In this video, we have debated Radhika Desai of @InternationalManifesto there is a meaningful emergence of global convergence between the Global North and the Global South. We have discussed neoliberalism and the alternative path that China has traversed in these years. We discussed what socialism is and can be. Finally we discussed the implication of the recent election in India, with a sharp focus on neo-fascism in India.

Guys, we want to work full-time on this. If your wallet allows please drop us some support. We prefer the PayPal method since we don't lose half of the money, but you can also give us a super chat. If you are a large donor, we would obviously get in touch with you to give something back if we can. But if you can't no worries. Please like, share, and subscribe. That means a lot already
The difference, China based on the socialism attitude, Chinese characteristic key thing. Yes they are not allow the capital control government Western country words and capitalism is not fit China. The majority of people were left note protection. That’s why the India has a so slow development today is capitalism will not help the judge people.
Excellent discussion. Great having Dr. Desai on this essential topic.
The last G20 summit in India Indian Foreign Minister said and claimed India is the voice and leader of Global South countries.
Can anyone explain what have India the voice and leader of Global South countries have done for global south countries so far compared with China?
India has suppressed the economical growth of its landlocked neighbor like Nepal. They know if they ever gain economical independence, they will demand their lost lands and India can't say no at the international court.
Well they haven't lured them into debt traps.
Professor Radhika really knows her stuff. She’s amazing.
I dunno. She comes across as another unrealistic, unhinged socialist. 😮
Thank you for an outstanding, erudite discussion on these critical issues of our times.
A thorough analysis of the world. An excellent talk and discussion about US, China and India.
Excellent talk! Thank you from the US.
Great clarity! Will try to checkout 'Geopolitical Economy' by Radhika Desai.
Prof Desai is simply great.
Yes prof. Desai. The most important thing is a socialism that rejects imperialism. You must always remember that imperialism is not just a policy or a choice of capitalist states, but an inevitable and natural phase in the development of capitalism itself.
Absolute rubbish. Imperialism is inherently pre capitalist. When wealth was tangible. Capitalism fosters alliances with national socialists for access to labour surplus. Hence this bizarre Chinese factory statism as the manufacturer of choice for capitalists.
The left seems to attract dunces.
But capitalusm always used empires (Prof. Desa? Prof.

