Joshua 1:5b-6 is a favorite scripture of mine and has a special place in my heart. My dad was shot and killed almost 18 years ago on April 10th. When I was leaving the trial walking to my car, I stood at a stop light waiting to cross the street, full of emotion. There was a man standing next to me. He looked at me and quoted this passage: "I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous." I broke down crying and told the man he had no idea what I'd just been through and he said he may not but that God does. El Roi- The God who sees- saw me that day and sent an angel to encourage me! ❤🙌🏽

My favorite Bible verse: “Be strong and courageous” (Josh 1:6)! What an encouragement, what an assurance, for those who have experienced a wilderness of grief, and for those who are perhaps struggling in their marriage or with trusting God for a hopeful future. “Be strong and very courageous” (Josh 1:7) because when we worship the Lord daily and “meditate on His word day and night” and obey it (Josh 1:8), He will grant us success. He will heal our grief, repair the relationship, and give us hope for the future because “the Lord is with you wherever you go” (Josh 1:9).

I noticed how the Israelites were told to stay their distance from the Arc of the Covenant as it went ahead of them. Then, as they crossed the Jordan, the Arc stayed right there in the middle where the Israelites would pass by. It stayed there until all the people had crossed, and then it was behind everyone. Such a literal picture of how God goes before, beside us, and behind us 🩷

I love this whole beginning of Joshua. I love how it is repeated 3x in Joshua 1:6-9 to be strong and courageous. God does not stutter but He knows that we can have a hard time believing so He repeats for emphasis and reassurance. Obedience is not always the easiest, but when God goes before us, we can rest in strength and courage that He is going before us and making a way. These 4 chapters show me how God is the way maker. I love the story of Rahab and her reward for just fearing the Lord...she is honored to be a mother in the lineage of Jesus! Then, the crossing of the Jordan. Love this story. The Lord goes before the Israelites and God performs the same miracle as He did at the Red Sea. Most of these Israelites had not been alive or old enough to remember witnessing this and just like our God, He does it again! He parts the waters but this time He commands them to build a memorial to remember what He has done. It's so easy for us to dwell in what God hasn't done rather than what He has done so we need to keep records! Write them down! Look at them, dwell on them. God is always making ways for us if we just take our eyes off the water and remember our stones. Love it!

    • @valogden37742
      @valogden37742 11 місяців тому

I lost my dad in 2019, my grandma in 2021, and most recently, and unexpectedly, my mama. It has been so hard. God loves His chosen people and guides them through the entry into the promised land. God displays His power and His work and the people display their faith in God and in His appointed leader for the nation, Joshua.
Moses has just died and now Joshua leads the people and their entry into the Promised Land is imminent. It is important to note that in Hebrew, Joshua's name is identical to Jesus - Jehoshua (one of the anglicized spellings), meaning "Jehovah is salvation". Of course, this is not random, but by God's design. Moses is a symbol of the law and this transition from Moses to Joshua immediately before they enter the land is significant. This is intended to show the inadequacy of the law to lead us to our Promised Land - our paradise, our salvation rest. Joshua and Jesus are both the only way, Joshua in the first and lesser physical instance, then Jesus in the second and greater spiritual instance. The meaning is plain - following the law faithfully cannot bring one to the promised rest, but only by following Jehoshua in faith can we achieve what God has ultimately promised.
God communicates to Joshua and encourages him. He wants Joshua to know that just as He was with Moses, He will be with Joshua. Joshua has but to be faithful in his obedience, courage, and strength and God will ensure their success. Joshua tells the people to prepare to cross the flooding Jordan river in three days. This is a significant event in the eyes of the people - will God work though Joshua as He did with Moses? Even though they may have privately thought this, publicly they pronounce their loyalty and obedience to Joshua and threaten death to anyone who isn't obedient.
Immediately Joshua secretly sends two spies to investigate the land ahead, especially Jericho. The last time spies were sent, it was a public event and it turned into a huge debacle before the people. This time was handled differently, with only two faithful spies sent in secret. The spies go to Jericho where they encounter a prostitute, Rahab, who helps them. She seems to be transformed by the encounter, changing from a sinful pagan to a faithful believer in God through God's work with the spies. Ultimately she is noted as marrying one of the Israelites and is an ancestor of Jesus. The story of Rahab and the spies is rich in symbolism. She is offered salvation from the coming destruction if she is faithful to God by helping the agents of God - the spies. Jericho is on high alert and they know they are in the path of the Israelites. It is likely that for the spies the only way in or out of the city in such a state of alert is through a relatively narrow window in the wall where Rahab lived. Entering normally through the city gate will surely result in the spies' capture and death. Rahab was accustomed to using this window both as a way of circumventing the security of the city by egress and a way of communicating to the outside world. Where previously this window was used for sinful purposes, now it is used for Godly purposes. A pact is made between the spies and Rahab that she and her family will be protected when the Israelites attack. The way of salvation for the people under this pact is indicated by the red rope hanging from the window. This is symbolic of the blood of Jesus which indicates the way of our salvation as Christians. The way to salvation here is narrow and only the chosen few will find it and use it. The way to death is wide and many will go that way. The spies will bring back a good report of what happened in Jericho. They will report of what they learned through Rahab when she told of how the people of the city have been affected by what they have seen God do previously. She was a testimony of God's good work in her and the people of the land.
Now God provides a powerful display of His power for Joshua's sake just as He did for Moses. The Jordan river is in the middle of its normal flood cycle in this time of year and is not reduced to a trickle in drought. It is overflowing its banks and is impassable by foot. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant are ahead of everyone else. They don't wait for the water to stop before they proceed. In faith, they walk right into the water and then the water upstream is stopped in a heap a considerably distance way. God then dries the riverbed and the those holding the ark remain in the riverbed while the people proceed on firm dry ground and not through deep mud. God has demonstrated for all the people that He will continue to act in great ways for Joshua and for them.
Joshua commemorates this event by commanding the gathering of stones for a memorial, undoubtedly large, from the middle of the now dry riverbed. A pile of stones is placed in the flooded part of the riverbed as a testimony to God's powerful work. This pile will only be visible when the river recedes during a period of drought. Another pile of stones will be established as a memorial where the people first camped in the Promised Land - at Gilgal.
God is loving and faithful to His people and sends powerful messages both to them and us so that we will know He will work for us and in us just as He did then when we have faith as the Israelites did.

