Hi Ricky! Good question. I’ve tried making them from coffee cans before. I’ve also tried having small classes of beginners make them from coffee cans. Unfortunately, the steel on a coffee can is SO thin that it makes it more difficult to shape the notes and contour the steel. I think the easiest steel to start with would be about 0.9mm thick. Perhaps you could find this on a 5 gallon bucket somewhere. Yes, I’ve made simple drums from coffee cans and 5 gallon buckets, but the results are always less than perfect and to some degree, getting them into tune can take more time and with more frustration.
I imagine tuning the drum is the hardest part and it takes a lot of practice to be able to hear the harmonics and know how to adjust it to make it sound nicer
This video is not a very good first step. Although the info is still useful. The title says "How to make your own steel drum", but the video really only shows how to tune a steel drum.... once you figure out how to make it.
Yeah good one dave, just got a chrome shop sitting around the corner, plus finished a degree in tonation, sound engineering and metal works. Yeah I´m just as unique as you are bro, don´t we feel sorry for all the majority of suckers out there who don´t know what the hell your talking about. ahhaaha
@PANVALBOY You say "not being racist" but your words are indeed racist. Instead of talking about "fly by night prates" etc, you should be talking about how lazy and backward Trinis are relative to developing what we invented. In any event, stop being so insular and recognize that we live on the planet earth and we should be proud that apart from inventing the steelpan, the rest of the world has acknowledged its value and improving on it.
Man this to me seems like it would be the hardest instrument on earth to tune or atleast correctly! Absolutely amazing!
this should be a required class for all music students
my favorite activity when the neighbors are trying to sleep
It seems like the pounding and adjusting can affect the adjacent notes and create a chain reaction, it looks very hard, good job!
Great sound effects
🤣 Thank you!
Can u make a video on how we can make a still drum out of a small coffee can?