@@samaval9920 These people were and are wrong. Empires extend real assets, capitalism deals with intangible assets. Marxs analysis of capitalism is correct, his approach to revolution, wrong.
@@samaval9920 The left has largely become the national socialist handmaiden of capitalism. They are good at running factory states for American capitalists, are mostly fat cat middle class predators, are deeply embedded with a certain religious empire. Thats how useless they are. They need to get out of the way and let capitalism conscientise the working class.
@@demontrader1222a pile of wood is very much a tangible asset it can also be exchanged for someone to think of a number which is also capital exchange. without empire the codification of everything is impossible.
Excellent historical and economic analysis!
I always learn so much from Prof Desai. Thank you.
The host's take on the US economic power is kind of abstract. He basically looks at the numbers and infers the US is in a better position than some claim, i.e. it is not declining. However, professor Desai corrected him by analysing the matter dialectically. Im not sure though if he is convinced.
Hii joytish ,hope you r doing well
The GDP discussion was really interesting, and I think one thing to keep in mind is that a lot of GDP in the US is really captured productivity from other countries, so if multipolarity leads to an inability to capture that, due to the increased sovereignty of the global south, the GDP in the US would take a major hit in proportion to that. GDP in the US is a direct result of imperialism, and for instance it's the ability to overpay the US service sector and distribution workers while underpaying foreign manufacturers. That moves the value from be accounted for in, say, Bangladesh's GDP for their extraordinary textile production and instead accounted for in the US service sector of the brands that sell them, and that profit then moves through circuits of financial capital and supports the massive speculation we see there. That's why manufacturing is important, and primary, relative to other sectors. That's the vital insight of Marx, to not get lost in the circuits of capital that we don't see that the source of value in a capitalist economy is productive labor, and manufacturing is the most important sector of productive labor.
There is no perfect system for any country & systems will keep on changing.
There is hope for balance only when the leaders work for the people & for their country. China is a realistic example & we can learn a lot from their governance style.
its a war! too many are too comfortable and are happy for others to die for the little some believe they have.....it's a battle......
Very intelligent program lead by Professor Desai. I will be following her closely for.my own edification as she clearly holds and expert level understanding of Marxism, classical economics and historical materialism.
Fantastic interview!
We the people must choose to have affordable, good housing, food, education, life possibilities that support our ability to thrive. When we grasp that we actually have a choice over who "leads" us to these opportunities, we will be able to create societies that produce them. We the people can choose in many ways besides voting & elections. We can join together in many ways. The key is unity & willingness to share our efforts & gains.
the issues are greater than that.....capitalism has told an untrue story and based it's progress on an ossified structure, only existing by force of will and force of action. collective efforts are difficult to realise inside the constant make-believe.
I got a kick out to of hearing Ms. Desai say "mojo". 😊
The West is not declining, Western hegemony is declining because the Global South especially India, ASEAN, and China are growing economically at a faster pace.
Another very good discussion. A couple of comments: to the presenter, could you try not to speak over your guest. No matter how confident you think you are on some point. It's quite ugly when you do this and I'm for one not that interested in your point of view. I'm interested in hearing your guests' thoughts. My second comment is concerned with China. Look they're miles ahead of everyone now. I would say at least a decade or two ahead of most Western countries in many aspects. Just one statistic. There is an index called Nature index (I'm not a fan of these type of rankings but it's important because it's a Western capitalist ranking) for the most "productive" institutions in terms of high quality scientific publication output. Of the top twenty institutions, fifty percent are from China. The US are a distant second at 20 percent. Then comes Germany and England at ten percent each and then France and Japan at five percent each. Research, drives innovation. Without it capitalism isn't able to grow. Forty years ago, China was no where to be seen. It was considered a backward country in terms of science from the point of view of the West. You should let this single statistic sink in. If you've ever been to China recently you see this tremendous transformation both economically, and in fact I have to say, culturally. There is a lot the West can learn from the Chinese I think.
If you listen carefully to what we have been saying, you would realize that the debate is not about the convergence between China and the West. That has been the most uncontested fact, and the most spectacular in recent human history. The key point is- China is an outlier as far as the Global South is concerned. A lot of people in the West, specially those who do not follow Global South closely makes the mistake of seeing China's narrowing of gap as Global South's narrowing of gap. That's a fatal mistake. From time to time, a handful of countries from the "East" rise from backward economic level, narrow the gap, and then fold up somewhere close to the West, or a somewhat lower. The problem is that specific country- whether it was Japan or NIC economies, or China now- then diverge away from the rest of the Global South. And what we then have is a new situation where the West and that new country represent one block economically (not necessarily politically), while the rest of the Global South keeps lingering. It is most atrocious and ignorant today to think of Global Convergence when 100s of countries literally are at the brink of sovereign debt crises. That is the main point, not the rise of China. Even the most ignorant person today doesn't doubt China's rise. We can debate about sectors, but that is irrelevant to the larger discussion.
@@IndiaGlobalLeft I just made a comment about China. I'm sorry if I pressed an unintended button somewhere.
Haha, not at all. We replied because it is not about us (as in the host or the other team members of the show). Apart from the fact that unlike you, we are definitely interested in you (just being sarcastic), the main point is that rise of China has coincided with continued immiseration of hundreds of countries under the global economic system. If we are to understand global capitalism in its true sense, or at least be committed to struggles of the most impoverished people on earth, we will have to sometimes see beyond the debate about China vs the West.
For some hosts it is better to do that.
@@AntonStampfl Endorsed! In addition I follow this channel and I've never seen a male guest harassed in this way. Pack it in
What a wonderful woman.....and a veritable fountain of knowledge .....her grasp of not just economics but also of world affairs/Geopolitics is amazing....viva la Dr. Radhika Desai. ...I'm in love !... lol!
15:00 general decline in manufacturing, and greater preponderance of finance capital?
Among the best economists in the world are Dr. Radhika Desai , Dr. Michael Hudson, Dr. Wolff 👏

Fantastic ! So informational . Thank you.
Watching
Great stuff! Thank you!!
Very interesting conversation. Thank you.
Thank goodness
Dr. Desai is brilliant and patient.
❤❤❤❤❤
US economy today is growing because they print over couple of trillions per year. So its not growing but adding printed money in the economy
This is really an enlightening conversation that helps an ordinary person like me to have a comprehensive view of what is happening in the real world!

Fantastic conversation! Really enjoyed it. Thank for you openness and willingness to engage in discussions so that we all become a little wiser.
Again, the interviewer NEEDS to stop interrupting and learn the entire system proposed.. you are too loud!
Yes, I found him slightly infuriating; the professor was trying to explain to him GDP - and she did it very eloquently .

