  • In today's video, I'm comparing STRAIGHT and PLUS sizes from maurices! As a midsize / plus size, size 14 / size 16 person, sometimes I feel like I can fit into both the largest straight size and the smallest plus size - which got me wondering...what's difference between the two? So I picked out a few different items from maurices in both the straight AND plus size versions, and compared and contrasted them for you! Let me know your thoughts - could you see a difference? Which fit did you like better? Hope you enjoy xoxoxo

As a former LOFT employee (Maurices used to also be owned by parent company Ascena) here’s a little insight which I believe also applies to Maurices:
1 - the standard sizing is modeled from a size 8 model and scaled up or down for sizes 00-16, however for the plus line, these are modeled from a size 18 model and sized up or down from size 14-26. They include extra darting etc to flatter additional curves us mid/plus size gals have. It’s also why as a size 14 like me, the straight size might be too tight, but the plus is too large. It’s all because they’re crafted totally differently.
2 - the plus sizes are considered a separate clothing line, so I believe that’s why you might see differences in price and also sizing (lettered vs. numeric).
Also, please try LOFT! Most weekends they have awesome sales to make it more affordable :) sadly they scrapped PLUS in stores as it didn’t perform well 😩 but it’s available online

I, too, work within the brands mentioned above and can say factories charge higher for the bigger sizes. We absorb the cost but I imagine other companies may just charge higher retails for combined straight and plus. Some things to keep in mind is extra yardage required to make and that fabric only comes in a certain width, so there may be extra cutting and assembly required, which could account for higher garment cost. I’m not saying it’s right, but that is probably why Maurices is charging two different prices, because they are paying their vendors two different prices. Also, small quantities of buys get up-charges and unfortunately plus lines are usually small buys.

The reason plus sized clothes typically cost more because they don’t produce as many of them, therefore it costs them more to produce. Companies usually get a discount for manufacturing them in bulk. Also, some plus sized clothing are made in completely different factories with different machines and the hassle of it or the price of manufacturing there is why the purchase price is higher

The reason that there is an odd overlap in sizing between straight sizes and plus sizes is because straight size clothing is patterned from a sample size (usually a size 8) and adjusted up or down for the rest of the sizes. Plus size clothes are also patterned from a sample size (usually a size 18 or 20) and adjusted up and down from there, but the sample is based on a plus sized body. There is a big difference between a straight size brand just making their clothes in bigger sizes and actually designing for a plus sized body. Our bodies don't gain weight evenly. Because you are in between (I am as well), it can be confusing trying to figure out if you should go for a plus or straight size, but I'm just happy to have the option. I have found that plus sizes typically have more room in the hips, bust and arms (which makes sense). So, if these are areas where you typically need more room, go with plus if you have the option. I find it best to compare the size charts and see how they overlap.

    • @hissing3904
      @hissing3904 3 роки тому +10

@@Kiwibird220 the standardization of pricing means the price of material (and other extra costs) is distributed across sizes. So smaller sizes pay more than their item cost, and bigger pay less. With plus size being a separate line, there's two different averages: one for straight sizes and a different for plus sizes, the later higher, of course. So it's not really people paying extra for plus size, it's people paying the actual price of plus size

I think the other reason you get so many requests for reviews of Maurice’s is that it exists in a lot of Midwest towns where the only other clothing options are at Walmart 🤷🏻‍♀️ This has been the case in most small Iowa towns I’ve lived in. I was actually a little sad that so many of these pieces were disappointing because access to cute, well-made clothing is definitely limited in towns like mine. And with a body like mine, ordering online can be such a disaster. As much as I wish I could order two of everything to get the right fit, that doesn’t work for my budget. Love your videos and you so much- just hope this gives a little more insight on why people request this specific store! 💛

It usually cost more in the plus sizes because they produce less, it’s a different pattern from the “straight” sized ones, and obviously it’s more material. So in reality it makes sense why they would charge more.. because it cost more to make. They are just trying to make the same revenue either way. I don’t think they are trying to “target” anyone with upping the price a few dollars. I pay more for petite clothes in some places, so it’s the same principle. Different pattern, less made= more expensive to produce.

The W indicates that it is cut wider in the hips and sometimes smaller in the waist as well. For those with a curvier shape.
Also, even though a xl/xxl in straight sizes can be the same size as a 0x/1x in plus. ..the pattern is different. The smallest through the largest size in standard sizing will be built off of the same pattern. Just cut smaller or larger. The plus size will (or should) have a completely different pattern to fit a plus size person. Which is the reason the arms were longer in your xl than in your 0x. The arms should increase in length from the 0x to the 1x to the 3x and so on.

As a Chemical Engineer and textile fanatic, I can say this about the higher prices on plus sizes
    1. Plus size clothing are made to acommodate more “curves” so they have more darts, which means higher production costs
    2. Plus sizes need more fabric, so more material=higher cost
    3. Plus sizes manufactures charge more, so it reflects on the final price, plus regular sizes can be manufactured at asia, which is cheaper, but there too fes plus size manufactures there, so company search out united states manufacturers, adding up to the final price.

