OSINT At Home #10- How to map anything with freely available location data
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- This tutorial is part 10 of the OSINT At Home series. It covers how to make custom maps with publicly available data on anything. For example, you can create a map like this one I have created on public water fountains and public toilets in London, which I use to plan my runs: maphub.net/ben...
I have also included a few examples in the video, such as mapping CCTV cameras in Munich, or gas well sites in Australia. Please do look around the wiki that I have linked to, as there are lots of opportunities to collect and map data based on what you are investigating, researching, or interested in.
The tutorial specifically covers the use of Overpass Turbo, which allows you to query the Open Street Map (OSM) database and export those points as a KML, GPX, GeoJSON or other file types so that you can load it into Google Earth or any other map platform you use. I have also covered some frequently asked questions in this tutorial, such as how to put a kml or kmz file in Google Earth, which is as simple as a ‘drag and drop’, and I have also covered how you can upload these datasets into a free to use platform called MapHub, where you can create public or team maps for your hobbies, research or projects.
It should be noted that all data, from any source, should be verified before being relied upon. For example, I checked the locations of CCTV cameras or water drinking points by viewing them through Google Street view. However, there may be some limitations to it as some of those amenities might be closed or removed - so always good to check your data.
The OSINT At Home series is useful for those looking to find digital breadcrumbs and pick up some methods of open source intelligence (OSINT), digital investigations and good old plain research. No matter who you are, or where you are in the world, you can follow these tutorials from home with publicly available information to answer questions such as who, what, where and when.

Hi Benjamin, for years I have created security-related maps for our high-crime community in rural South Africa. I stumbled across your channel, and it was a real eye-opener. The resources you share will make my work so much easier and so much better. A big, BIG thank you!
You are very welcome
id love to see information about your community. maybe you could do videos on your communities security? maybe not because it would show your hand.
Awesome
Hi I'm from South Africa too and I'm in Tech, how far are you with your project
Ben I just found you, looks like I am gonna be a regular.
Welcome aboard 🙏
Amazing tutorial, Ben!!! Thanks for putting it together.
Thanks Doowan - really appreciate it 🙏
Really amazing stuff. Had no idea about these tools. The potential to export the GeoJSON files and then create a custom map in After Effecs using Geolayers is very exciting.
Glad it helps!!
Another important thing: OSM is a volunteer-made map, so places where people spend less free time on the Western internet, will get mapped less (eg. China, Africa). You should also consider volunteering edits or donating.
"You can see how this can be useful maybe if you're looking for CCTVs, ATMs, power lines..." Bro are you planning something???
What I'm seeing becoming increasingly common is geolocation over time. Would you consider this as a topic? It would take this geolocation mapping to the next level.
Welcome back and TYSM!! Requesting a GEPHI tutorial
It’s scheduled to do! But thank you 🙏
Hmmmmm....you have piqued my interest.....Think I am going to have a rummage around your channel for a while....shake the tree so to speak and see what drops out......🤔🤔
Thanks Ben - that's very interesting. Regarding the Open Street Map wiki, is it not the case that the data is very hit and miss? I tried a test for CCTV, and then for manmade surveillance in London, and there were far fewer cameras than I would have thought (and none around Liverpool Street train station, which is obviously wrong). Is this just down to definitions of what cameras are in the public domain (rather than govt), or is there another category for this entirely? Really enhjoying your series though and have recommended it to a few people. Cheers
It's all contributor generated, and I don't think most people add CCTV cameras to the map. I personally don't bother with adding them. I mostly focus on pedestrian infrastructure, drinking fountains and toilets.
Perhaps the most important difference between osm and google is the license and the possibilities of use, since osm is actually free for any use, including commercial, while google you can only look at it and you cannot even collect the information.
Hey man, I am a fresher with basic cybersecurity knowledge and i want to build a career in OSINT could you recommend where i should start from??
Same question
Find something you are passionate about, that gives you a sense of curiosity or feeling of doing good and piece together the dots online.
There are so many potential points of research online. It could be mapping coral destruction, finding stolen dogs sold on websites, verification of community/local news claims, geolocating old world war photos, or reading the headlines and looking a little deeper at what the internet says to find trends and patterns.
@@Bendobrown thanks man
Start learning how to write correctly.
Hello. Could I integrate this with Thunkable some how through an API and also have the capability of adding my own custom pins all over a given map?
I'm not sure why this entered my feed but having watched it I'm glad it did. I will have to play with this stuff. Thank you.
Thank you for your work. I am often interest in how data like covid deaths or gun deaths break down by congresional district
Hey ben. nice work. Is it possible to take it more detailed? Like waterstations and public toilets that are maximum 1 km from each other?
Good video man...I want a video where I can to see car traffic live free. on satelite map......can You do that????
Dont forget many companies offer free drinking water (the often have a sign in the window or door)
Great overview Ben. Thanks for putting this together!

11:05 "I really like sharing data with others"
Google: "You don't say?"
I wonder why Google doesn't incorporate all this free data into Google Maps?
Google did better by making their interface open enough to add any specialty data you fancy. There is no way Google could incorporate the many thousands of free data sets available and keep the UI manageable. Better to allow customization.
Google does area querying. It only searches a small area to make queries more manageable and overall cheaper for them.
It's not the most informative but usually gets the job done for most people.
