    We love watching your adventures and stumbled across them whilst contemplating on getting our first campervan. Eager to see your next one with an update on the Nugget. Our kids are obsessed with it and we’ve run out of videos to watch on here now!!!

      Hi Chris, thanks for watching our adventures and good to hear you are thinking of buying a camper - as you can tell, we love it....the best type of vehicle we have ever bought and the kids love it! Your timing is perfect, as tonight we release our latest video - "Order Time!" for our Nugget. Tell us what you think, but my guess is that your kids will be wanting one even more!

    I think you put that story together really well and we all got to experience the dilemma you face. We had caravans for 25 years and then we discovered campervans. We have had more fun in our tiny van in one year than all those years in the caravan rolled together. Why ? - freedom, freedom from campsites, the ability to wild camp and the ability to go down roads we would never dream of with a caravan. A motorhome is a caravan with the engine inside. Its size is a trap just waiting to limit your adventures. I think you can already tell we think the Nugget is the right van for you and as you say they are built to last not sit on the drive for the vast majority of its life or the campsite because you can never park it when you want to. Follow your gut feeling as its always the right thing to do. Whatever way you jump we love your adventures 👍

      Life is too short wow, fantastic points and lovely comments guys. You made me laugh with saying you got to ‘experience’ the dilemma - in other words we are sharing the burden of our problem! 😂 Your comment about “a motorhome is a caravan with the engine inside” hits the nail on the head and describes it very well. The point about Freedom is also a big one - just heading anywhere you like without feeling restricted or maybe ‘antisocial’ with a big vehicle. We in particular will be compromising space when buying the Nugget, but it is the only major compromise. The otherway around gives us a whole different ball game of compromises, and as you say, it is about levels of fun too! Our gut feeling is to go with the original plan - Nugget Plus here we come! Glad you enjoy our adventures (as we do yours in your fab NV200), 👍🏻 thanks for watching, brgds J,J,H,I&P.

    I concur. Life changes though, especially as kids grow up. We had three kids, now down to a 17 year old and a doggo. You have to do what is right for you, at the time and the best fit with your wants and needs.

    I was interested in the Nugget also, but the price in the UK is absolutely outrageously eye watering. For the price, you can have a top van conversion from Hymer, Adria, Knaus etc. Pop top with 5.5m length isn’t that long. Appreciate the market for 5 travelling seats is limited. Check out the Malibu Van First Class. Separate bedroom is amazing!

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  2 роки тому +1

      Good question. There are draw backs too, of course. But the main advantages are 1. Quieter, both when parked and on the road 2. Temperature regulation is easier 3. You can always stand up 4. Camping is discrete, important of at the side of the road, for example. 5. No worries about storms/the wind etc. Hope that helps!

    I had a basic berlingo style camper and I finally upgraded to a ducato based van conversion. Parked up it is amazing! So luxurious and with an "en suite" better than my home. It's 6m long and has a brilliant fixed bed with a proper mattress. The downside is that is a real pain to drive and I really struggle in little european villages. I'm thinking of downsizing again now because I'd just get more use out of it. My compromise will be a drive away awning I should think. I love the little nugget but it costs a crazy price in the UK. Happy hunting!

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      Ruby Mouse thanks for your thoughts on this, and you highlight the advantages of a smaller venicle well. And, it sounds like you are willing to compromise the extra space with your 6m van by dropping down in size again. Interesting that that you use the bigger van less than you thought you would due to the day to useability (and it being more of a headache to nip into town/park). Like you say, parked up is amazing, but then we can’t have everything and there is always a compromise! Many thanks for watching and commenting. Nugget, here we come! 😃

    We agonised for a year before buying our Cali, and even now we wonder whether we would be better off in a Motorhome with a toilet and shower. But the factors that swung it for the Cali still hold true. It’s only 5 metres long so we can park it on our drive. The build quality is so much better and the driving experience is better. We often average up to 40 mpg, whereas with a M/H we would only be getting 25-27 mpg.
    But then, there’s only 2 of us (plus our little dog)!

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      Hi Trevor, the word ‘agonised’ well describes this conundrum! Mostly, you feel pleased as punch with a campervan and then you admire the guy’s Motorhome next door for its simplicity when parked up. Then you remember you can park outside the Co-op, drive happily in the outside lane of the motorway and have a more car like driving experience. Then, on a rainy day you wish you had the u-shaped lounge and big integrated garage! We cannot win, but for us (and probably you too) the camper has a feel good factor and puts more of a smile on our faces...and that matters! We may have to go to a motorhome in the future, but until then the Nugget should deliver very well. Thanks for commenting and watching, Jordan.

    Good discussion. We have a Ducato conversion and we totally agree with you concerning the poor comfort and refinement over long distances, not to mention the uncool 'old folkes home' venacular inside. Our solution is to plan to convert our nearly new jumbo Transit ourselves as these vans seem to mostly share the driving refinement of the Nugget. Incidentally; if we were less old and creaky we would definitely buy the Nugget. Hope you enjoy yours and happy travels.

