It is quite unusual for pirates to broadcast AM
Meh, not *that* unusual.
The Russian two-way voice comms in the “100 meter band” (2-4 MHz, roughly, with most activity in the 2800 - 3300 kHz ballpark right at the 3 MHz threshold between MF and HF) use AM.
As far as shortwave pirates go, yep, plenty of them use SSB (see: Amphetamine Radio, Wolverine Radio, Radio Free Whatever, and many, many more) but just as many use AM - including some examples who broadcast in AM *stereo* (the classic example being the pirate who calls himself XFM). Lots of other examples though.
i playd this my laptop started hugging me
AM is better than USB. USB sounds like cheap toy whike AM provide better overall sound quality, especially bass. But it has far worse coverage, 50% of energy is used for carriers and 50% of remaining for each side band.
Thanks, I actually debated how to show this and ended up using SAM 10kHz, however my TX and RX are flat from DC to 20 kHz so on SSB modes, running say 8 kHz you can not beat the audio production.
Wait, it’s *not* the rock version?
So far, only the military uses the Rock version!
