DIY Rocket Stove. Make a Powerful and Efficient Wood Burning Camp Stove from Recycled Beer Cans.

- In this video I am back in the shed making the third and final stove in this mini series on DIY wood burning camp stoves.
This episode shows the building of a powerful twin walled rocket stove. Using recycled materials, I build the inner chamber, feed port and chimney, then insert it into the outer section, packing the void with fireproof vermiculite.
On testing, the stove out-performs all the other stoves I have built - it produces a hot, powerful fire thanks to the chimney effect built in to the design and uses very little fuel to boil water and cook. You can adjust the burn by rotating the stove so that the feed port faces the wind for higher temperature, or point it away from the wind for less power. Although bulkier than the other two stoves in the series, it is still lightweight and highly portable.
I am absolutely thrilled with this stove - it will certainly get plenty of use, and all made from items that would otherwise get thrown away - a winner in my book!
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Simon suffering for his art again, poor lad having to drink all that beer just to entertain us 🤣
Nah he’s been hanging onto the Sapporo cans since he saw New Order play Pennies back in the day… 🤣
I have a stove in the making that doubles up as a charcoal kiln. It could also be used as a foundry by firing it with the charcoal it produces.
If he's after drinking support give me a shout 🍻
A huge amount of beer research went into this project. I can appreciate that devotion!!
What a bloke in the woods! Adding a touch of class and skill once again to the outdoor UA-cam community. Will never tire of your videos. 👌
Thank you Jake!
Being from the USA, I am impressed with the quality of the bacon. I hardly ever see bacon so lean being offered up at the butchers counter or grocery stores. Not to take any thunder away from your stove project ;)
Excellent stuff, lovely stove, and always great to see a cameo from the beautiful Maggie.
One of the best rocket stove builds I have seen yet.
Bloody Brilliant Idea - I never thought of using a mini keg as the body. Now I MUST drink that beer LOL.
So nice to see Maggie again, even if was so brief...
Thanks for the great stovebuild! It look marwellous! 😁👍
Great to see a guest appearance by Maggie “the wonder dog”. 😄👍
Been waiting ages for somebody on the t’internet to generate a simple to follow conversion of mini beer keg into a rocket stove and you have delivered it superbly! Thank you Simon 🙏
Just got to find the time to turn my empty mini keg into an excellent rocket stove!
That was brilliant, I’m going to name you Simon the man that can do anything.👍
That's my favourite one yet. Now I have an excuse to buy an Adnams mini-keg. What a martyr I am. Loved the vid.
Great job there! And so pleased to see Maggie making a star appearance 🥰
Nice video it’s always nice to cook a meal without having to pay for gas and cleaning the garden at the same time
Enjoyed the video . Looks Stable and seems to work very well . I like the fact that it’s a realistic build with simple tools and not a fancy stove built with and in a £ 25000 workshop . 👍
We "can" see the old chippy skills at work
again Simon (one former chippy to another) works a treat too, and a good draft on the tube looks like creating a good amount of heat very inovative..👍
Party 7 cans take me back. Me and our kid hard at it. So sick the day after. Double Diamond and Skol. Next level home stoves, great work Simon. It's Maggs, we miss Maggs bless her.
Putting the vermiculite in the cavity makes this a better more stable proposition than a slender version which has a lot of heat loss. Nifty
That’s a great weekend project....Saturday drink the keg contents then Sunday construct the stove. Nice one ! Cheers .
I would consider puting a horizontal divider in bottom feed tube. Sticks on top, air on bottom
Very clever. Impressed . Glad to see Mags on guard😃
Thank you Simon. We enjoy watching your videos and it was nice to see Maggie.
This is definitely my favorite one you've made too, Simon. Cheers!
So Nice to See You and Maggie Sharing another Wonderful Video for us! Thank You for showing us how to recycle something into something Useful
Well, if that's not a decent excuse to go out and buy more beer, I don 't know what is! Brilliant job Simon, well made and works a treat. Passed the bacon test with flying colors...
I like the way the can keeps the branding (I guess due to the Vermiculite) rather look all grundy after the first use.. Great Vid..