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      Yes, it is amazing that these vehicles are designed to be used for road trips and the driving refinements are often overlooked by the industry, it doesn't make sense. Yes, the Ford base vehicles are one of the class leaders in equipment levels and comfort so the Jumbo Transit should be a good basis. We can't wait to take delivery of ours! Good luck with the conversion, J.

    Because the Ford nugget plus was not available at that moment we decided to buy a Hymer Sydney. It has 5 seats and its a short car , only 496 cm long, 205 cm wide and 235 high. With plenty of room. Its a pop top and the upper bed is very large. 210 x 150. We also use it as our daily car. We drove 30000 km in 2 year without any problem . The Hymer Sydney is a good alternatif for the Ford nugget.

      We were lucky to find a beautiful Nugget Plus with pop top roof and we love it!. The camper has automatic gear and 185 hp engine, thats super!
      The roofbeth is very comfortabel. And we don't need an extra topper like in the Sydney. Dispite of the loss of our stolen camper we are very happy with the Nugget.

    Great video, had similar thoughts as you but came to same conclusion. For now it suits our family of 4 to stick with current set up (a VW T6 4 berth conversion) and maybe change to nugget or VW equivalent in medium term and perhaps a motorhome in future.

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      Hi Alex, interesting that there is always a compromise somewhere. However, a T6 is a super nice vehicle and is genuinely useable day to day, especially as you are 4 in your family. As time goes on, the way you like to use a vehicle and the amount of time you use it for holidays/number of nights away often changes. For us, it has been an upward trend so having a little bit more space (5 of us) and an onboard toilet has seen us move from the Cali to the (pending) Nugget Plus. Good luck with the adventures! Jordan.

      Peter Waugh hi Peter, they are few and far between in the UK. They have been officially launched in the UK but not at all normal Ford Dealers. Usually, Ford Commercial Centres, and some are on the same site as the normal Ford car dealerships. Apparently Hendy Ford in Eastleigh has one in to see and are taking orders (according to one of our viewers comments). The Nugget range is all available through Ford only as it is Ford’s brand name. Some dealers might say they have never heard of it. In which case, they haven’t done their homework! Brgds, J.

We are not as fussed about the kitchen as cook outside anyway, so have the Beach and it’s awesome. For now we can all fit inside to sleep....in the future maybe some will have to be the drive away awning...but also soon I’m expecting the eldest to be wanting more personal space for changing etc. But if want the kitchen, short a sprinter conversion (and even then hard to find 5) you only really have the Nugget....surely there are lots of families of 5 in this predicament!

    We have a VW Coast and mostly when we go away with our wee grand-daughter we pull-up at beach car parks/forest parks etc., which have a height barrier, but as ye know, we can just slip under them. But, if we could afford to change we would definitely go for the Ford Nugget. We love the layout but would prefer the one with the elevating roof so we could continue getting under barriers (that's what suits us). We are no experts, so we would not be confident driving a 7m motorhome and it seems more safe to travel with your family of five in the Nugget. Best of luck whatever ye decide. 🙂

    Hi there, been watching your videos with great interest. Only just picked them up. with regard to the Giotti versus the Nugget. How is the upper bunk accessed?, presume that there is a ladder? The toilet is fine-ish but there is no shower and with three adventurous children like yours that may be a problem. but then again not if you are on a campsite of course. The upper bed in the nugget is a winner for the children but your bed takes a bit of putting together but as it is all about being out camping that is livable with. The third passenger seat on the Giotti is a no-goer for us. Storage in the Giotti is far more generous but it is down to the camping ethic again i.e. a couple of sports bags etc. Go on then.....go for the Nugget. For our end we are two old retirees who live in SW France and travel with our two cats in an Adria Coral Axcess 670 SL. Enjoy your travel and stay safe.. Glenys and Fred Chase.

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      Frederick Chase hi Frederick, thanks for watching our videos! The upper bunk has a half ladder that allows you to climb up on to the kitchen worktop and then hop into the top bunk. Works better than it sounds! The shower is on a trailing pipe and you can then open the rear tailgate and shower under it. Not ideal in various circumstances but can be made fun and at least there is option, especially for sandy feet at the end of the day. Our bed will take a bit of putting together, but it is no worse than we are used to with our California....like you say, it does have that camping ethic which we do enjoy. The extra seat in the GiottiLine was simply not safe enough. We have gone for the Nugget and can’t wait! The Coral is a lovely motorhome, we like Adria’s, their build quality and their use of fabrics and colours. In particular, the swooping roof line and skylights looks awesome. Enjoy you travels around 🇫🇷 France, best wishes from 🇮🇹 Italy...😎

