The pitcher, not in the act of fielding a batted ball nor in possession of the ball, hindering the advance of the runner is a valid obstruction call. In pro rules there is no guarantee of a base award unless the obstructed runner is actively being played on (tag attempts, essentially) so he would only get first if the umpire both calls obstruction and believes the runner would have been safe without the obstruction.
To prevent spiking and collisions at first base, a flat extension of the base into foul territory should be added. The batter should be required to run to it if there will be an attempt to get him out.