Another brilliant homemade stove and great to see Maggie join you at the end for the bacon test too! 👏😊
That is absolute genius! Fair play to you Simon
Simple, bit of engineering, but works a treat! I will give this one a try!
Great that Simon vermiculite works great too 👍👍
Great vid, smart engineering, great re-use of scrap. Lovely to see a bit of Maggie too. Thanks as always.
Great stove Simon!
The good thing about building a stove out of a pony keg and beer cans is some one has to enjoy that beer first..
At Christmas they sell an ale in a 5L can much like that. I saved some up over the last couple of years thinking about something like this. Love it!
Great project. If I had a drink that keg and three cans of beer before I built it I couldn’t even find my tool shop lol. All joking aside, another great job I love rocket stove they work very well.
Cracking job Simon. I think it got the seal of approval from Maggie as well ;-)
Simply brilliant. Now know what we can do with all the empty mini casks at the brewery 🍺
Really enjoyed that one Simon. I’m rushing out today for a keg of pale ale and 3 cans of Sapporo! Once sober, I’ll be giving it a go! Thanks for sharing mate 👍
I've had a go at making them as a school project but this far better than my efforts, great video
Great handiwork on the rocket stove 👍 makes me want to drink beer and cook !!
Simon, would you be able to make a list of the size of the holes and maybe a drawing showing measurements for the pot holder? I’m sure we’d all greatly appreciate it!
My favorite by far as well. Hi Maggie, good to see you enjoying some bacon.
Just brilliant, plus you get to drink the beer.
Camp stove extravaganza part 3! :D
SIMON, another GREAT video!!! Nice to see MAGGIE again too...
Well, glad it didn't go down the drain. Your a trooper for drinking all that 😄. Top job mate on the rocket stove. I'm sure it will stand the test of time mate. Thanks pal 👍
Love it ! Makes me want to make one out of my empty broadside keg 👍👍👍
I’m impressed if you knew me you’d know how good this is top draw nice one Simon
Nice rocket stove build. It cooked that bacon nicely. 👍
Nice KEGGER! Those Sapporo cans are the best DIY.
Run a spiral of copper pipping around the void and hey presto - warm water while camping!
It's good to see Maggie.
Nice build, and good to see Maggie ! Consider adding a grate/woodrest in the bottom tube. Lets the air feed under the fire. The fire sets on top of the grate. You should get a cleaner burning and hotter flame. Thanks for the vid. P.s, Thats one serious can of beer !
Absolutely cracking little stove. Looks a treat too, hat off to you Simon you never fail to please lol.
The hat NEVER come off.
And of course, the best part of this stove is doing all the "research" beforehand ("research" = emptying the original contents of the keg/cans 😉) Just be sure to wait a day or so before operating any power tools. Well done Simon. Really solid construction. The addition of the vermiculite is great idea as well, both from an efficiency and structural point of view. Thanks Simon. All the best from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦
I heard that ash works good too!
Hello. My name is Simon, and I'm a stove-a-holic. 😋🙂👍🔥 That is very cool, Simon. Cheers. 🙂👍
Simon.... nice job. You always amaze me. Love to watch your DIY projects. Thanks for sharing. Ax
I've been looking forward to this video for weeks now. Nice one Simon.
Very resourceful! I saw someone post on the BushcraftUk subreddit asking about steel cans, so clearly you've inspired more than just me with this series
one mans trash eh!......fantastic to watch a true craftsman working.....not a hammer in sight🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice build, good to see Maggie getting some bacon 👍
Totally cool mate. No I can justify buying a keg. Thanks, Simon. Really excellent video work too. Must take a lot of work to get it so professional.
This thing is the absolute nuts!!!! Great taste in beer too, BTW....
Well thought out as always; Simon!!!!
For a joiner your a bloody good tinkerer Simon 😅😉 just one thing I think using stainless might have been a better choice for your pot stands and perhaps rivet the two halves together and you could put a handle on the side using the same rivets ?? Just a thought 😉👍 happy cooking !