    Good video guys. 👍🏼
    As you were already intimating...the Giotto motorhomes as good as they are did not tick some of your most important boxes.
    First and foremost being the children and the fact that the ‘5th’ seat was in no way safe, comfortable nor enjoyable for Holly to travel in (not to mention her being apart from her sisters). The Nugget has them all sitting together allowing them to chat and have fun during your journeys. Secondly, not a great vehicle to pop down to shops in as opposed to the Cali (or the Nugget) plus far larger to drive on some of those beautiful, scenic (but narrow) roads in your part of the world.
    The upper bed in the Nugget is massive and ideal for the girls fur many years to come and very safe as you know they are up above with you down below.
    Anyway, all the best in your next ‘van’ purchase and I look forward to seeing what you decide on. Would love to get back to Italy soon (as we drove from Loch Lomond to Venice and back last year) but as for everyone, Covid-19 has just quashed any dreams of a return visit in the near future. ☹️

      Three’s a Crowd hi Paul. Thanks for the comments and it is good to hear your thoughts. All your points are spot on, and they summarise the issues with the motorhome and are in line with our conclusions. Your point about Holly being seperated during travel is a good one too, not fun for her. Yes, Italy has plenty of small scenic roads / historic villages etc and we don’t want to buy something that is going to restrict our adventures. The compromise of less space in the smaller Nugget is looking like a small price to pay! And, we also think the top bed will be good enough for all 3 girls together, glad its just not us thinking that. Wow, Loch Lomond to Venice.... now that’s our kind of road trip, love it! Best regards, J,J,H,I&P.

    Great video.... I work for the ambulance service we run Fiat, Mercedes, Renault and Ford..... The Fiat's are awful to drive always off the road, broken down, so I would never but a Fiat camper. Fiat stands for...... Fix It Again Tomorrow .

      Yes, the Ford is fairly refined and car-like in comparison. Fiats seem over due for an improvement. We’ve covered almost 9k km since June and it is a joy to drive. Thanks for watching and commenting on our videos!

    I'd also rather go with nugget plus. It is very well put together and easy to drive around due to its size. They fit worlds into a such small car and managed to make wide area inside the car as well. Good choice!

    This one doesn’t excite us at all, really don’t like that 5th seat, doesn’t seem safe for Holly.
    We think the Nugget is a much better option for you. We have a California, but sadly yours is too small now for your three growing girls. It’s done you proud, we hope you enjoy the Nugget or whatever you choose as much as you have the California.

      Gillian H thanks Gillian, and you’re right about the seat for Holly, just not safe enough and it is surprising that the manufacturers decide to bring this to market. Nice to hear you have a California...what a vehicle! Best decision we ever made at the time. Now, like you say, we have more than outgrown it. It has seen us through lots of adventures and will be missed. Fingers crossed the Nugget delivers as the bar has been set high! Many thanks for your comments/thoughts, Brgds, Jordan and family.

      Olga Clarke hi Olga, and yes, thanks for mentioning it. It is such a new development that little was seen of it until the Caravan Salon this week, so we have only just found out about it. We are going to see one on Saturday at the Parma Camper Show, 🇮🇹 Italy...we’ll report back on the channel after we see it....looking forward to it! Brgds, J.

      Guys. Just seen a video of the 2020 Affinity camper. Many similarities to the Nugget but with a surprising twist. Not sure if 5 seater though. Worth a look.

      @@robclarke4963 thanks Rob, what an awesome camper van. Enjoyed watching 'Alan Heaths' video of it thanks to your recommendation. Great to see fresh ideas, high build quality and innovation....those front seats that transform into bunks are awesome! Shame it hasn't got a 5th seat though. Thanks for commenting, J.

      ohh nei, just checked, the Grand Cali is only 4 seats 🙄

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому

      @@tomcatave this is the problem. You would think the 'Grand California' would offer us what we need, but it actually can carry less passengers than the normal Cali...I asked about this, and the Grand California has been homologated for 4 passenger seats only, so we can't legally put the 3 seats back into the cab either. All the best, J.

      Cali Camper Family Thanks for this - and thanks for an enjoyable video. We’re with you on the Nugget Plus, and we’re keen. Are you based in the UK? We’ve asked Ford UK directly about availability, and they’re being a bit vague...

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 роки тому +1

      Robert Fenner hi Robert, we are based in Italy and our Nugget has been ordered from the Ford Main Dealer in Milan. However, I have heard of some Ford dealers in the UK being vague about a lot of the details as regards the Nugget. Some dealers have never even heard of one. If the Ford dealer in question has a commercial vehicle section, they should be better clued up. However, as you may know, the Transit is built in Turkey, and then transported to Germany for the the Westfalia conversion. Both plants were closed for at least 1 month during Lockdown, and the Motorhome and Camper van industry demand has rocketed. Normally, a 3 to 4 month lead time is what we understand, but this is of course likely to be longer at the moment. We can’t wait and we highly recommend one based on our research and experience with Campervans. All the best, Jordan.

    • @blackjubilee

      Cali Camper Family Cheers, Jordan. It’s Ford UK itself that’s being vague - and the dealers know even less, as you say! Still, as you point out, none of this is surprising, things being as they are. Thanks again. I’ll leave you alone now. It must be bedtime in Italy 😉👍