As a Maurices expert (shopping there for twenty years), the waist goes in more on the 0x/1x vs XL and XXL. The 0x/1x has a little more fabric in the hips and waist. The XL/XXL tend to be a good inch or two longer. I'm a 16W and tend to wear a XL or XXL in their tops and 16W long in their pants. I need that extra length in the shirts being 5'10! Maurices have long served rural girls like me before we had the internet. (I'm 35.) I'd love to have you actually talk to a true plus size gal on your channel. 'cause girl you're straight sized, not plus sized. You had the body I had when I was like 25. Love the channel!
P.S. I just tried on ten pairs of jeggings in 16W when they had their $19 jeggings sale earlier this week. I cannot even get a 16 up over my hips. This proves that there is a HUGE difference between straight size and plus size!

Here we go. Another person telling us mid size girls what size we are. "You're too small to be plus size, blah blah blah..." She literally tried on a pair of 14W jeans, and they fit. So guess what, that's plus sized! She doesn't need a "true plus size" girl on her channel. It's hard enough to find sizes that work as a woman, but us mid size girls have an even harder time because we have to figure out additionally which size spectrum we fit in too. Which is why she made this video. Im sure you meant it as a compliment as your comment seems nice, but its ever so frustrating to be mid size and not quite be accepted by either standard size women or plus size women as part of their sizing group.

Thank you for doing this video Carrie. I've been a big fan of Maurices for many years now and shop there frequently. I've dabbled a little in the plus size, mostly to get things slightly oversized, but it's been a lot of hit or misses. Watching you try things on and show the difference between the two worlds was validating that sizing is always a crap shoot, even if the company offers a good range. The one thing I've noticed most in plus sizes here is that they are cut for more of an hourglass figure, so curvy. As someone who is 5' 1" and busty but small on the bottom, it's hard to wear plus size things because I can't fill out the pants. It's a weird world out there in fashion. Keep on keeping on girl! Old Maurices employee here! 0 converts to an XL it’s the same size. A 1 converts to a XXL. They tend to change the cut slightly, they are currently trying to get the plus and regular section to similar prices, that’s why the prices are weird at like 39.50 or whatever. I agree plus sizes shouldn’t be priced more. But you look super cute I own the First jeans you’re wearing and they fight me large too!

OMG that Express sweater is the Cutest on you!
I really enjoy these comparisons videos. I don’t know why, but I do! Maybe it’s the breakdown of being being like, hey, this costs more and there’s nothing more to it, wtf!?!?! Or maybe it’s the crazy world of women’s clothes where sizes are made up and body weight doesn’t matter (bad whose line joke😆), but I get a lot out of it, even though we happen to wear completely different size. 🤷‍♀️
Thanks for being awesome and continuing to show women of all ages that every size is beautiful and numbers have little meaning in size, and No value on beauty. 💜

absolutely love this video idea and really enjoyed watching! maybe if you choose to do it again you could hold the items up together (like hold the skirts by both waistbands eg.) so we can see how big the difference between the two actually is! :)

  • @xxxNamiCxxx

I like that you did this because it is interesting how straight and plus sizes can differ. I remembered buying a few flannels from Hot Topic once and I planned to get each of them in the same sizes which was xxl (as I like having a lot of room in my arms ), but they didn’t have the size available for one of the flannels in standard sizes yet it was available in plus, and I got the closes size I believe was similar which was 2x and can I just say, I was able to notice the difference in the feel of the flannels and even how the standard and plus size fits on me even though when looking at them from an outside perspective, they all looked like they were the same sizes. And unfortunately, we often have to pay more for plus size even if there isn’t much of a difference sometimes.

So my mom used to own a small clothing store and MSRP for plus size clothing was always a little more than the straight sized version. My mom is plus sized and said "F that" and averaged the two MSRPs for the item and sold both the straight sized and plus sized versions for the same price.

I was super bored and super hungry and didn’t want to watch another Hallmark Christmas movie (which I love ) and didn’t want to venture out in the rain to go get something to eat, so I just decided to take a nap and I was literally dreaming of trying on clothes in a dressing room of a store. I was so happy in my dream to be shopping and trying things on but then so sad when I woke up to know that it was just a dream and I’m still hungry. Anywaysss I always enjoy your videos and just listening to you talk.

Maurices is literally my favorite store ever! Their sizing is definitely different. When I shop online I have to check the size chart because in tops I can wear anywhere from a M-0X. (For reference I wear a 40F bra 😳) pants are something else too, but I love them. Anything with a super stretch a large fits, anything else a 31 or a 14w fits like a glove! I've noticed their plus sizes are similar like xl to 0x, but it seems its cut slightly differently to give just a little more wiggle room. Luckily the store near me is allowing try ons in store, so it makes shopping easier!

Thank you for highlighting the price difference in plus. It's so frustrating and is one of the reasons I stopped shopping at maurices-- partly the price thing and partly the in-store selection (moot during covid). It just feels like they shove plus to a small corner in the back and expect us to thank them by paying more.
