a performance oriented gear head like me.

@@lilcam-qk9mp agree it definitely needs to go in the mustang and there should have been a turbo “ecoboost” version of the coyote years ago. The last Ford GT super car should have had a twin turbo “ecoboost” 5.2L coyote, but oh no, not Ford. Ford says “let’s put a 3.5L econo car V6 engine in a $500K plus super car”. The last GT could have been a world beater, but instead in my opinion it was kind of a joke.
Sorry but that Eaton bolt on Lightning is Not putting down 500 to the wheels. That's BS plain and simple. His trap speed says it, low to mid 400's at best...
Yeah, might put down close to 500 rw on a dyno when iced down or with inlet retards disabled but with real world inlet temp retards probably mid-low 400s. Pretty common with Eatons…
@@BC08 real common. I've owned a few 01, 02, 04. The stock rods are the weak link 500 is venting the block territory. Shame when it happens, forged crank and a seasoned block is a good start for a build.

Agreed. Upper was stock, idlers looked stock. Probably a 4lb lower with a mild tune. No way was that a full bolt on truck, or anywhere near 500hp for that matter.
Agree, no idler pulley for the 4lb lower spotted, and stock throttle body and stock maf. Probably just a intake and tune. With increase of at least 4psi more of boost you need a bigger maf

Yeah, no way. Stock intake, except for the air box, stock Eaton blower, stock plenum, stock MAF, stock throttle body. Probably not tuned. 500hp at the crank maybe. No way that has 500 to the tires.
Yea hit it on the head with that mileage on the ev f150 and I've seen a couple tesla videos where they did a road trip and something that would take 12-13 hrs becomes a two day event smh and remember those charging stations are far and few in between over here on the east coast so you can't just stop off at any exit that says fuel and food

@@royrichardson9164 thats why im keeping mine mostly stock(intake, exhaust, VB), lightning are not fast with stock anything. Upgrade the S/C and you'll need an engine soon after. Upgrade the shitty connecting rods n you'll be cockblocked by the heaton, upgrade both you'll need a fuel system and the trans will see itself out. There is no easy(cheap) way to make them fast.
The Lightening has 300 miles at what speed? I’m not going to drive 300 miles at 60mph!
6 more gears, far better volumetric efficiency, lighter, wider track, faster gear shifts, longer spent in optimal powerband, better tuning, and a driver that knows what his truck should be able to do. It's not a big surprise the f150 beat the lightning. Even if the lightning should have had more torque, the newer truck manages that power better. And it proves that old school can't just line up for a win with the new kids.

Just watched the other half of this with stangmode.
I had all tbe same feels about that 2022 Lightning. It's just not the same, and going to be much worse in winter or towing. But Ford is FULLY committed to the Mustang E and now E-Lightning.
The only cool part is the truck and charger can power a house during a power outage. 🤷🏻♂️
After powering the house overnight how are you going to get to work.(if the power is still out)
@@patrickallen1338 Work is probably not open if there is a large scale, multi day outage. Hopefully people are smart and don't try to power the entire home, just the essentials, then the truck will get charged when power is restored. Their employer has power again and life continues.

I have a 2000 Lightning with a JLT CAI, and I did 13.9 in my backstreets. That Lightning has a a lot more in it. Most def in the 11’s.
Yeah, somthing isn't adding up. I had a 2000 lightning with JLT intake, 6lb lower, factory tech valve body and a few other things. I could consistently pull off 104 mph trap speeds. All of the work claimed on this lightning isn't adding up imo
What isn't adding up? Dorian said full bolt on, which you can see it isn't. So forget he said full bolt on. He said pulleys, tune, suspension and a little exhaust. So with a 4-6lb lower that's a 104-108mph ish truck in the south where I live. He isn't on a tire. So I see zero issues with how the Lightning ran.
Lightning is old lol, the fact that a naturally aspirated f150 is beating it this bad proves my point. The eaton blower on this trucks is a POS.

Wheels added some rotational weight plus at the track I have more traction than I need, so with that much traction and the stock converter it lugs the engine down on the launch vs on the street where I can get a little wheel speed on the launch

One of the fastest Lightning in my area about years ago with a stock engine and heads. Ran 12.00’s at 113 mph. Ported blower, race gas, 60 lbs inj, weld race wheels on drag radials, stage 2 cams, accufab tb, cold air, dual 255 pumps, heat exchanger, 2.81 blower pulley and a 6 lb lower, long tube headers, Borla exhaust, custom SCT tune. That’s a lot of mods for the time. The new coyote truck is superior to the aging Lightning. I owned a Lightning myself, recently sold it and bought a 2020 F-150 5.0😎

My stock 2018 6000 plus lb raptor almost beat a lightning. If I would of been cold down I would do beat him. Lightning were fast in there day these new trucks they just can’t compete

I've always loved that 10th gen body style. I still own an '02 supercrew FX4. It needs some boost.
I dont know WHY Ford didnt make a single cab short bed Ranger!?!? NO companies do anymore its all split cab or 4 door. I got the crew cab 2021 ranger its nice to have back seats with good room. But i sure like a single cab short bed for performance or off road. Thats where my beautiful 92 Toyota 4x4 standard cab short bed 3.0 v6 5 speed comes in.
If they did, it would eat into f150 sales. Especially if people start doing a 2.7 swap in the ranger. Ford would make a killing offering.a 2.7 standard cab short box ranger. It would eat everything on the street with a little tuning..
