Beans on Toast - The Unlikely Gymnast

I'm not sure about you, but one thing I really like doing is getting hammered and talking nonsense. I've been practising for years and in my time I've said some really stupid things.
This is a story about something stupid that I said, perhaps the stupidest thing I’ve ever said.
Another thing I have a tendency do when I'm drunk is talk at great lengths about things I know nothing about. Sometimes I even like to tell people how to do their jobs. This is all well and good unless, of course, you end up hanging out with three gymnasts.
I'd met the Walker sisters at a festival and we'd been drinking together for some time when they told me that all three sisters were gymnasts. In fact, after further investigation, I found out that both their parents were gymnasts and that two of the three sisters had kids who were all super talented and following in the Walker family footsteps. Incredible.
The conversation took a few drunken turns and somehow I was talking about my plan to move to Scarborough (where the sisters lived) and get a job at Scarborough Gymnastics Academy (where they worked) so that I could become part of the team. I had it all worked out; I was going to take the name ‘Mr Rolly-Polly’. They even promised me an office with my name on the door. It all sounded like good fun and a good laugh, and then I said it:
"I'm gonna make gymnastics sexy again"
What the fuck was I on about? Now I'm not saying I can't be sexy, but to think that a drunk, scruffy, 36-year-old fool, could bring anything sexy to the table when it comes to gymnastics (quite possibly the sexiest sport ever!) is ridiculous. Well, as I said, it was a stupid thing to say. Luckily, the Walker sisters didn't take offence - we carried on the conversation and the fun of the festival. The sisters even showed me some handstands before I bid them farewell.
Normally, I just wake up and forget about the stupid, drunken things I said the night before, but no such luck this time round as the sisters got back in touch. They came along to a show in Leeds and wanted to know how the move to Scarborough was coming along and then reminded me about my stupid comment.
I felt like a right proper idiot.
I wanted to apologise. I actually wanted to backtrack and in some way explain that I know I can't make gymnastics sexy. I wanted to explain that gymnastics is, in fact, already very sexy. So, I did the only thing I know how to do in situations like this and I wrote them a song. ‘The Unlikely Gymnast’.
Since that day, and that stupid comment, I've become good friends with the Walkers. After playing them the song, they let me visit them in Scarborough for the day to film the video. Mum and Dad Walker were busy on filming day, but all three sisters and all the kids feature in the video alongside the students of Scarborough Gymnastics Academy. It was a brilliant day with some wonderful people, and they taught me some gymnastics. Big thanks to all involved, especially Damien Quinton who's heading for big things.
If there's a moral to this story, it's that it's sometimes worth saying stupid things. Who knows where you'll end up?