Good idea to add a handle! The aluminium pot support should be fine - my Kelly kettle one has lasted ages in similar temperatures, no melting or distortion yet 👍🔥😁
Nicely done like making things out of old materials, a skill that is being lost today!
Oh wow that’s awesome Simon I’m definitely going to make one of those good excuse to drink some beer aswell
great video! more of this series please!
Brilliant Simon.good to see ol mags too
I have never seen or even heard of a mini keg!
Great idea, made to your usual high standards!. Thanks for sharing. 🖖👍👊😊
Hey Sapporo!! So good to see this can utilized, great avenue for resourcing and recycling into creation. I don't know how I missed this one, good on ya bloke Simon. edit, the Sapporo can makes a great alcohol stove given some engenuity.
Nyles
Nice one👍 I like the twin wall insulation. Wood gas stove next please👍👍
Yep...top job Simon, and what better way to field test it than with bacon.
Superb build. I need to drink more.
Well done bud, that is by far and away the best one out of the three that you’ve made in the series to date! Certainly looks robust, albeit dry January clearly didn’t happen in your neck of the woods! Time now to get back out there and do a proper camp… 😀
Haha - definitely not 🍻
Yes, I feel a bit of woods time coming on 👍👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods !!!!AWESOME!!!!...will make one of these for my overnighters at the beach.
THANKS!!!!

I hope you're using hearing protection while using those tools...I SAID I HOPE YOU'RE USING HEARING PROTECTION WHILE USING THOSE TOOLS!
Another great video. Thanks
Thank for great video and great workmanship gone into the rocket stove cheers Simon for awesome video 👍
Maggie approved !!!
Great Video! ❤️ New channel idea! Simon a bloke in the shed! I Love it! 🤣👍
Brilliant!
And you've never made one before...
You are a very good craftsman sir., very nice project.,
I like this idea. I've gone out and bought two cans of the beer, wow stainless cans! who knew? I;m into the first can now, not really minded whether the project goes past emptying the cans. Oh bother, I will need a third can. What a hardship!
That was great young man!! Even I could do it, you explained it so well.
Nice to see Maggie!! Give her a hug from me please.
Thank you Simon for sharing your work with us. When are you and Andy going out??
Stay safe and Take Care 👍 🌹 👍
what a brilliant idea . thanks Simon .
Brilliant Simon what a great build
Well done Simon, what an ingenious way of re-cycling your old empty Beer kegs/cans. I bet Adnan brewery would be chuffed to see this and not turning up in our towns and countryside as litter ?
I just love watching your DIY video's, makes feel absolutely Useless.
Dave B. Thailand.
Love it! A top job Simon. I well remember Sapporo beer arriving in the UK in the late '80s (it was the 'in thing' in London rock clubs at the time) and always thought there must be something useful to be done with the empties. I think that given a larger sheet of material you could have gotten the pot stand to extend downwards and transfer some weight onto the stove top for extra stability when using larger pots. I'd be tempted to pop-rivet the two halves of the Adnams keg together, to prevent any accidental spillage of the vermiculite in transit. Best build yet for sure!
great! really good home made stove, Thanks Simon,
I nearly had a flippin heart attack when you put that cup down and the tune started. Wow 😯
Best one yet mate. Super cool, I may have to drink some more beer!
Well done mate! It reminds me to dust my Kelly Kettle off for my next brew outdoors.
You nailed this for sure, watching it every part just fitted together so well, the construction was perfect, I hope to see this in use again , it's a cracker, nice one. Seriously though, I really liked it, with electricity going up this is a great of grid cooking solution, loved it.
Wonderfully done mate. I have a number of those mini kegs that have just been waiting for a cracking good project!
Great job on that one Simon pitty I don't drink
Brilliant idea. So lovely to see Maggie again
That’s cool Simon! Might give that a try!
Very retro looks really good
You have some good engineering skills there Simon 👍🏻🍺
very nice! great design. might put the feeder a bit angel down, say 30 degrees, to let the wood slide down easier as it burn. a bit bulky for the pack, gave me a very good idea for a light design i work on for some time now. cheers, and well dune!
