    Hi, What is the maximum chainring size I can put? I'm planning to put 34T, but I'm wondering if it is going to touch the frame.. Thanks

    • @Dr.MountainND
      @Dr.MountainND  22 дні тому +1

      Oh, that might be too big...I cannot say for sure as I've kept the stock 30T.

    Have logged around 2,000 miles on my Fathom 2. I'm only now beginning to experience the chain ring derailment dilemma as you mentioned. Another thing to note too is that since the angle between the top gear and the chain ring itself so large, it causes additional wear on the chain itself, leading to premature "chain stretch".

      I'm so sorry, I'm not certain how to be accurate with the dimensions as the local bike shop ended up installing the new cranks...

    does the Giant Fathom fit 2.6" wide tires?
    also have you had any problems with the fork so far?

    • @Dr.MountainND
      @Dr.MountainND  Рік тому

      Hi, yes, it comes stock with 2.60 tires (mine is 27.5 inch). It may be able to fit slightly larger with some clearance at the frame and fork. And the fork has worked fine, just the dust cap broke!

    As with your experience, the chainring problem didn’t show up until after 9 months of riding for me. Good on Praxis for owning up to the issue. It wasn’t even on my radar to reach out to them, and it’s very difficult to find a replacement ring without swapping cranksets, since you need a SRAM direct mount ring that has a Shimano tooth profile…Wolftooth makes one but it’s like $80. I got a OneUp switch system that essentially converted the direct mount to a 104bcd…hindsight I probably should have just replaced the crankset with an SLX unit, but inventory was nonexistent at the time.

    • @Dr.MountainND
      @Dr.MountainND  Рік тому

      Yes, I was very pleased with Praxis for helping out. I also had the same inventory issues which I why I ended up with the RaceFace replacement cranks but it would have saved me a lot of money if I just called Praxis first! Good luck

    if the frame is Boost (148mm) wide in the rear axle you need to use a chainring with 3mm offset, if not boost (142mm) wide only, a chainring with 6mm offset is used...

  • @JosephDredd31
    @JosephDredd31 Рік тому +1

    I also reached out to Praxis and they sent me a 3mm offset chain ring ASAP. Funny how the bike shop had no clue what I was talking about when I asked about this issue. I only rode the bike 2 times after replacing the 3mm offset and since then I changed all the components to full XT. Even the wheel set. The XT wheels have a offset as well for the disk and rear cassette. Nice stuff.

    • @Dr.MountainND

      It should fit just fine but the best way is for you to test ride one if you can. I imagine the medium frame would fee quite cramped for you...

    I have the same bike. I'm going to call praxis and see what they will do. I have the problem as well. The 3mm offset makes a big difference i guess

    • @Dr.MountainND
      @Dr.MountainND  Рік тому

      I think it's an inherent problem with the 1x systems as the chain angle is so large now. But, for general fun mountain biking when you don't need the bigger rings for racing, the 1x set-ups are more convenient. 3mm hopefully is enough...I've know by next year!!

    • @Develoquent
      @Develoquent Рік тому +1

      @Dr. Richard Mountain ND praxis got my email and sent me a 30t 3mm offset chainring for free. That should do the trick. I Also got a chain guide as well

    the 2022 model has a 1x10 drivetrain, I wonder if that was used to change the chain ring issue?

    I have just bought this bike to my son and on his first ride in the neighborhood the chain fell two times. Today I will call the shop and hopefully they will be able to resolve this. Since I am in EU, idk if I can “contact Praxis” about this.. if I would have to return the bike bcs of this it would be such a pitty… he really likes it

    • @Dr.MountainND
      @Dr.MountainND  4 місяці тому

      If it is a used bike, it could be that the Praxis front chainring is worn. Also, check to see if the clutch on the rear derailleur is engaged - if it's off, this will cause the chain to fall off often as well.

    I Have a Giant Fathom of 2017 vintage - All the so-called experts and experienced riders praise and bitch about various bikes - The difference between a 1 and 2 model and different years etc. - Chaps it's the components that make the difference. My Fathom frame is no different from a fathom 2 to a fathom 1. - All manufacturers knock out bikes cheaper with cheaper components, wake up chaps! - I love the frame geometry etc - I upgraded to Shimano XT and a narrow wide tooth chain ring, never a chain drop! now I have an awesome bike! you get what you pay for!