My Godshot was that God's love is enduring. The Israelites have been disobedient, rebellious and downright difficult. But God still loves, provides for and protects them. He keeps His word. Therefore, I can count on Him to do the same for me, and I can do my best to keep His commandments, because He also provides the power to do so. What an amazing God He is!

I have come to realise that reading the Bible is not a season or a one time wonder it is a daily finidng God on every page and I am beginning to see why I struggled on so many levels to break with sin and to break with rekindling it because it requires "obedience and trust" "courage and strength" "keeping God near equips me to be obedient and fight off sin".

Every day, I ask Him to let me be a little closer to Him, and I believe that you are a big part of the answer to that prayer. Thank you so much.

It is so very encouraging to see so many reading through the Bible. As a teenager I was hit and miss on reading my Bible, I read many books from the Bible, primarily New testament and Psalms but when I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, at age 29, The Holy Spirit gave me a hunger for the word and I read through cover to cover. I've read cover to cover maybe 15 times over the years, rereading many of my favorite books multiple times. Then came the lean years, where I Lost my hunger, partly due to my own rebellion and circumstances. This year however, The Lord has drawn me back to his word, hallelujah! All my previous years of reading I never did it with commentary, this is my first time using an app, at 61 I have been a bit technologically challenged, lol, and I have thoroughly enjoyed having commentary from Tara Leigh.

I’ve reached the book of Joshua in TBR and my pastor just happens to start a new series on the book of Joshua the same week. How timely!
He shared these words that caused me to stop in my tracks. “we are not responsible for developing strategies to overcome obstacles. We are called to look for God’s activity and join in.”
For someone who’s a planner - this hit me. I thought about those Israelites, who were like many of us, thinking let’s have strategy to get us across, tie rope to hold on too, put together a bridge of sorts, something! But no, God said stand back so you all can SEE what I’m doing and just join in.
Thank you The Bible Recap. This is my first time reading through the Bible and I can’t get enough of His joy!

I am also new to the Bible Recap. I first heard of it from a couple of friends that posted on Facebook. I have always wanted to read the Bible but, although I did start, I wasn’t really “involved.” Once I started with the Bible Recap, I find myself anxious to do the daily readings, watch your videos and listen to your show. It is so much easier, and enjoyable, and you do such a wonderful job explaining it all. From a fellow North Texan, thank you for all you do!

In Joshua 1, Joshua assumes his role as leader of Israel now that Moses has died. I love that the Lord encouraged Joshua. He promises to never leave or forsake him (verse 5) and 3 times God tells him to be strong and courageous ( verses 6, 7, and 9). The tribes of Gad, Reuben, and the half tribe of Manasseh are reminded of the vow that they made. These tribes have received their inheritance land beyond the Jordan River. They agreed to have all men of age arm for battle to help their brethren secure their land on the other side of the river. How encouraging it was that these men keep their vow, but they also tell Joshua once more to be strong and courageous (verses 18).
In chapter 2, Joshua sends 2 spies into Jericho to spy out the land. Those spies encounter a woman named Rahab, who was a prostitute. She hides them in her home and tells them that the people in Jericho are terrified. Their hearts have melted because they have heard about all of the things that the Lord has done. Rahab and the 2 spies make an agreement with one another. She helped them by hiding them and not turning them over to the king of Jericho. In exchange, the men agree that when Israel comes to take the land, Rahab and her family's lives will be spared. She must have all of her family members in the house and put a scarlet cord on her window. Having that symbol on the outside of her home will spare her and her family's lives. This reminds me of the Passover. Both the Passover and Rahab leaving the scarlet cord on her window are foreshadowing God's ultimate plan of redemption for humanity, His Son Jesus Christ! What an amazing God! He made a way for all people to come to Him!
In Chapter 3, Israel crosses over the Jordan River. The priests go in first, holding the ark of the covenant, and by God's amazing power, the waters part so that everyone can cross over on dry land. God displays once that He controls everything, including nature and the elements. God is so powerful. In Chapter 4, all the people have crossed the Jordan River. God commands that a man from each tribe gets a stone from the river before it is closed up. They are to place them where they are lodging for the night. This serves as a memorial to Israel of what God did for them, and they are to tell their children about this. It serves us well today to keep a remembrance of all that the Lord has brought us through. I certainly can look back at my life and see how God has provided for me, cared for me, and protected me when I was acting like a fool. Thank God for His faithfulness!
Once again, TLC provides an awesome recap of today's reading. I never thought about the similarities between Rahab lying to the king of Jericho with Shiphrah and Puah lying to Pharaoh back in Exodus. In both cases, the women were blessed because they had their faith and trust in the One True God.