In context of 'market valuation' wrt manufacturing, finance capital, both, only, etc etc
Point of disagreement: "Under Capitalism, as it exists ... If u have big financial assets ... U don't need to own a factory"
- vs: 51:15 Contradiction in relationship of financial asset owner and material capital(?) in the political economy (?)
* State must discipline capital.
Academics should be in charge of running nations ...they really are superior beings and we must follow them because they use smart words like foisted. I feel better about myself coz i watched this and my parents have degrees and i think know whats better for poor people. hooray!
Inertia vs. Dynamism

The host is too argumentative....why invite a guest when you keep arguing with her to show that the host is better? The host just needs to have great questions and allow the guest to explain and expand.
after all these programmes he still thinks positive intent only with capital.....boxed thinking.....after all the people he spoken with hes still in a box! 😂
There is a book entitled The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen.
@@theinfralink6598 They're both Indian, numbskull.
He's trying to get her to explain why she thinks he's wrong. If others hold his views, this is a way for her to be able to directly challenge them. This isn't a soapbox, it's a conversation. Don't be such a bootlicker.
@@fun_ghoul if you are correct, than it should be poised as an intelligent question. Further why raise his voice against your guest?
He is a host, and that is not the correct way to put forward an aggressive question.
Why have a guest, he should just have his own show than he can speak all he want.
I guess he is your friend and you are the bootlicker.
Left is loosing, not west.

¡Muy buen debate!
Pero super cargado de conceptos de la economía geopolítica, las pláticas (lectures) de la profesora Desai requieren de que uno se ponga a estudiar para comprenderlas mejor, uff…
How is the Chinese bureaucrat governed differently from the Indian? Is the bane of India's bureaucratic culture - IAS, it's final nail in the coffin?
India’s problem is that they still suffer from British colonial rule through the civil servant class that took over when the British left. India can never follow China’s lead as no Indian political party following Socialism or ‘heaven forbid’ communism, for the people, will never win.
The topic -- Its a very complicated issue.
Many factors are associated with it. Some of them has been mentioned.
But the top matter is the center point of the discussion -- West is losing its stand in the world.
In one way - the way of rule of nature - it can happen.
The other way - East and West - The question of leadership of world - East doesn't like or approve any ruling over them as guardian.
So the challenge comes !
East is gradually taking its due roll in governing the world.
Hahaha this was fun
For left brains Modi era is not liked eventhough left is not left in India.
Dan juga belum bisa alat2 teknologi seperti roket dan semikonduktor dan juga yang dan lain-lain nya
33:00 neoliberalism, wut is it?
- Monopoly Capitalism artificially sustained by 'free market' paradigm?
Interviewer needs to listen more
One definition of socialism is workers taking control the means of production in large established corporations. Worker co-ops essentially.
But that worker owned and run company will still act like any capitalist company in the markets. And, if that company takes off big time, the workers owning the company will all become rich. And the company will be a big player politically because of its monetary power.
Where do you go at that point?
Another defintion of socialism is to replace markets with economic planning.
We've had a number of examples of those in history and they all were a disaster.
Personally, I think we can live with capitalism, but it must be a heavily regulated capitalism to address all of capitalism's inherent flaws and this can only be done in conjunction with a political system that is run by the power of the people not by the power of the rich. Good luck with that, unfortunately.
_"Where do you go at that point?"_
Imperialism. Ask Mondragon. They now have goods made in Vietnam, where the workers are not members of the co-operative.
Whats goes up must come down. It is a fact of life.
I wish yoy had spoken more about farmers and agriculture. 70% of India is either agrarian or gets its livelihood from agriculture. So, how can you discuss India without them?
Your good ha 😊
Mana mungkin bisa jadi india negara maju seperti china prodoksi india tidak ada produksi yang bisa menarik bagi negara lain
Superb!!!!
It really is superb, but a bit sublime. The questions are so naive and the answers so comprehensive.. marvelous.
Michael Hudson sees beauty in economics, I wish i do, but I don't like it for some reason maybe because its human. I see beauty in math, but its hard, I caught a glimpse of it : (
Prof Desai seems to be illinformed on India's economic growth rated in last 10 yoe. Does she even read any economic news?

India can't feed its people. And the rising population which is young will add more to the pool.
Indian government must stop encouraging the mass migration of Indians from Bihar, UP, Madras, South India and so on in to Nepal. Bihari Indians are not native to Nepal as falsely believed by many Indians and as promoted by the Indian government. Only indigenous "Tharu" are natives in Terai just like the aborigines of Australia with their own distinct ways and culture. The citizenships act is still a debate for Nepalese folks as it was done against their will.
